Maybe when the mass shootings increase in frequency to 2-3 per day your government will start taking the (mental) health of American citizens seriously. Who knows though.

I think you are misinformed. The Democrats controlled the House when Obama got elected in 2008. They lost it because of Obamacare in the 2010 election.
More than that, since redistricting went into effect in 2010, no?

2010 was mentioned and I looked up the house numbers. Although it was passed in March of 2010 the election didn't flip flop until November and the members got sworn in for 2011 I guess. I didn't recall when it passed when I posted that although Republicans are in general staunchly opposed to single payer the situation in Congress was different than what I posted.

I'm not sure there has been even a semi serious attempt at single payer. I know Hillary kind of pushed for it at one point back in the 90's but I don't recall that going anywhere but talk. Same with the Republican push during that era for their own version of Obamacare. Went no where.

How much money can you sue doctors for medical malpractice in a single payer system? Is it safe for me to assume everyone here is aware that personal injury trial lawyers are the single largest source of political donations to Democrat politicians? They donate millions of dollars every election cycle to help elect Democrats in exchange for ensuring Democrats thwart any attempt at tort reform that would reduce the primary source of income for personal injury lawyers. That would be my bet for why Democrats didn't even attempt to implement a single payer system.

I wonder how people would vote on this poll now. I voted yes originally I believe, but my vote would certainly be no now.

I guess on actually looking, I voted no. Oh well.

still yes. PPACA was a step forward. We got what we could get with the blue dogs. I still smile thinking about how Rahm Emanuel walked into a shower to cuss out some naked conservative democrats for not toeing the party line.

What's the connection between mental illness and availability of health care Rescorla?
Do you always have problems putting 2 and 2 together? Usage of illicit drugs increases the rate of suffering from mental illness. A person's lifestyle choice to use illicit drugs is not related in any way to whether a country has socialized or private healthcare system. The percentage of people in the US using illicit drugs is increasing as well as the percentage of people suffering from mental illness. The term for that is a direct correlation. If you want to prevent more and more people suffering from mental illness, you have to reduce/cutoff the source of illicit drugs. That won't be popular with the typical leftwing voter.

I don't see how single payer and suing doctors are related; single payer just addresses how the Dr's get paid. Currently it doesn't matter if you're a medicare patient or private insurance or cash patient when suing for med mal, why would it matter if you're on single payer?

I thought the question and the following point was fairly obvious. Let me restate it for clarification. Can lawyers in Canada sue doctors for medical malpractice and win multimillion dollar claims like they can in the US?

Either we pay for everyone's coverage in increased fees via the capitalist system...
... or, we pay for everyone's coverage in taxes via socialist systems.

Yes the government is inefficient, often corrupt on the micro and macro levels, and all that. But they, theoretically, still have my best interest at heart.

Compare that to the capitalist system, in which, start to finish, companies only have their bottom lines as primary motivators and consumers are nothing more but inputs.

Sure, sure, *on paper* capitalism has competition and all the other theoretical balancing factors. But in reality, we see collusion and we see maximizing the short term rewards to shareholders over long term growth/health of the company *OR* the people it services.
