We made homemade tomato sauce once from hand picked tomatoes. It wasn't good. It was basically super super diced up tomatoes, almost a sweet salsa. I am sure we screwed it up.
I'm of the opinion that homemade tomato sauces require some form of a mirepoix to get right more often than not.

My idea of a tomato sauce is roasted tomatoes, sauteed mirepoix + Garlic and herbs blended saving a bit of roasted tomato added in after the blend.

That's certainly one way to do it. You can also get that roasted taste by giving your onions and garlic a heavy sear before adding the tomatoes. There are many ways to skin this cat.

Those look good.

I did pulled pork with the new slow cooker last weekend. It makes it entirely too easy to make awesome pulled pork. I'm going to get fat as fuck with this thing if I'm not careful.

Did you take some out and quick-sear it in a pan at all or just sauce it/serve it straight from the slow cooker?

I torched some for tostados, but most of it was just shredded/juiced and put on some really good kaiser rolls. I could eat that every day.

I just bought a 16lb Boston Butt at $1.88/lb. Gotta cut this mother into quarters and feast for days/freeze the rest.

What would you say you spent on all that? Setup not included.
The food itself? The butt roast was 11 bucks and just under 5 lbs. Everything else was less than 10 bucks(rolls/tortillas/toppings). So about 21 bucks, I guess.

That's a pretty good price. About what it is here on sale. Last year was .99 on sale. I miss last year.

You guys are lucky as fuck, I'm guessing most of you live closer to the south to have pork prices that low?

I love pork but it's on par with beef prices up here.

I live in the south/not really southern of south Florida. Pork is always much cheaper than beef here.

I live in Connecticut. But for some reason pork and chicken have been cheap lately. Beef is still expensive though.

I expect prices for a lot of my food to go up a bunch more than they are already due to the woogieboogie happening at the ports right now.

West coast shipping armageddon

RIP food costs.

I've heard a bit about that, but what's actually happening?

Also, stuff should go down in price (ideally) since gas prices are bottoming out.

Chicken here has been stupid cheap at the supermarket - yesterday, the boneless breasts were $1.19 a pound. Pork is not cheap here, though. How strange that it is so different all over.

I recently procured a deep fryer, and I've been making onion rings. They're so easy, and so yummy. I'm making them tonight, and the kids asked me to make the batter really spicy. I think I'm going to add cayenne pepper to the flour, but do you guys have other thoughts on how to make tasty, spicy onion rings?

Cayenne works good. Old Bay in the flour is a good flavor too.

Labor issues causing trucks to wait 7hours to drop off and pickup shipping containers. Huge traffic backups just yesterday downtown at the port. Apparently it's going to cost the westcoast like 1.5bil a day if it continues this way.

Not sure on exact details.
