I don't know why they have to go super over the top with the combat, it looks retarded to me. Doesn't have to be as simple as Dragon Quest XI but doing 10 backflips on a single animation cheapens the experience.

Looks good, but I have to say, the battles remind me a lot of FF15. That is, all flash, no substance. Hope I'm wrong. Would love to see the battle system of one of the old games return (1-9, or 10, or 12, or even 13) rather than another action-oriented chaotic schmozz.

At least the characters are mostly actual grown adults for once.

Would love to see a modern game with 10's combat system. Or even the traditional ATB from all prior games.

I hope that the traditional summons are all fairly early on and defeating them unlocks the various elemental skills, this is how the games with relevent summons handled them.

Having Ifrit as a final boss again is going to be really underwhelming, he's the fucking first boss of FF8 and very early in FF5 for fucks sake... so I hope it's more like how they treated Shiva in FF14 where you defeat her first then she's a recurring character after.

Someone brought up the Endwalker trailer, most of it was from the first 3 levels and it was kind of incredible to fight the final boss they spent 8 years building up to at lv83 - yet still raise the stakes and properly establish the two surprise bosses after.

So I trust them again after refusing to play 13-2, 13-3 and 15... I hope I'm not let down again as the last good mainline single player game was FF10.

The fact you didn't list 12 makes me question your post X statements. It was clearly the best mechanically out of everything post X.

8 was my intro to the series so it'll always hold the rose colored goggles. However I think 9 might be my most fondly remembered. And 10 holds my namesake I've kept all these years.

8 was decent, but uneven. The combat system was somewhat interesting, Triple Triad was fun. The plot was kinda meh, though, and the characters were sort of flat.

9 was ok, but for some reason I never really loved it. The Vivi stuff was good, but I didn't really care for the characters all that much.

I liked 10, especially Blitzball (here is to hoping they add Blitzball to 14 lol). The characters were also more interesting than the prior 2 titles.

12 was okay, but not great.

13 was shit. 15 I never even played because 13 soured the single player series for me.

Speaking of 8, I loved the rearrangement of the Ultimecia theme they did in the FF14 savage raid

13-2 was great. Sort of a modern Chrono Trigger with time-hopping.

Lightning Returns was alright, I liked how similar it was to Majora's Mask and it was fun to play.

15 was...full of problems, so missing that is fine. The brotherhood of the main characters is enjoyable, but not much else.

As for 8, I like 8. It's a nostalgia-fest for me because it came out like the first week of High School and I identified with the characters in the game starting at Balamb and everything.

People really overlook 13-2. It was my favorite FF game besides 12. The monster recruiting was a great change.

13 was so bad it made me never look at the sequels. The characters were so fucking annoying. Then I see videos of the characters in the sequels doing kpop concerts in the game and I went from zero interest to negative interest.

You must be thinking of 10-2. That had the concert shit in it. That game had the best battle system though.

Perhaps. I never looked at any of the sequels. I also didn’t like FF10.

FF10-2 is fantastic. I love the class system. I think I might enjoy that game more than 10-1, much like the situation with 13-2. I think 10-2 was also the last FF to use traditional ATB like 4-9.

The concert is fucking stupid but it's also like, one scene in the game that's right at the beginning. I'm sure someone at Square thought "the kids will love it" with that one.

The first half is great, yes.

In the second half it devolves into everyone having every license and being identical, with a shit story.

Also the best mechanically post 10 is being the best of a very bad bunch, yes it's better than 13 and I assume 15... so what?

Here's my personal FF tier list that I put together a while back. Might need to click it to blow it up and actually read some of them.

I need to play FF Dimensions (the first one) and Crystal Chronicles at some point, probably the biggest ones I've missed besides the online ones.

And yes, I rate FFT as #1 and World of Final Fantasy is probably way too high but I love it.

Since we are doing this again, remember that there are two axes for FF games: story/setting and gameplay/mechanics.

All the disagreement is where a game is strong in one and weak in the other.

FF6, 7 and 10 are fairly strong in both which is why most people like them. FF9 has a bad battle system and FF12 has a bad story so people either love them or hate them.

FF8 actually has a good story and battle system but it does jump the shark a little storywise at the orphanage and you can ruin it by grinding draws which you are not supposed to do and isn't even the most efficient (refining is). So idiots hate it.

"By the end everyone is identical" could be argued about most FF games. Even 10 let characters break into the skill grids of other characters later on and learn everything.

The only exceptions are the games with character-specific abilities with no crossover. FF4/6/9 and whatever else, I guess FF1 could count.

My ideal FF game would have a class system AND character-specific abilities so that even at the end when your characters have learned everything, they still have character-specific abilities. I don't think they've combined the two yet.

Yes, although it tends to be in post game super boss territory and not towards the end of the base game.

But the story is also shit, so there's nothing to keep you interested until the sudden unfinished ending. The Zodiac Age version is much better.

Anyway, in order from left to right and MMOs being somewhat their own thing:

I haven't played 2 or 15 so going off what I have heard about the games. Only played the 3D version of 3 and half of 4.
