I hated Locke as a character for example so he was never in my main party and was usually underleveled.

I used to always leave Gau behind at Kefka's Tower and generally avoided using him throughout the rest of the game as well. Many years later during the dead of a particularly cold winter I was doing a big play through of all the SNES RPGs really trying to push each of them. A guide on GameFaqs for Gau showed me the light. That character is totally crazy.

Good old Cat Scratch.
Just ended up using him to spam Cura, Terra was doing ~10k damage a turn with dual Flare AND I forgot to turn Morph, Sabin was doing 9999 with Blitz... the boss only has 60k health so the battle lasted about 3 turns lol.

I minmaxed the fuck out of +2 Magic bonuses.
Even just a little grinding should quickly get Locke past 20k per turn (the sky is the limit) and you get a +2 Str esper at like mid-to 2/3rds through the WoB. But I guess considering how incredibly weak Kefka is for a FF end boss there really isn't much need.

I really don't agree.

The world is fucked, down to having a different colour palette and layout. Vector, Doma and the Esper town are destroyed, Narshe is abandoned, Moblitz has only children left. Other towns have destroyed or empty buildings. Maybe we could have seen Kefka destroy one other town after we just left it but I feel like destroying too much makes it too depressing or setting up you undoing it (like in FF5).

The side stories are depressing and set up what Kefka is doing well enough. You are ants surrying around beneath the notice of God. It would lessen his power and threat if he interacted with you and you keep escaping (another FF5 mistake). It's all about picking yourself back up and finding hope with your first few comrades (Sabin and Edgar never gave up), then bringing hope to the rest.

These games have to balance being a story on rails and also player choice. Choosing the order to find party members and hunt for treasure give you a lot of agency and creates a lot of "game" to play, it's great. Too many games today put you on rails and play themselves for you, even allegedly open world games with their satnavs.

The game has two flaws which are:

1) Esper level up bonuses dissuade you from learning more spells. I got all Espers but only learned Flare on Terra, I didn't learn any other high level spells and was still using Firaga on Celes.

2) Asking you to use 12 party members in the final dungeon but not facilitating you using multiple parties enough before this point. FF10 solved that brilliantly.

The Phoenix Cave dungeon is supposed to be your intro to using multiple parties. Obviously not completely optimal, but having it be 12 in the final dungeon does give it a more epic feel. Of course if you've put in any real work, they can all be overpowered as heck and none of the dungeon/bosses are a challenge in the slightest.

While a lot of the towns are "destroyed" or broken down, most everything is still all there for you to get even more powerful items from that makes the transition from ants running way from god to 12 characters that will go climb a tower of trash and wreck that "god" like he was nothing pretty quick.

The character backstory and few lore bits they have hidden in different convos with certain npcs are the best part, as they do kind of advance the "legendary monsters and items lost to the world but found again" mystery that the WoR presents in certain spots. Just over the years, there's always been so much talk about how Kefka is such a great villain because he actually succeeds in destroying the world, and "wins". He doesn't, though, just completely transforms it, then sits around until you can power up and take him out with barely breaking a sweat. Some of that is the game/combat being extremely broken and easy to break further, but for me at least on successive play-throughs, I've always wanted more interaction there to truly drive him as a villain. Instead of just being this "god" in the background who sends out beam of destruction a couple of times for story purposes.

If they did a "Remake" treatment to 6 and were going to add anything? I would want more Kefka direct interaction in the WoR.

Gogo and Umaro are the auto-excludes, Umaro is just terrible and Gogo can't equip espers.

lol @ leaving out Locke when he could probably just solo one path of the tower.

Locke can solo one path of the tower? How?

If Locke can solo one path, then most characters can solo one path. Which is true with proper min/maxing. I once had Cyan solo one path with level 99 and octa-slash relics.

I never found Locke to be a standout among the cast power-wise, outside of keeping him lower-level and giving him ValiantKnife/Offering. Which was more of a fun novelty build than anything else.

Umaro, Gogo, and Setzer are probably the most leave-behindable characters for Kefka's Tower. And out of those, Umaro with the Snow Muffler or whatever it is can wreck in Group 1. I like Gogo's look a lot, but yeah. Poor Setzer is just blah. I think Relm might also be a bit on the low end of the spectrum, but I think I turned her into a very good spellcaster last time.

Pretty much any character in FF6 can be great or OP if you put the effort into them.

Final Stats:

FF1 - 12:01 Play Time
Lv47 White Mage/Warrior/Thief/Black Mage

Now maybe run FF1 with 2x Red Mage and 2x Monk to experience the rest of the classes. That'd actually be a really solid party, since RM is possibly the best in the first half and falls off a bit endgame, while Monk is weak in the first half and probably the best endgame. The RMs could use AOEs in the early-game to carry things, and RM expensive-ness would be offset by the two Monks needing basically nothing.

Man, I've run FF1 so many different times now that it's easily my most-played FF. And it was never my favorite, plus I didn't even own it until like 1999. It just ended up being the one I revisit the most.

Oh yeah, my 4x White Mage run has been on hold for a couple weeks, but I reached the final dungeon. Level 32 on everyone which might be too low, but we'll see whenever I muster up some energy to finish the job. That's pretty much the last FF1 party I wanted to try.

I've beaten FF1 with:

-4x Fighter
-4x Red Mage (twice, one on NES and one on PS1)
-4x Thief (the hardest, on NES)
-4x Monk
-4x Black Mage (twice, one on NES and one on Pixel Remaster)
-3x Fighter and 1x White Mage (go-to as a kid after realizing how OP Fighter was)
-2x Fighter and 2x Red Mage
-2x Monk and 2x Red Mage
-2x Thief and 2x Black Mage
-Fighter, Thief, Monk, White Mage
-Fighter, Monk, Red Mage, White Mage (probably my favorite party)
-Fighter, Red Mage, 2x Monk

So that's 14 playthroughs and I'm probably forgetting a couple. Only other FF to come close is FF6 which I've played roughly 5-7 times.

looks like Pixel Remastered 1-6 is coming to the Switch and this thread has too much memberberries for me to pass that up.

Truly it is possible to stand a shadow's breadth away from the truth and yet never reach it.

Being low level doesn't make Valiant Knife deal more damage, in fact you were completely crippling yourself. The damage bonus on Valiant is based on how many hp you are missing from your max, not on having a low hp total. But the fact that it ignores defense and ignores the damage penalty from offering means it hits incredibly hard even when you're at full hp, since the missing hp damage bonus is on top of the normal physical damage scaling.

Ultima weapon has fairly absurd damage formula

1671417546282.png

But the short of it is that it scales off your level and double your strength, as well as ignoring defense. Contrary to popular belief it doesn't gain damage from having high hp, it only loses damage if you aren't at max hp. But with all the scaling it becomes quite easy for it to hit hard enough to make the offering damage penalty irrelevant.

So a properly leveled up AtmaValiant Locke is far and away the strongest physical attacker in the game, and while it doesn't matter in the Kefka fight it certainly matters in the Dragon's Den...which was left out of the Pixel Remaster.

Yeah I remember just putting Atma on super leveled person with Gengi Glove and Offering and you're basically dealing out 4x9999 plus 4x whatever your second best weapon hits for. Once you're even doing decent damage with it, you can take a solo person with it to dino forest for power leveling.

I remember a friend of mine had full parties of imp characters in full imp armor and weapons. I haven’t ever looked up what’s needed to do that but I imagine it’s a lot of grinding. He used to force his little brother to grind his characters and would limit him to specific areas. The kid was just excited to be able to play it so would happily grind for hours for him lol

Can't seem to get any FF7 apks or roms working :/

I have it on Steam but want the convenience of my phone...

Edit: Steam has access to AI upscale mod so I will use that, but I really want to go back to pirating for the FF8 remaster for the new models.

Don't want to pay for these games a 3rd time.

I have a similar issue with Dragon Quest 7. Really want to play it on my phone (like I did with the first six in the last few years) and there isn't really any good way to do that. I'd take a Switch port too. Only options are PS1 and 3DS. PS1 I can do, but it'd be on a TV. 3DS, not getting the system for one game. The 3DS version is also far superior to the PS1 version, so my best bet is to play it on Citra emulator for phones. Seems to work okay, but sound can be pretty choppy. Been holding off on it hoping for a Switch or phone version to drop outta nowhere but no dice yet that I know of.

In your case, I don't know if there's any good way to get FF7 on a phone. Personally if I revisit FF7 I'll play the HD remaster on PS4. That looks really nice and only runs like $10 these days. I think it's the same as the Steam version only without mods, so you're good there. Too bad it can't be put on a phone.

I wish Square would just put all their FF's and DQ's on Switch and phone for like $10 a pop and be done with it, this piecemeal approach is annoying (having certain FFs and DQs be totally unavailable on modern hardware).

FF7 is on the app store, it's just $15 and not remastered. FF8 is remastered and FF9 was fine anyway.

FF10 is the first one not on mobile but is on everything else.

They were dropped/stolen items from certain enemies in the World of Ruin, which you could also then do a chain at the Coliseum betting an item for another. Basically were worthless unless character had Imp status, then they had amazing defense/attack power (up there with best items in the game, think just below a couple of the top items). Actually taught the "Imp" spell, too, I believe. Had certain elemental absorb/status stuff I can't recall atm.

Yeah, I love stuff like that. Secret of Mana and Earthbound also had a few rare drop weird items that were potentially best-in-slot and whatnot. Earthbound's were particularly cool, but so rare that you'd way overlevel if you went for everyone's best weapons. And Secret of Mana had like 18 rare drops towards the end if you went for everyone's BIS armor and the last tier of every weapon. Though that one was harder to overlevel in at least.

To bring it back to FF, I never got the Pink Tail or Adamant Armor in FF4. Spent probably around 15 hours farming that one room for Pink Puffs. Got a bunch of them, none ever dropped the item. Ended up with the whole party going from level 45ish to level 99 in that one room. Rarest drop in the FF series, maybe.

I'm the same with FF4, I had a super old save file I had put countless hours into farming the last dungeon including the Pink Puffs and never got any rare drops outside of a Zeus gauntlet I believe? Swear it felt like rng was just always messed up.

Yeah I think FF4's rare drop RNG is just astronomically low.

I read somewhere that you have a 1/4096 chance of getting the Pink Tail every time you get into a fight in that one room. 1/64 chance of encountering the Pink Puffs and 1/64 chance of them dropping the item. That's pretty absurd. Other items are a bit better, maybe like 1/5 chance of encounter and 1/64 chance of drop.

Factor in that it only takes like 3-4 hours to reach level 99 grinding in the final dungeon, and the rare drops don't really make any sense. You'll be wildly OP from levels way before you get the Adamant Armor or too many of the other drops.

Gotta say, the rollout for the Pixel Remaster console collection was fucking idiotic and took a lot of the wind out of my sails. This was probably my most-wanted game outside of Fromsoft, too. I missed the window to buy it just like everyone else did, and apparently it ran around ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS for the standard version because of the massively inflated shipping price they tacked on.

Whole thing is so incredibly botched that it makes me throw my hands up. I guess I'll get them individually via digital download or something, like I could have done already. If the PS4 versions have their own platinums and good trophy sets I'll go with that, if not I'll just do Switch versions. There's some appeal to having the entire FF series on my PS5 though (outside of FF11 and 13) so that's the way I'm leaning.

I missed the boat too unless there's going to be more physical copies made. Although I don't think I would pay 100 bucks just for FF4 and 6. I could care less about the others, though I would probably play through them again.
