Are those not popular in the US? I'm not sure I've seen those before. I had to make sure I wasn't confusing those with macaroons.

Are those going to be the cupcakes of the 2010s? Boutique macaron shops run by hipster baker chicks selling them for 5 bucks a pop?

Don't know about hipsters, but it's certainly become a lot more popular over the last few years here(France). A lot of high quality patisseries selling macarons of all sorts, and specifically making room to add more macarons over other types of stuff. Shit's expensive as fuck, and totally not worth the price in most cases as you can make some really good ones fairly easy and the fresher the better imo. Can find some good ideas for fillings though by checking the shops.

They are pretty much this/last years cupcakes. Pretty damn tasty when done well, and pretty pricey as well. Around $2 from what I've seen/had.

Has anyone discovered a replacement that has gorgeous pictures and seemingly well-vetted/curated recipes? Pinterest appears retarded in comparison and it's hard to go back to other recipe sites (e.g. foodnetwork, chow, epicurious, Bon Appetit).

I may have answered my own question:http://www.foodily.com/

Foodily appears okay, but lacking in content. It seems like you have to know what you're looking for and be content with less pictures a page, but it's not bad.

Made some Double Chocolate Coca Cola Cake tonight and that shit is delicious!

Recipe in the spoiler.
Double Chocolate Coca Cola Cake

1 cup Coca Cola (real thing, not diet)
1/2 cup oil
1 stick butter
3 Tablespoon cocoa
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla

Frosting:

1 stick butter
3 Tablespoon cocoa
6 Tablesppon of cream or milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 3/4 cups confectioner's sugar

In a saucepan, mix Coca Cola, oil, butter and cocoa and bring to a boil. In another bowl, combine the sugar, flour and salt. Pour the boiling Cola mixture over the flour mixture and beat well. Add the eggs, buttermilk, soda and vanilla and beat well. Pour mixture into a greased and floured 13 x 9 inch baking pan and bake at 350 degrees or 20 to 25 minutes. Remove pan. Cool for about 10 minutes before frosting.

Frosting: In a saucepan, combine the butter, cocoa, and milk. Heat until the butter melts. Beat in the remaining ingredients and spread on the cake while it's still warm. Enjoy!

Does soda add anything to a cake besides taste? I've made Dr. Pepper cake out of the dino bbq cookbook(I doubt it's original), and it's really good, but does it do anything chemically?

I made a cheesecake over the weekend and it was meh. I did something wrong and the cream cheese didn't mix fully with the sour cream so the consistency was off throughout the whole thing. My thought is that the cream cheese was still too cold when I threw it in the mixer so it didn't mix well. Still tastes good, it just isn't cheesecake. More like sweet sour cream pie or something.

How long did you beat the cream cheese and eggs? Whenever my wife makes cheesecake, she lets the cream cheese come to room temperature, then puts that and the eggs in the kitchen aid on high speed for 5 minutes. She can't manage to cook it without a crack. Which I don't give a shit about, but it's fun poking her about it.

I only beat it for about 2 minutes and the cream cheese was still cold, had only been sitting out for about an hour. The last one I cooked was absolutely perfect, perfect top and everything. I wish I had gotten a picture of it. Oh well, there's always next time.
