All of my brother's counters in his kitchen are concrete. The formwork required to pour it all was pretty impressive. Looks great, and nearly indestructible. It was definitely not a DIY type of project though.

Why not DIY? From everything I have seen and read about it, its perfect for DIY. Other than getting some buddies to carry 600lb slabs after its formed.

Because the formwork required to hold up hundreds and hundreds of pounds of concrete was ridiculous. It was also a very large kitchen. To be clear, the counters were formed and poured in place, not carried in afterward.

Ahh ok, got you. Pour in place is a different monster. I dont think my troweling skills are up to par with pour in place.

Pour in place has some new shit going for it as well. Companies are making DIY kits for it, like the below... which sells snap off side profiles which act as forms. Pretty cool system. They also sell additives for regular bagged concrete mixes at the box stores.

I have been considering pouring my kitchen counters, but I've seen several kitchens where people did it and it looks like crap because they didn't do it perfectly. It's all about preparation, I think.

Well to tell you the truth, Any type of job would look better than my 1971 Formica counter top. and I dont have $6K for stone. Id rather spend that on a nice ass fridge and stove.

But i figure the hearth would be a good place to start to get my grove on. Learn the ins and outs. and if the hearth is not perfect, well its a hearth. Right?

If you are not trying cast in place it would be very possible to make a 6 ft long box or whatever and shake the shit out of it until it was prefect. When i did my hearth i used $5 a bag promix and black dye and the biggest problem with it is my shitty finish job. But even then i took regular sandpaper and an orbital polisher made it look pretty cool. Even if you could get a perfect finish id still grind it some to see the stone flakes cut in half etc. I formed it in place and that's the most difficult part along with not spilling shit all over

Ill try and post some pictures of the process, maybe even a video. Hopefully this weekend it will go down.

30 feet? WTF? Is this an industrial kitchen, some hipster loft place?
Nah, it was a fairly standard 1950's house that he gutted and rebuilt. The kitchen, living and dining room are just about 2/3's of the main floor. They go from the very back of the house to the front, extending over the garage below, so it's one huge room that's probably 60 feet long by 20 feet wide. He did the kitchen counters, island, bar, and eating area all in concrete. Maybe that one counter is only 20-25 feet, but it's pretty big.

My best friend redid his entire downstairs, putting in this enormous kitchen. He did it a year ago, and documented it all on Youtube. He did a great job, but then again, he does a great job at everything.

There's 23 videos, so I'm putting them behind a spoiler tag. They're actually going to be across the next few posts, because this board limits videos to 6 per post. Some of you might like seeing it, at the very least for ideas on what to do for your own property. The best part of this is my friend is a well paid accountant, and he's this talented at building things for his house.
