They could do so much filler in Esos cities we haven't really seen, with Tyrion. You know you want to see that motherfucker hang out in Qarth and see some warlock shit.

They can easily do an entire episode with Bran greening with a tree. Tower of Joy, perhaps? Nerds would cream their jorts. Or Dunk and Egg. Or battle of the Trident. ANYTHING with Rhaegar, really would be cool.

They've got a ton of excess material they can pull out as filler til GRRM gets them more meat for their stories.

I'm pretty happy with the character changes they've made. But the adaptation is strongest when they fill in events that aren't in the povs in the books. Things like cersei and Robert's final conversation in s1 where they define the entirety of robert's character with one line of dialogue (he didn't even remember how lyanna looked like, just pissed that someone took something from him). Hot pie was awesome and pod and gendry are way more interesting in the show than in the books.

I hope they conflate trystane and aegon into one character, since they're both bullshit anyway. They spent enough time developing dornish sympathy for tyrion that it would still be memorable for nonreaders.

Dunk and egg is almost certainly the 'other' asoiaf project they mentioned in that interview.

Robb's wife was a really interesting character in the show, while barely a footnote in the books.

Having her name the baby Ned just so that they could soulcrush the audience by killing Ned again was the single most brilliant addition to the show.

Has anyone here been disappointed by the appearance of any character?

I wasn't expecting Bloodraven to look like a normal old dude. The Child of the Forest was a little underwhelming as well.

The characters in Bran's arm of the story have been pretty weak in general.

Arya is becoming a cold-hearted killer.
Bran is mind-controlling people.
Sansa is turning into a mastermind's slut.
Rickon ran off with a wildling woman.

Is Jon Snow the only "Stark" not turning into an asshole? I think they're going to be the new evil.

Not sure how you think Bran is evil. Everything he's done when he warg's into Hodor has only been for his own protection.

Arya isn't evil, she's simply misunderstood with a lot of justifiable revenge homicide on her plate.

I'd say she switched to the evil side when she didn't kill the Hound. He was genuinely protecting her at the end and even though he wasn't nice and honorable it's still evil to not ease his suffering.

I think they are probably targeting 8 seasons. Season 5 will cover the remaining books in abbreviated fashion. They'll hit the major points, but they are going to have to cut a lot of the traveling, wall politics, minor POVs, etc. That will let the season be more or less action packed and prevent the show from losing viewers, particularly given what people have come to expect after the last 15 episodes or so.

Book 6 will come out early next year, probably before Season 5 premiers so that the production team will have enough time to read it and start writing out scripts for season 6 on time. I'm sure they already have a broad outline of the book already, so they will really only need to read it to help fill in details/specific scenes. I suspect book 6 will have enough content to stretch out over two seasons, and the first part of season 6 will probably cover a few things they didn't have time to get to in season 6.

The big problem will be book 7. GRRM will only have about 2 years to crank it out assuming book 6 is out just by the deadline. He released books 2 and 3 in that kind of time frame, so he is capable, but recent history doesn't give much reason to be optimistic. Even getting book 6 out in time is pretty iffy. If he misses the show production window really anything could happen. It would pretty be weird to write a novel when the story has been finished already by a wildly popular TV show. It would be like writing one of those lame blockbuster novelizations, which I'm sure he doesn't want to do. Honestly I could see him just scrapping the idea of finishing the series entirely and shift his focus to other things.

So yeah, Myrcella is recast for s5 in addition to casting Maggy the frog and young Cersei presumably for the Valonqar. Hopefully we'll get something about Howland Reed or a young Lyanna for S5 since if they're ever gonna do RL+J theyre gonna need more than a couple monologues from season one.

If you think about it, they can easily move the Maggy+Cersei's prophecy from some bullshit festival in Lannisport forward in time and do the whole thing at the tournament in Harrenhal with Lyanna and Rhaegar. It's exactly the sort of elision the adaptation does very well. We could hear the valonqar prophecy played out at the same place as Lyanna suiting up as the Knight of the Laughing tree. Some HBO excel jockey will prolly shit on it and we'll get Littlefinger telling a story while waxing some whore's pubes instead. Closest thing we've gotten to a cast member nodding at the theory was an oblique hint duringNed's post-decapitation interview back in 2011.

Yeah, I was a bit confused there. Expected them to look way cooler.

Also, what was the deal with the Child raping those skeletons? Was she using some kind of grenade thing, or are we just going into straight up DND fireball territory? Feels a bit out of place, compared to the books, where the magic of the Children (what we hear about it and what little we see of it) is a lot more subtle, in line with most of the rest of the magic?

Or did that happen in the book and I just forgot? I had to force myself through a good chunk of ADWD.

It was magic missile.

As for the Cersei flashback (which makes me wonder, since this show really hasn't done flashbacks), I think a young girl works best because it helps cement how fucked up Cersei is and has more of a "she's a psycho" impact than a teenager doing it.

maggy the frog scene will be the first flashback they use. if that is an attempt to stall for time til GRRM cranks out book 6, then it may not be the only flashback we get.
