Cool, that chicken looks easy and good. A whole lot less greasy than the real KFC.

I'm going ghetto tonight, and making sloppy joes. Anyone have a killer sloppy joe recipe? I usually just wing it.
Just wing it. We did that with tacos last night and they were the best I've ever had.

When I make sloppy joes it's just sauteed onions and garlic, then add the ground beef and season with salt, pepper, chili powder, and maybe a little cayenne if you want it spicy. Then add ketchup until the texture looks right, put in a tablespoon or so of yellow mustard, and I like to add a splash of vinegar. Taste it and adjust spice/mustard/vinegar. I like to put diced onions and sliced pickles on my sloppy joes. Never served this to anyone that didn't love it even though some people will wag their finger at me for using ketchup.

"wagging" your "finger," huh?

I do something similar, but typically use tomato paste, as it is less sweet. Or I puree a tomato and use that.

Never had pickles on top, though. That sounds good. I'ma try that.

Speaking of using ketchup inappropriately, has anyone been to Alton Brown's live show? My parents bought my wife and I tickets and while I really appreciate the thought, I'm worried it's essentially going to be review for an exam I already aced.

In case you didn't get the segue, he put ketchup in his Bolognese sauce.

For shits and giggles, I used ketchup. My kids thought it was the best, ever.

Everyone also loved the addition of the pickles. Tasty as heck.

You know, I kind of like Alton Brown. Kind of.

I really liked his 'River Road' bike trip (We've mirrored a good part of the show, and it's been a blast) and the other Feasting on Asphalt shows, and I love learning the science of the foods on 'Good Eat's.' But damn, those skits and shit were horrible and dumb. I can't even imagine what a stage show might entail.

He overacts as the host of Iron Chef America, and I can't even begin to get myself to watch his new show.

Having spewed all that, I think his stage show will be fun to watch, and I'd go if someone gave me tickets.

I loved everything about Good Eats, skits, food science and recipes all or it tied in perfectly to make the perfect cooking/science show.

Yeah, Good Eats was such a great show. Food Network kind of sucks now.

Anyone have some recommendations for a good, programmable slow cooker? Under 75 bucks?

I think it's pretty hard to go wrong with slow cookers. I've been pretty happy with my Crock Pot.

Programmable in what way? I have one that has a probe and it turns to warm after meat reaches a certain internal temp, do you mean like that?

Here it is.

It's awesome, best slow cooker I've ever owned. I got it on sale a year or so back for $30.
Yeah, that one looks good. I was reading reviews and there's a good amount where they just start shutting off before they finish cooking. That has me a little wary, but it still seems one of the better buys.

Yeah I saw those too but of the three I know people have bought none have had the issue. Mind you, you can set it to auto shut off as well after a certain time, makes me feel like that's what's happening to those people but who knows.

Being able to program it to auto-start after a delay would be awesome for those recipes who only want to cook 4-6 hours while you're at work. Otherwise for most slow cooker recipes I've done I don't think you can really overcook it by just letting it sit on low for 8-10 hours. Just get something cheap and well-reviewed I guess. /shrug

My girlfriend and I have been doing a "Slow Cooker Challenge" all week. Each breakfast and dinner we've had has been in the slow cooker with our leftovers eaten for lunches. It's been fun and delicious and extremely easy. Can't say it's really been much cheaper based on our meal choices, but the time savings have been really nice and it's been a fun little experiment to boot. Give it a try if you want to mix things up.

Get a timing circuit. No need to throw away your current slow cooker.
