Did my draft with old Air Force friends. Yes I completely ignored QB's and probably should have taken Rodgers when I had the chance in the 2nd, but fuck it. I've been streaming D/ST for years now and I always end up outscoring my opponents at that position at the end of the year. If my draft is early enough in the pre-season I won't even draft a D/ST and instead look for a homerun-potential sleeper who might catch fire during the pre-season. Then after rosters are trimmed to 53 I'll figure out which of my sleeper picks on my bench is most likely a bust and drop them to pick up a D/ST. I didn't end up doing that this year, but I didn't draft my D/ST till the second-to-last round and I sure as shit would never draft or carry two D/ST.

Whether you think Matthew Berry is an idiot or not, he pretty much nails the fallacy of drafting any D/ST before one of the last two rounds in his Love/Hate column:
Every year I do this and it seems a little like shooting fish in a mock draft, or something like that, but this is based on actual draft results from actual ESPN drafts. I'm not making this up. The Seahawks' defense is getting drafted, on average, in the sixth round. Just know these two simple facts: Last year, four of the five highest-scoring fantasy defenses (Bills, Eagles, Texans and Lions) were drafted outside the top 10 on ESPN. The top drafted defense, Seattle, posted an average weekly finish of 18th among D/STs through the first seven weeks. Had you just started the team that played the Jaguars every week last year you'd have had the best fantasy defense in the game, 43 points better than the current No. 1. That's impossible, of course, but it just goes to show the benefits of streaming a defense. Do not take a defense until the very late rounds and if someone else does so at your draft, I demand you get up, right then and there, laugh at them, point at them and say, "Matthew Berry thinks you're an idiot." Because I do.

My league has a transaction fee for add/drops so it cost me a little extra money to not draft a D/ST or Kicker (since I'll have to pick them up before week 1). Some years if I think I have some good sleepers targeted I will forgo drafting a K and/or D/ST, this year there wasn't anything interesting left on my board in the last two rounds so I opted to save the fees.

But otherwise yes, you are correct, no reason not to draft and look at a couple of extra position players during the pre-season.

Defense and Kicker are always 2 of my last 3 picks. Sometimes I'll keep the last pick for a deep sleeper if there's nobody else I really want and draft the kicker before the last round to get one of the more consistent guys. I usually play in leagues where you're required to draft a kicker and defense...so not drafting one has never crossed my mind. I could see that in a 10-team league if I had the option...in a good 12 team league I'm usually scraping the bottom of the barrel for my sleepers by the end anyway.

My philosophy last year was "stream the D/ST playing Jacksonville, if available" and it worked out just fine.

My auto-pick draft actually got me two decent quarterbacks, but I wouldn't call either of them an obvious choice. Manning and Roethlisberger. I feel that Manning is the right choice, but he is a Bronco and it just feels wrong.

Obviously you can't help what auto-draft lands you, but seems like an opportunity to say another thing I don't believe in is carrying two QBs. There is always a QB available on the waiver-wire that can fill in for your QB's bye week who will score comparably well to whichever QB you leave rotting on your bench for X amount of weeks. Also in my experience QBs make poor trade-bait (your league may vary on that). In the mean time that is one less bench slot to utilize for picking up extra RBs/WRs, especially early in the season when you start getting a feel for who those break-out stars will be.

If you are in a league that starts 2 QBs or you have a large amount of teams that changes the formula a bit, but in most standard formats carrying two QBs is a waste.

My bench is almost always all RBs/WRs. I still see people all the time though with multiple QBs/TEs/D/STs/Ks. I dunno WTF they are thinking.

I have Julius Thomas on my bench because of his injury. Thomas I feel terrible keeping, because I don't even think he will be any good when he comes back. But I'm too scared to drop him in case he actually is ok in JAX. I'm not thrilled with my replacement - Owen Daniels.

I also have Tannehill on my bench, because I drafted Brady and didn't realize the judge also drafted him. Now, I want to wait a week or two to see if I can trade Tannehill for value.

But should I just drop Thomas since he will probably suck when he gets back anyway? (this is why people have 2 qb's/te's - indecisive assholes)

I'd try trading Julius Thomas...I think he's going to suck too, which is why I didn't keep him for $1 in the auction league, but someone might be suckered into thinking he wasn't just a product of Peyton Manning. If there's a middle rounder you wanted from some guy that's weak at TE, there's no reason not to take a shot at a trade.
