So tomorrow, when people who haven't played early access yet try to go and create a character and all the servers are locked, what then? They've already said their servers have WAY too many players on them, so they're not going to just open them up.

I'm a bit worried that it's not their hardware that's a problem, but something in their code sucks.
Hopefully if it is hardware related, they took action on Saturday so they can hopefully get it in place soon. But I doubt it. I'd imagine Thursday or Friday at the earliest. But we might be all bitching a lot over labor day weekend.
And hodj, I don't mean locked as in can't log on. I mean locked as they're not allowing new character creation. Yesterday morning I believe there were 3 servers left. By the evening, no new character creations on any NA/EU servers. So a new player tomorrow will be forced to roll on a JP server.

I won't thankfully, i'll be in seattle at PAX, i'll tell them their "launch" sucked ass there though, pretty sure they're having a "launch event" there lol
Hopefully I can come back next week and actually be able to log in whenever I want hehe
They should take the guild wars 2 approach once all this stuff finally gets sorted out, offer free transfers for the first couple weeks or whatever since a lot of people are now scattered around unable to play where they want, and with who they want.

you fucking suck dude. seriously i would rather have pages of every single person posting they are getting 90k and errors than read whatever you are trying to contribute to this "discussion." i'm sure everyone feels the same.
if people are paying for your product then its on the market aka it's released and subject to whatever feedback, criticisms, successes and failures as every other product. now go sit in the corner

If the code sucked then they would have issues in Japan as well. Japan hasn't had near the downtime we had in NA/EU. Also they don't have near the people playing so it brings me to conclude its purely hardware related.
If I was the Infrastructure Manager for SE right now, I'd be calling up Amazon, Google, Rackspace any cloud provider I could find. Rent a whole environment space with expandable resources. Convert any physical servers to VMs, then migrate them to the cloud infrastructure. They could create 20 more servers in a few days. Then when the load dies down due to users play times diminishing or people cancelling their accounts you migrate the VMs back to your datacenter, and shut down the cloud services.
I know this can be done, because I do it for a living =P

Saw a post about this on Reddit, but what role did you all go with for your chocobo (or what are you planning on)?
I went with DPS. I haven't used it very much yet, mostly because I'm not grinding mobs very often and it sucks summoning it and then having to withdraw to ride it again (fucking greens are going to be my biggest money sink I think). The only time I've HAD to use it was killing Ice Sprites in Coerthas. Those fuckers are HARD. I had to run from them at least three times because they almost nuked me to death. Even with the chocobo I had to run once.
I'm wondering how long it takes to level them up. Mine is still only level 1 (or rank 1?), but that's probably mostly due to not using it.

I took a year of Japanese in college, does that count? haha
What SE probably didn't count on was this is the best MMORPG offering at this time, and probably will be until EQNEXT comes out. So potentially they could have the millions of WoW refugees.
When I got to play yesterday I had a lot of fun, more fun than the other MMORPGs I've tried recently

Also, Im hearing that pretty much every EU/NA server is on lockdown for new characters, is this true?
I'm looking forward to see what the idiot white knight brigade will all be saying tomorrow when the "early access , you havent paid for anything" excuse cant be used.
I'm sure you are right , it will be "it's the first day of retail , you have to expect all the servers to be fucked up" will be the mantra.
Then next week will be "it's only one week after launch, " etc.
Do they really think SE is going to fix this core problem they have between today and tomorrow when MORE people are going to be logging in ?
