You have to go best of 3 if you are going to do tournaments and you have to do sideboards and you will already be at least two times the match length as a result and they don't want that.
You start doing that and it's a slippery slope with rotating blocks like Magic and other card games.
Blizzard is avoiding all of that as much as they can.

If you want REAL competitive matches you can't just go with just pick a class like they do now, it's too much unneeded RNG.
They are doing it casual though. That also wasn't by Blizzard design that was just how the tournaments were done because there just isn't a real good mechanic for sideboarding in the game.

I agree with you on the match length thing, they'd probably rather just provide this infrastructure for people to host their own rather than make it an official game mode I guess. Who knows how this thing will function really, they tend to implement extra stuff in unexpected ways. Not always in a good way, like brawls and the D3 AH. They will be hell bent to bring it out in whatever cockeyed fashion they've devised though.
Yeah they do not want to be like other card games and they want matches to be as fast as possible. It's their niche right now.

It's not a niche, it's a substantial market. There's quite a few people that want to play games, but they don't have the time to commit to a long play session. I keep coming back to Hearthstone because it's a great, quick game, despite my desire to play this game not exactly being in line with how quickly it angers me. Perhaps related: quite eagerly awaiting D3 2.3 patch.

The main reason why a best of X with a single deck and a sideboard wouldn't work in Hearthstone is mainly because Blizzard doesn't release hate cards that are anywhere near as powerful as what Magic does. If I play meddling mage on one of your main combo pieces or manage to extirpate your kill condition, you are fucked. The strongest hate card Blizzard has ever produced is probably Loatheb, and it had a negligible effect on the power of miracle rogue, even post Leeroy nerf. A big part of this is that you rarely see such dramatic mismatches between high level magic decks as you do between hearthstone decks. One of the worst magic mismatches I ever experienced first hand was white weenie vs gifts combo in Kamigawa block constructed, but white weenie had some powerful sideboard options against gifts combo that would bring you back to parity or even favored in the match.
Right now the best of X switch heroes if you lose is probably the best format that can be done for tournaments.

Oh, there's a Worgen Infiltrator and a voodoo doctor in there that got cutoff, so there's a couple of 1 drops, too. After the 10th pick I took every 1 and 2 drop offered, and this is how it ended up. Sometimes you don't have an option.

Not a top tier deck, it has a ceiling. Maybe good for laddering fast early on, but that's about it. And face hunter is much better at it too.

Only way i can win against control warriors with freeze mage is if they somehow fuck up using their armorsmiths and get minimal value out of them.
