My schedule is erratic, so being able to change the programing or just turn on/off while not home is a big plus

My family is home so often that we’d definitely not get any value out of a smart thermostat. Is the idea to optimize your energy usage? I’m curious how much of an impact it would actually have. I’d think big swings in the temperature of the thermal mass of the home would negate whatever gains were achieved by limiting climate control activity.

No offence, but what's the attraction to the Nest and other "learning" thermostats? I read somewhere that the most desired feature of these thermostats is the learning part and the most disabled feature is the learning part. I personally use my thermostat, a cheapy, like an on/off switch. If it's cold/hot I turn the furnace/AC. I turn everything off at night. What am I missing?

I have a few Ecobee units, one upstairs, and one downstairs. Mine are tied into Alexa, so I can turn off heat or ac without getting up or out of bed. It also has a motion sensor so I can set it to 85F when it detects that I am away. I can also access it remotely via my phone which I have never done. I don't think it learns anything like a Nest.

I put one in a friend's house with extra sensors and it evened out her temps. She only has one AC unit and two upstairs bedrooms. Thermostat is downstairs so it would be blazing hot upstairs. The extra sensor fixed that right away without the usual icebox downstairs/pizza oven upstairs issue she had.

Can you explain why you would shut off a breaker for the furnace to paint?

Meh, it was 70+ degrees and I was painting the room directly next to my furnace and water heater, I turned off the gas to both, figured I might as well cut the power too.

So every once in a while my garage door will stick when coming up and I hear kind of a loud pop. Starting it down and back up will open it fully. Not sure what would be causing that.

House explosion pic was deliberately set with natural gas to collect insurance payout, and killed two people.

Most people will have latex paints now, and aren't really a fire hazard.

Turning your furnace/AC off so you don't suck in particulate is a legit reason, though. Common when you sand down hardwood floors, too. Also take your smoke detectors down; that dust can wreck them.

i was looking at the top garages and wondering how they crumpled, while right on the top the windows are fine. Maybe the explosion pushed cars parked in the driveway, into the garages.

then i saw the bottom houses and their are fucked too and they face away from the explosion.

Just the pressure wave hitting those doors, which will act like a sail and will probably fold before the glass windows will. At the bottom of the pic, it's the internal pressure pushing outward after those homes were hit and pressurized, crumpling those doors on the opposite side.

Also LOL @ the melted vinyl siding at the top of the pic.

This sounds like we're missing part of a story here. Damper and vent adjustments?

Fuck wish I had thought to take down my smoke detectors, is it usual for one to go off over shower steam? Only went off once but fuck that noise.

Big Erronius Erronius what do you think about my Nest install? Should I do it on my own?
