Messing around in "Try" mode with different Heroes, haven't really found any that really click with me aside from Nova and Zer which I'm not sure I feel good about, as they're both pub-stompy heroes and so they're gonna be popular anyway and probably nerfed before long.

Edit: Guess I just like their playstyle of move around, take advantages, move more. And I felt like I had more meaningful talent choices with them than most others.

Zeratul probably won't be looking at nerfs anytime soon. He's one of the heroes in the game with probably the highest skill cap. His void prism can make or break teamfights when used.

If you want to go for assassins I personally like Tychus, Valla and Raynor. Warriors I prefer Arthas and Stitches. I haven't played support in a while but Uther and Brightwing are popular.

So there's no mute/report function in the game yet?

Edit: Also, wtf is this, my game crashed and I loaded back into it. It goes down like 4 seconds every second then back up 2 seconds.

Edit #2: Ok, you can block/report people after the game I see, that's something at least.

You can mute players by hitting "Tab" and clicking on the "..." icon at the right right of the screen. This also blocks the player.

You can report players after the game by right clicking on the player's name/portrait and selecting "Report Player"

That screen is the buggy/mostly doesn't work reconnect feature. It is like #1 priority on their to-do list.

Figures I'm attracted to the high skill cap hero, lol. Those are my favorites in League too (Zed, Yasuo, etc.) Probably end up grabbing Zer first cause he's not in any bundles if I decide to grab one later

He has a few ways you can build him. The high skill way is playing him mostly as a teamfight support Zeratul. Waiting for a hero or two to be out of position running to a teamfight, throwing prison down on them and winning the teamfight 3v5. Or if your team is coordinated use knockbacks into prisons.

The other way to build him, and probably more common in pubs, is basically as a stealth Illidan. Personally I think he sucks with this build. He is super squishy and very easy to take down.

Is it just me or are most of the warrior types just not that great? Stitches is the only one that actually feels even remotely tanky, and that's because of you can talent for a 30% self heal. The rest just feel too frail or don't provide enough CC to be worth playing so far.

I don't know, I was in a game the other day and was against a team with two tanks and we just couldn't kill anyone the tanks were so beefy, but then again I was nazeebo and I had almost double the next highest hero damage with a valla and zeratul in my group.

But other than stitches, thats where the talent system really shines, you can build tanky or more towards dps. Diablo is a tank on his own and can spec into a heal w/ his souls, arthas is a pub stomping machine, has both a heal and his undead army ult can heal him to full health, e.t.c. if you spec into his heal on his power ballad is a moderate amount of healing for the whole party, etc. All tanks have talents that make them tankier if need be.

Arthas has much better sustain than Stitches in most battles. He trades off some HP pool for better reliable self healing and he is also more damage focused. But the meta of the competitive scene very much disagrees with you since warriors are extremely valuable picks.

Warriors feel the most heavily influenced by whether you're ahead or not. Tanks that are above you in level are fucking brutal, and if they're below you in level it feels like they don't exist. From the pub perspective, at least.

I haven't tried Diablo yet but Stitches and Arthas are both pretty crazy if your team is keeping up. It's kinda pointless for me though since 90% of my solo matches are just free-to-play heroes vs free-to-play heroes.

Diablo isn't as good as either Stitches or Arthas. The good thing about Stitches is he doesn't directly do much damage but his passive grants so much hero damage by the fact that Stitches is simply alive. It isn't unheard of for Stitches to be #2/#3 on the damage meters. Same with Arthas but his damage is more direct. Diablo will never get that high unless he has some crazy Lightning Breaths in team fights.

Although I've heard some people pubbing Diablo with this build. It focuses more on being tanky, heavy use of LB due to Battle Mo and doing the usual Diablo stuff of knocking people out of position.

So after the initial newness wore off, I've been trying really hard to still like the game. Nova's damage has been incredibly frustrating to play against, and having to constantly be on shimmer patrol when moving across the map (when you'd rather look elsewhere while walking long distances) has been very tedious. Not to mention there are certain heroes that cannot break stealth effectively so even if you know the Nova/Zeratul are there, you're going to take insane burst and have to run.

Having large individual impact has been very hard... I have no idea how to "carry" a game. In Dota/LoL, a strong mid player can do so much damage that they just win the game by having such a large map presence and level/item advantage. It definitely feels like if you have a mediocre team composition or teammates who are unwilling to go for objectives, you just flat out lose. Anyone who has played this game way more have any suggestions?

I think many of the things you said are valid and which is probably why I doubt this game will leech players off pre-established DOTA and LoL players. HOTS is attempting to lure in people who want to play a MOBA-like game but don't have the desire and/or time to invest into becoming even competent at DOTA or LoL -- which in all honesty takes a really long time.

As for carry ranged assassins and warriors can both make or break fights. If you position yourself well as a ranged assassin to not get dived on you can output absurd amounts of damage in a teamfight. But here in lies the issue of "What if only 3 people show up?" And that is a valid problem. It gets better at high MMR. Honestly I find this game easier to play on my Tychus which has far-and-away the highest MMR of any of my other heroes. Simply because most people are coordinated. I don't want to simply cop-out and scream "ELO hell!" because I'm sure there are things I can do better on my Valla or Muradin to win games but when you constantly have someone not showing up for the dance it gets frustrating. I can only say I hope it gets better with ranked mode where you know for a fact everyone in the game is around the same skill level.

Another thing I try is the "Lead the horses to the water" approach of being the shotcaller on the team. I ping where we're going to go, I ping who we're going to kill and I ping what we're doing next. Even then sometimes you'll get jackasses on your team who are convinced they have the right idea and just don't do anything you say but you lose that game and move on with your life.

I haven't played in awhile now, but I was a fan of Tyrael for his pathing blockers and his finisher ultimate. I've heard he's pretty high up in organized team play, but I haven't really seen how people build him for that purpose.

Yeah, playing a class with no aoe is a real pain against nova. One of the many reasons I like tassadar is because of oracle and his boss aoe against stealthy things.

Nova has counters for sure but it is a problem with the blind picking system when there aren't any present. Yes Tassadar shuts her down hard. Chen is a good counter as well. But if you don't have a good counter on your team she can run ham. She'll probably get tuned down (either take away Rewind, put Rewind on the same tier as OD, or increase Snipe cooldown by a few seconds) but if you could have a system like AP you could easily counter her as well.
