I guess if you judge his actions in a certain way you could say he's a villain. He did that to Lysa to further his position in the Vale and protect Sansa. Joffrey and Ramsay do sadistic shit just because it's fun for them, there doesn't seem to be an end goal. Littlefinger has ambitions!

Well at least we know what Varys' intentions actually are. The last book made it quite clear that Varys and his cohorts (Illyrio, Prince Doran, Jon Griff, Young Griff, etc) intend to see the Targaryen Dynasty reinstated for some reason. Doran wants House Lannister to burn to the ground and Dorne is one of the two remaining untouched Kingdoms in the Realm. The other being The Vale that is coming under the control of Littlefinger.

I am not sure what Littlefinger intends to do though, even if he does cement his control of the Vale he wants to marry Sansa off to the heir of the Veil after he gets rid of Robert Aryn. Then have her come out as the survivor of the Stark family to reclaim the North for House Stark. But it goes without saying that everyone in the Seven Kingdoms other than Jon Snow and Stannis is avoiding the elephant in the room up North. Littlefinger is also unaware of The Golden Company making landfall in the Stormlands and I have no idea what Dany will do with him when she and her eastern horde arrive.

I finally finished book 3, the audio book with Roy Dotrice reading it. So good, thanks to those that recommended it. I would say if you don't feel like reading but want to get the story, definitely check out this audio book. Only slightly disturbing how into the sex scenes he gets. But not gonna get into book discussion, just throwing out my recommendation for those that don't feel like waiting a year.

Has anyone watched a porn with Shae in it? I guess I can see why she doesn't do that anymore. Kind of an upgrade though.

Been a few days but finally got to see this.

The annoying thing about episodes like this is the plot holes it creates (or seems to). For example:

With them not showing the black gate, what stops the wildings from just waltzing through? That light at the end of the tunnel looked pretty big
Jon/Ygritte scene - Where are the other wildings? Where is Tormund? How was she able to follow jon, did she have a horse?
Jaime/Cersei - This is the biggest one in my opinion and one which I'm curious how they will fix. Jaime wasn't supposed to show up until after Joffery is dead. Now he and Brienne are in KL while Sansa is still there. Will he now be at Joffery's wedding? How will he fulfill his oath to return Sansa when she's already there anywhere?

Weak episode overall. To be honest average season overall. I still put it below season 1. I think it's very obvious now that going forward the tv show is going to start departing the source material on a more frequent basis, perhaps in bigger ways than it has so far.

I normally don't have a hard time following the stories in this show, but I am a little confused about something. I re-watched the last episode and then the "Inside the Episode" after that.

I am confused with the whole Theon/Ramsey storyline. Lord Bolton tells Frey that he is holding Theon for amnesty (or something like that). What exactly does holding Theon do for Bolton? I know Ramsey sent that letter to Lord Greyjoy threatening to kill Theon if they don't leave the north. I just don't get the purpose of keeping Theon alive.

Every time Charles Dance is on camera I expect him to have a false wooden eye a la his character in last action hero. Seriously though dude is a boss and not being nominated there is a travesty. As a book reader I feel like he has embodied his character from the book better than any other actor on the show in any of the 3 seasons.
I thought Bean really nailed Ned as well. But I agree Dance does a fantastic job as Tywin.

Theon is the rightful heir to the Iron Islands, keeping him alive seems like it could be used as some sort of a bargaining chip later on (or now, as you suggest). Even if he is a failure in his father's eyes, others will see him as the rightful heir.

When Theon was "adopted" by the Stark, the Greyjoy people stayed on their islands. As soon as Theon stepped on the Iron Islands, the Greyjoy people reverted back to pillaging the coasts of the North. So holding Theon alive seems like a good bargaining chip (Ramsey being better at torturing than diplomacy, he severely compromised the value of the chip though).

Would you say cutting off his manhood is severely compromising or absolutely unequivocally ruining the bargaining chip?

I'm not sure if people outside the Greyjoy household really know how much the father despises Theon.

Ah I see. I guess what was confusing me was when Bolton said something like, "Robb Stark was offering amnesty for whoever brought Theon to him." I might have misheard it, but wasn't Bolton on the Stark's side anyway? Why would he need amnesty?

I'm sorry if I'm being an idiot, I just don't get it.

If Jon is really dead, show watchers are never going to believe he actually dies when he gets stabbed since he survived the three arrows from Ygritte. I wonder if that is intentional foreshadowing on Martin's part.

also I didn't think of the Jamie/Brienne/Sansa plot hole until now... that's a good point.

Meaning, the iron born that where with theon where offered amnesty if they handed theon over- and they did...and I am fairly sure they got flayed still.

Looking at what the north has become so quickly even after just the starks leaving winterfell shows how much of a fucking messed up place it was and will be- the Starks where holding it all together. The Lannisters will give 2 shits about the white walker warning from the nights watch- and the north is in such disarray that basically half of westeros can be walked over by the walker army without a thought.

Why is Bran so much I must get north of the wall... didn't he want to go north of the wall because "your brother is there, surrounded by enemies" and didn't Sam tell them he would be at castle black most likely? even if sam didn't know jon was alive etc.. they should have at least checked in there- they could always leave and then go through the "secret" tunnel that's for some reason unguarded that goes through the wall vs our cool big tunnel with doors and shit.

I think Sansa looking like a 20 year old is messing up the character some even if they mentioned that she is suppose to be 15 or whatever...still...makes her just seem dumb.

I like the hound and arya - should be quite interesting- I loved how he just sat down and started eating those dudes food.

Ok yea, I remember that part of the conversation. Bolton said they were going to be freed, but then he mentioned his son (Ramsey) had a different way of handling it. And then in the letter Ramsey sent to Lord Greyjoy, he mentions flaying them.

I guess Bolton is using Theon as a way of avoiding a conflict with the Greyjoys now that he is warden of the north?

Predictions for Brienne arc:

She chills out in KL as Jaime's guest. Cersei is an asshole to her. She learns no one knows where the hell Arya is. Tywin will probably be "lol, you ain't bringing Sansa anywhere and Cat is dead". Brienne conflicted! Maybe she hangs around as a bodyguard for Sansa. Then all the shit goes down and Jaime eventually sends her on her quest when Sansa goes missing.

Are they just using Littlefinger outright to progress the Joffrey/Sansa plot? Instead of having Ser Dontos in there even though he has been introduced since last season. Just not used at all.
