hah yeah, the poorest educated and most violent member of the team is black. kinda sends all that feminist good feels right down the crapper where this movie belongs. the funny would have been if the black woman was the most reasonable and intelligent. nope too unbelievable. loud, black, dumb and violent is obviously the key to comedy gold. fuckin ernie hudson must be thanking his lucky stars he wasnt degraded by being casted for this, they probably would have had him dressed as a pimp and eating fried chicken.

I like how fucking everyone glosses over the fact that while not a huge amount of Hudson's original character concept came through, he was still regarded as being super smart and capable. It's even mentioned in the video game about him studying for his doctorate; that's still the "canon" version of that character. Now we have the new chick, who is basically from the beginning, the token black person. Rewrite not even needed!

So fucking lame. Someone ask Hudson how that worked out for him. (Well, actually, pretty well, but he still says he hated the change.)

Hudson: as long as there's a steady paycheck involved i'll believe in anything you want.

I haven't seen the original in many years now, but I remember those lines well. They were funny, he was a good character, but they kinda do seem like token black lines themselves too. So IDK, the chick seems right in line with this whole thing just miming the original in every regard. Just another lame Hollywood retread with a new modern twist.

That's one of the only "token" lines he has though. Even without all the extra stuff behind him, he still comes across as extremely reasonable and down to earth. That's not at all how the Jones is playing her character.

I mean, yea, they're obviously both the token character, but I still think Hudson's had more class, instead of the whole stereotypical thing the new one has.

And like, I wouldn't even so much MIND that, if they weren't going fucking apeshit over the GIRL POWER thing, and how they're gonna change minds and shit. Like, you don't get to call people misogynists if you're sitting there with the same ol token black character.

I would agree with this.

At no time during the original did I really think of Winston as "token" character..but more the working day everyman that has to deal with three science nerd goofs.

This new version just seems like such lazy writing, other than using the logo, ecto1, name...what's the point?

It's a reboot. The point is to make $$ by feeding on nostalgia, but the hope is that by adding modern elements the reboot becomes better than the original. Given the reaction on YouTube and this thread though, nostalgia reasons aren't going to win.

Good reboot example: Star Wars The Force Awakens. Bad reboot example Transformers.

When I was a kid I always liked Wilson and never saw him as a token anything. Hearing the token black stuff with him and how the character changed just makes me sad.

And he filled an important role due to how it allowed the others to play off of him. He was the straight-man that was able to point out all the insane shit that was going on around him. I'm guessing Leslie Jones' character is still intended to fit that role since she's the non-scientist, but instead of being the down-to-earth straight-man Winston was, she's going to be an over-the-top caricature.
