There's maybe 1 movie every year or two that is actually improved by 3D (Avatar, Gravity...uhh, thats about it). That's definitely not worth paying a significant amount extra.

Hi guys long time no see. Anyone that's fine done research recently know the best tv I can get around 1000 I'd like a 60 inch. I tried getting a used Panasonic plasma st60 but have had no luck and gave up on that idea. Should I just settle for a vizio?

If you want to go plasma, you have a lot of good options under $1000.

I'd go with this:
60" LG Plasma - $699

I love my LG Plasma, have had it for about 2 years now and it looks phenomenal. Yeah, it's not quite as good as a Panasonic, but it's like 95% as good for 1/3 the price. LGs are a hell of a great value.

why do that when you can do this:

60M In-store Only - $599 - Slickdeals.net

just picked one up for $600 for the new apartment. almost didn't get it because the dumbfuck sales guy told me if i put it flat in the back of my pickup the thing would break or something.

the one knock on it is apparently there's some bad input lag, but i don't really care much at this point in my life.

i will add that from what i've seen in 4K TVs so far i believe they live up to the hype, it's just a matter of waiting until the content catches up.

Yeah, that's mostly why I didn't go with one. They are absolutely gorgeous though. Also, part of my justification for going with the 8k series was for the illusion (since I'm not sure I'd do it) of being able to upgrade it in the future and of course the always expensive 'it's the newer of the shinies'.

Pulled the trigger on the 60ST60 last fall, absolutely love the TV and very sad that Panasonic gave up on the market, but $ is king obviously. If had had to buy today, I'd either go Samsung or Vizio, Vizio has made great headway in quality it seems

Not sure it's worth it though, by time 4K content is prevalent, you will probably be ready to upgrade, and mainstream 4k sets will be very reasonable.

Depends on how fast they can get out Red Ray.
For cable, and streaming it will be very limited although Netflix does have some content already.

The problem with 4K is getting all the broadcasting to switch to it. It took them a decade to roll out 1080, and now you want 4K? Never gonna happen. Not this soon. 4K might become a niche type medium. But never mainstream at least not in the foreseeable future. this is especially compounded with our shitty internet and cable connections here in the US.

most TV is broadcast in shitty compressed 720p or 1080i. Netflix and other streaming content arent any better at this point. problem is most people dont know the difference so its a low priority for the cable companies.

Most people are like my wife. She's happily watches standard-def channels on our 55" plasma, she claims she can't tell any difference between that and the HD version of the channel.

I think 4K will be a format that only movie and possibly video game enthusiasts use for a while. I'll be all over 4K as soon as the majority of new movie releases start becoming available in a 4K format of some sort for home use. HD was the same way. I had an HDTV for like 2-3 years before my local cable company offered any HD programming at all. I happily played my XBOX and PS2 on it though, and it looked goddamned great(in games that actually supported HD). Sucks that the Xbone and PS4 weren't created with 4K in mind though :/

I'm a little hesitant to believe that you get true 4K quality at Netflix's recommended bandwidth of 15Mbps. That seems really low, that has to be a compressed quality of 4K at that kind of speed. We just all need some Google Fiber ASAP for glorious streaming, uncompressed 4K

The only true 4k will be from Red Ray.

I should probly stop purchasing Blue Rays right now since it's not even that far off.

Am I the only one who sometimes dislikes these super high res movies we have now? It's at the point where, with extremely high res and a massive TV, you can see the fucking make up on the actors faces and props look like, well, props. I don't want to go back to standard def, but at a certain point it seems like we're getting into overkill.

i watch a few movies a week and only use 1080p bluray rips, don't really notice it in good movies. In porn yeah you definitely, definitely notice how beat up some of the people are and see shit like bruises and cellulite and scars, even saw track marks on some chicks thighs and that made me sad and lose a boner

but shit like Wolf of Wall Street or Riddick are astounding in 1080p and will be even better in 4k since they are pros that do that shit with RED 4k or 8k source cameras

if you have a 4k display or even a 1440p PC monitor you can download the 4k rip of this 12 minute open source CGI short, its 12 gigs in full 4k but can give you a good idea of what it looks like compared to regular rez
Download | Tears of Steel

anything rendered/CGI definitely notice the difference, there are UHD rips of How to Train your Dragon too and they are amazing

Love my new LG LED that I snagged from Costco last week. It recognizes Plex with no issues, so no need to use a Roku or Chromecast or anything like that. My Plex server from my PC just shows up as an additional TV input when I change sources. I'm really liking not having to use a separate device to have access to all my media. I know smart TVs generally aren't as robust or powerful as a dedicated device would be, but the convenience factor is hard to deny.

Snagged this:
LG 55" Class 1080p 120Hz Smart LED HDTV 55LB6100

Damn good value at $799 + the extra year warranty from Costco for free

It's basically the same TV as this model that is in standard retailers that runs $1099:http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-55-cl...5%22&cp=1&lp=1

the Costco one is a TN panel though rather than IPS. I looked at both though, the TN at Costco and the IPS at Best Buy, and I really saw no difference in color levels or brightness or anything, the only noticeable difference was the IPS was a little clearer at extreme side angles, whereas the TN panel got a little dark if you are view from far to the side(like more than 45 degrees to the side) Anything close to a normal viewing angle was indistinguishable between the two TVs.
