It's probably a scene that wasn't in the books aimed at getting non-book readers up to speed on who The Mountain is and what he's capable of. In the show he hasn't really done anything since chopping the horse's head off in season 1. Most show watchers will probably have forgotten who he is, let alone his crazy reputation. That casting changes would have made it even more confusing for your average viewer.

A 3 - 5 minute scene of him going apeshit in all his 10-foot-tall-rippling-muscle glory combined with a mention of what he did during the sack of King's landing will bring him back to relevance for show watchers.

Yeah they will need him for the flashback scenes of when the viper tells tyrion about ellie. He might be shirtless because he got all rapey while he was killing.

Shows he's more than "just a raging sword swinger"
I dunno. Not wanting the sun in your eyes doesn't make you an intelligent fighter, it makes you a human. The Mountain wore the heaviest and strongest armor in the world so he could deflect most blows and generally just cleaves through his opponents. He's an amazing fighter not due to skill but due to strength and size, at least that's what I took away from reading. Oberyn could have killed him easily even without poison, but he decided he wanted to get within grabbing range of Gregor and, well, he dun goofed.

And Sansa would easily beat Khal Drogo in kickboxing match, because I too can just say shit like it's fact.

We don't know whatwouldorcouldhappen, we know what did happen. He poisoned him.

Next season needs to start, this is a dumb argument dragging on way too long=P And it is definitely leading up to the dreaded "Top 10 fighters in Westeros!?". It's cyclical like the NFL thread arguments about quarterbacks.

The Cleganes are a royal house. I think it's pretty silly to assume the Mountain didn't receive pretty serious sword training growing up.

Of course he received training. But I think the bulk of his training likely happened in battles. Based on my pure assumptions. The bottom line is that he isn't known for his grace and poise in swordfighting, he is known for HULK SMASHing everyone and everything.

In that text excerpt posted above, he's described as "dim", but having instincts. I always took this to mean that while he's not a retard, he isn't exactly a brilliant strategist, either. He just happens to be one of those guys who is naturally good at fighting, not only due to size, but because he's scrappy and has good reflexes, durability, etc.

And with years and years of training at an elite level in his chosen discipline?

The analogy Tuco should have gone for was Bob Sapp.

Mountain's size and superhuman strength is the edge on an already proficient sword fighter. If he just had skills or only size and strength he would be an average noble. But with all assets he is basically Heinrich from RtCW

House Clegane is all of 2 generations. FFS their father was the houndmaster of Tywins limp dick father.

Imagine if Bryan Cranston gained like 50lbs of muscle and was Areo Hotah. Boner, right?

Why would I do that? Lesnar is the perfect comparison to Gregor Clegane. Both are inhumanely huge and athletic. Both have an immense amount of training.

You guys saying he's just some big dude are off the mark. He's not a finesse fighter but he knows how to kill.

What do you guys think the Mountain does in his spare time?

He's been Lordling over the Klagane domain for quite a while I figure.
I don't particularly picture him going over accounting books and judging over petty shit his peons are arguing over. I doubt he reads much books or browse forums.

When the men are training in the courtyard, do you think he eats an apple and dispense wise advises or pick up a sword himself and swing it with them?
You can bet he's doing the latter, and he's been doing that his entire life. His fighting style relies on strength and aggression, but make no mistake, he's a trained fighter, that's basically all he's been doing for 30+ years.
