I have never adjusted to the smaller 1/4" needles. Of injectables I take 4-6 shots of Humalog and 1x shot of Lantis and its 50 bucks for each for 3 months worth. The more expensive thing is the Dexcom G6 CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) sensors, those things are more like 100 bucks a month, $300+ every 3 months. So much better than 6-8 finger sticks a day, though
Edit: I will reuse the Lantus pen needle for the whole life of the pen (6 injections at least). The Humalog pen needles I last until they start it stops being painful and starts being injurious. A new one every day, though, for the one I carry with me to the office.
