Is 2.4 Ninjas? Tried to play again when they did the free month earlier this year, but flopping around like a fish on dry land from back to side to back to side to back to side for alternating positional requirements on melee attacks was obnoxious. Ninja sounded more combination-focused, rather than constant positional shifting.

Ninjas might be back only, though we don't really know yet. Monks have a lot of positional requirements for maximum dmg output but at the same time not being in the position doesn't affect your rotation so it's not that bad, Dragoon is fucking horrible because you HAVE to be on the side for the buff one(heavy strike I think?) to get the chain going or in the back for the other chain. Also because jump is still fucking garbage. I picked up my monk again and I kinda like it, positional changes aren't so bad, it's mostly 3sides and 3backs chained together, so you just switch every 3 skills. When you need to dodge shit you can just ignore it and still pull respectable damage, the only thing that really matters is not dropping GL3.

Well, after levelling every class to 15~20, and 3 jobs into the mid/high 30s, hoping to find just one play-style engaging enough to keep me motivated into the endgame, I logged in one day last week and just couldn't go on.

I've finally admitted to myself that I just don't like the combat, at all. Enough has been said about it already so no need to repeat. What a bummer, really wanted to find another MMO home to live in for at least a good little while. =(

I can't speak for all the jobs, but I have a level 50 BLM and the combat changed and became more interesting as I got to higher level. Firestarter and Thundercloud procs, plus Fire III, Blizzard III, and Flare all make things a lot more fun. Before those skills it was just Fire till oom, transpose, blizzard till transpose is back up, transpose, fire, rinse and repeat.

I am on my third month of the subscription and really enjoying it. Working on my Relic Reborn quest, up to the hard mode primals now.

Absolutely, lower level combat is really very limited compared to what you get max level. I was doing a low level dungeon for my atma book on my paladin and hated it. Basically i was hitting two buttons the entire time =/.

Oh, and if ever there was a spell specifically designed to MAKE you rage-quit a class in a MMO, it's RUIN. Damn that slow, weak as dishwater, soul-sucking abomination of a spell to the Seven Hells!

Well Ruin does shit damage because of all the dots and the pet doing damage. If it did good damage SMN damage would be retarded. It kinda sucks to see puny numbers I guess though, but SMN damage is very good especially for a ranged class with access to combat rez. Arguably the 2nd strongest DPS class, first being monks(though on some fights BLM is better than both).

But yeah the combat is weird, it's not super intensive and the long GCD also annoys some people. I find it rather nice, gives you more time to think what to do next(well on classes that have to do that, which is not all of them) and the rotations being simple lets you focus more on the fights without requiring an addon telling you what's the next optimal key to press(wow).

Also too many classes don't get fun until 40 or higher. Black Mage is boring as shit until 40(and 42 makes it even better), Dragoon is awful as fuck until 40 and 50 adds a lot more stuff to do, Monk gets much better at 40 with 3stacks GL and 50 gives you a new move that makes it much easier to do positional requirements with a better flow, Bard gets a ton more fun at 48 when you unlock Blood Thirst or whatever so your dots proc resets on the off the GCD shot. That's for DPS though it's similar for WAR and SCH too.

As a tank, i don't like the long GCD lol but it's not awful i guess.
Currently got the marauder at lvl 20 zzz fates are pretty much dead now so leveling is slowing down a bit

Solo FATEs go quite a bit faster when you have a combat chocobo with a few points in attack, though it takes a while to level it up and generally it's more something that will happen on alts and shit. If you're not clearing FATEs quickly, you can dump your 100 leves into stuff, it's pretty much the same xp/hour(potentially more but you need to know where to go and what to do, which I don't, it has to do with doing higher level escort leves and not killing anything though). Dungeons are also good and as a tank queues should be fast, if you do 2 dungeon runs per "tier" you'll easily get like 1.5level from that, you get like 3/4 of a level every 10level from hunting log, daily roulette is a level or so, guildhests are like half a level every 5levels so overall it goes pretty fast.

There are only 2 or 3 semi-active people left in the guild. I only log on for the luls every now and then, no time to play any more. If people want to reform it I can transfer ownership, or make a bunch of people officers, or whatever.

Leveling is definatly a weak point in this game. End game is worth it though.
I actually enjoyed the leveling in here much much more than games like Wildstar and WoW. I thought it was right up there with SWToR. After about level 15 when you get to Seventh Dawn stuff, and start doing primal fights and whatnot the story is probably one of the best parts of the game IMO. Definitely has that Final Fantasy storyline sewn through it. I was sad to see it all end at 50 but I must say they add a good chunk of story/quests to every patch so that's nice.

So you can get a second retainer. Does it still cost two bucks a month? Seems cheaper to just make an alt and level it to 20 and mog mail shit back and forth.

This would be my major criticism of the game - each class play changes so radically from mid to end game. I can only think of one or two classes that are even remotely fun before at least level 35 (eg White Mage getting Regen). And the first class you pick to go through the story with when is critical to how much you enjoy the game. You also MUST understand how much power you are giving up by not having cross class abilities depending on the class.

Arcanist is the best first class for fun and to learn the game from. It levels a healing role (Scholar) and a DPS role (Summoner) concurrently, so you get fast queues healing for dungeons queues and it's the best soloer being a straight tank pet/DoT class.

If I were starting over I'd level my first job to 50 through dungeons (probably Scholar - so easy in group content to play this class and queues pop fast for healers) and ignore any side quests, only doing your job stuff and what you need to get your airship pass and lvl 50.
