So does anyone have their heart set on a black friday TV deal? There are so many that I can't make up my mind. And I don't want to get a "black friday special" model with limited features. The only features I care about are 55"+, 3+ HDMI, 1080p and <$600.

Does that exist? I went looking for TVs with those specs too and I couldn't find anything(of quality) for less than $700. BJ's is going to have the Samsung UN55J6300 at $700 for Black Friday.

Now that plasmas aren't a thing are OLEDs the ones you want to go to for similarly black blacks now?

Sure, if you can afford it. OLED is crazy expensive right now

I've had Plasma, LCD, and LED TVs, and honestly a good quality LED is damn near as good as a Plasma.

Theres a bigger gap in quality between LCD and LED, than LED and Plasma IMHO (And I say this as someone who owns an LG Plasma and an LG LED right now, and I had the Plasma first)

Ah, it's been a while since I shopped TVs - forgot that LCDs were the ones that were mostly gray vs. decent blacks. I am particular about the quality of my blacks though - guess I'll have to showroom it sometime, I don't like the extra cost to OLEDs (I can afford it but, so much more) and if it's not enough to notice, screw that noise.

One of the Costcos I go to had something like 30-40 TV models out already. I'm frustrated reading the bite sized descriptions of all these TVs. There's no possible way to distinguish what the fuck half of them do vs the others within the same brand. It's like 32 digit model ID, a bunch of garbage claims that are similar and a display model. They all have dumbass names for what should be standards so I have no idea what any of it means. I hate black friday shit, I'll probably just wait again.

Yes. Not similar, though, but typically better.

I thought I've seen the 55inch LG OLED around $1500 a few times +/- fiddling with promotions, rebates, etc. I wouldn't really call it crazy expensive if you're someone who cares about picture quality. Price could be lower with better competition and if they didn't jam-pack tvs full of so much bloated features and gimmicks. But shrug, you have to decide for yourself if it's worth it.

For me, no doubt if I were buying a tv right now I'd go OLED. Just like a couple years ago when I was researching TVs heavily it was easy for me to decide on a Samsung F8500 Plasma despite people arguing their LED/LCDs were better. And awkwardly people are still arguing their high-end, current generation LED/LCD is better than 2+ year old plasma TVs that were being built on dying/unevolving technology. But hey, whatever, think of it this way: even if the high level LED/LCDs now are reaching the quality if plasma tvs from years ago, those LED/LCDs still sure as hell aren't OLED quality.

The decisions is to shell out for the best picture quality in OLED, or buy yourself something cheap to get you through the next few years until OLED is more competitive.

If you don't notice the difference or don't care, then just buy an LED. Keep in mind that doesn't mean there isn't a difference, though. And if you're judging a picture quality in a lit showroom you're being misled. If there's a magnolia or similar place in your area that has dark demo rooms I'd recommend that. Most TVs these days can be cranked up on high brightness for daylight viewing, but not all of them can still look good in a dark/low-light room.

Looking at replacing a Samsung F8500 I believe (I'd have to spin it to check the model number) conveniently enough, heh. (As a primary TV, it would still be around, just as an extra TV in a less used room)

Why would you replace the best plasma ever made?
Mainly because it's only a 51" - small by today's standards... and wife has been complaining that her gaming TV is "only" 37" [that she plays from around 4 ft, mind you...] - so it would go to becoming her gaming TV and we'd need something bigger as our primary. [Although looking back, I think I fibbed a little - it's probably not changing rooms - just location within the "office" that all our gaming stuff/PCs is in - changing location within the room, not relocating rooms (which is a good thing anyway, it's heavy)]

But I am quite concerned about color quality on the replacement. Heck, every time I get a Cable dude out here they always comment on how great the picture is on it (as an "old" TV mind you) clearly because the color/blacks are so amazing. [and in a darkened room, mind you]

Because it's not that best plasma ever made! That title belongs to Panasonic!. Love my VT, prob should have went ZT for best ever!
As an owner of the F8500 I don't disagree, but I'd still like him to answer the question.

edit: answered.

If 51 isn't big enough, the cheaper 55 OLED that are [relatively] affordable won't feel like much of a size increase. The higher quality LCD/LED 60inch and above are still going to cost you, though not as much as the bigger OLED.

Is 51inch feeling too small for your space, or just too small because you know there are bigger sizes available? I sometimes look at 70inch and thing what if, but in reality my 60 inch is absolutely the perfect size I wanted, needed, and keeping enjoying despite some size envy I feel occasionally. I guess I'm asking because you could just get the wife a bigger gaming screen to buy yourself a few more years, then make a real investment into what will surely be even better picture quality at that time.

Apparently we bought the in laws a new TV for Christmas / Birthday. They're very much not interested in the best and have been using a 40" Samsung for as long as I've been with their daughter, so 10 years? We got them a Vizio 55" E Series and it seems perfectly fine for parental purposes. Was like $450? Need to check with brother in law. Smart apps work easy and they know how get to Netflix and Amazon. Throwing it out there if anyone is looking for an inexpensive TV for the holidays.

Can you link it?

Also what are thoughts on Newegg refurb tvs? They have a Samsung fh6003 or something for $400ish. 55 inch led tv, 120hz refresh rate.

Just looking for something decent yet cheap for the office.

Were you meaning to quote me? I don't really care about going over 51" - sweet spot in pricing seems to me like 55" is where it's at though, maybe 60" with BF discounts - mostly about replacing the wife's 37" and figuring our "primary" TV that we watch everything on should be the largest in the house though.

Think I'm going to pick up this TV, assuming I can find a version locally that wins the panel lottery:

Amazon.com: Samsung UN55J6300 55-Inch 1080p Smart LED TV (2015 Model): Electronics

Not ready to buy into 4k yet. Might have gone with the J6200 if some of the reviews hadn't mentioned that wall mounting it was a bit problematic. Also considered the Vizio E series but I've read some reviews that its sound kinda sucks(even for a TV), can anyone confirm? Not going to be buying a sound system for my tv. Also heard the LED dimming on the Vizio kinda sucks, I've seen it on some of their older models. Dark scenes can get horrible blooming.

Never wall mounted a TV before, so no idea what to look for there. Just go onto amazon and find the highest/most rated?

Also, I have about 3/4 of an inch of wood(rustic wall decoration courtesy the previous owners) and the standard amount of drywall to go through before getting to the stud. Anything I should consider in this situation besides buying extra long wood screws(and a drill bit) to cover the extra distance through the decorative wood?

The past 3.5 days or so of watching the E series here have certainly shown me issues with the dimming. Even with brightness / backlight calibrated, auto brightness, 2.2 or 2.4 gamma, I just can't get it to look right. Also consider I'm the only person out of 8 people that has noticed it, so ymmv. Either way there is very noticeable to me horrible blooming in dark scenes. Like even on a Netflix of Amazon loading screen, with the little pinwheel thing spinning... as it goes round and round whichever side the brighter rotation is on will have a large halo extending out toward the edge of the TV. I'll try to see if my phone can capture a picture of it tomorrow.

Sound has been just regular TV sound. Dunno what to tell you as I'm not sure how to compare it, it all sounds the same to me coming out of an HDTV.
