Is there any modern day spiritual successors to Cross Edge? I've been struggling really bad finding a game to grab my interst while I wait for Ashes alpha 2; tried to go back in memory when I used to console game more and one of my fondest memories was Cross Edge. Story was so bizarre and hacked together it actually had its appeal and the combat had just the right level of complexity. Best thing was all the boss fights and the ability to overkill and get special rewards. It also had a pretty epic post game where you really got to push your gear + comp optimization + strategy to try and beat abunch of baddies. Plenty of grinding which I am fine with as long as you feel progression.
Was going to go play Tactics Ogre but when i started it when it first came out the whole bullshit of essentially having monsters stay in level partity with you just ruined it. I'm getting way to finicky after 37 years of gaming sadly...just certain mind blocks ruin games for me when it shouldn't. I think back to the original Final Fantasy and when you went over into the 1st area that had ogres....like you could hardly handle 2-3 battles before having to go rest at the inn. Then you cashed out on some good exp/cash, bought some (silver?) weapons and started handling that shit and progressing to area with groups of ogres and even a green ogre OMG! Artificially increase mob levels with yours in games always ruins it for me

They don’t stay 1:1 the entire game, it bothered me at first too but it’s done well and you stop noticing it, it’s just a number. I haven’t played cross edge but reading what you liked about it you may like the Disgaea series. Bizarre story, all kinds of crazy mechanics, like doing dungeons that exist inside every item to level the item itself up and make it stronger. The further you can progress into the item’s dungeon the stronger it gets. Can progress in the end game forever.

Oh i love me tactics ogre, one of my top 5 games probably of all time when it originally came out. I'll give the new version another go thanks.
Good call on Disgaea, its the only console game series i've consistently played across the last 20+ years. Every one outside Disgaea 6 was excellent to scratch the itch. Cross Edge actually pulls in a variety of NIS America characters including Disgaea into it.
Just bought Labyrinth of Galleria (sequal to Lab of Refrain); think it has a pretty extensive level of strategy layers. 1st one was abit more mature story and fairly fun game so will try this and if bombs Ogre Tactics it is.
