This seems like a more appropriate thread than Men’s Fashion so will ask here. My current pair of work boots are toast. They e lasted a good long while and are probably well past their actual expiration date. They’re Wolverines from Academy. When I was at the power company we had vouchers for new boots every so often so just went with whatever Academy had that met our requirements. Ceramic toe, etc.

Anyways, not there anymore. I do still go on site inspections at prospective tower locations around the State which requires some hiking. Mostly they would be for yard work, tree work, hiking, I’d use them while doing wood work. Not sure I could give up the safety toe but I no longer have the non conductive requirement.

Suggestions? Was reading a lot about Danner, Thorogood, Red Wing. Would like something safety toe, water resistant, 6” is fine instead of 8”. Nothing against the Wolverines just seeing what other options people like.
Used to get the yearly boot allowance too, but only spent part of the time in the field, so, I'd do a random sampling of goofball stuff if I liked my current pair and they weren't worn out yet - ended up getting EH rated slip-ons, sneakers, arctic boots, etc. I hated the only pair of Wolverines I owned, but that was mostly because I was a dipshit who listened to the fitting guy that claimed I should go a half size lower than usual and let them break in.

My favorite pair are some mid height Keen EH rated hiking boots. Look pretty similar to this:

Timberland pro was decent as well, but I always gravitated back to the Keens.

Looks like they have a lot of Keen in at the Bass Pro a bit away from me, I'll swing by there. Definitely not buying anything without trying it on first. Thanks, hadn't looked at those yet.

Not sure what you mean by Academy but Wolverines are sold at a lot of places including their website:

I don't have the type of foot Red Wings are made for. Every time I tried a pair I took them back almost immediately, they made my feet hurt. I also use my wolverines with the 'electricians toe' around the house all the time. I have 2 pair of Wolverine Hiking boots that I wear a lot too.

Since you're looking for a safety toe still, do you have a Hytest store near you? That's typically where I would get my boots from - they'd have a mobile shoe truck that would come to our site once a year and they also had a retail location I'd go to if I didn't like anything they had (they tended to push their Hytest branded stuff out of the mobile truck). Just thinking you'll get a better selection of safety toe stuff there since that's all they do.

Yeah just our generic sports store down here. We have a couple of Dick’s also but not near the presence. Never heard of Hytest. We have plenty of Bass Pro / Cabelas, and I can always hit REI when in Nashville.

Guess the actual Hytest retail stores are only in the upper Midwest - I assumed they had them all over the country since I recalled their shoe trucks said they were nationwide. Guess they just partner with a local company elsewhere.

Looks like Elliotts boots is what they have in Tennessee. Might be worth a look if one is close and Bass Pro's selection is limited.

Being Country here in Arkansas we have a lot of other small outdoor stores. Just not other chains. Just want to make sure to try the things on first.

I had a pair of Keen walking shoes and they fucking rotted my feet off because they didn't breathe and made my feet sweat all the time. They also smelled terrible. That was 20 years ago and I haven't had a pair since so it's probably not representative, but I am biased against them because of that experience.

If you're going to be hiking in them a lot I would really consider whether you need the safety toe. When I have had them walking up and down steep hills they had a tendency to skin my toe knuckles.

I cannot convey enough how much room both pairs of my safety toe Wolverine hiking boots have around the toe. That's one reason I loved them so much. I could order an 11 wide and there was zero 'break in' , they just fit like a glove. If you hike where rocks could fall I totally see where you would want a safety toe. But each their own and all that.

Looking at a new pair with safety toe is 100% because I developed bad habits over the last decade of having it on old boots. My toes became another tool for kicking things out of the way, nudging stuff on the ground, balancing things while lifting them and moving stuff. Everything you’re probably NOT supposed to do. It definitely isn’t a job requirement now, not like at the Utility.

heat pump has been acting up when going to aux/emergency heat. it will either start/stop like 10-20 times (very short bursts) then run as fine rest of the day. or will blow ice cold air, i guess, it thinks the heating coils are on, but are not.
was looking at the parts of the air handler unit and only thing seems like it could be is a sequencer as everything else seems like if it didn't work once wouldn't work at all, but not sure about it.
anyone had something similar?

Lanx Lanx I need a simple wifi thermometer/temp alarm I can use in utility spaces to see if they are going near freezing. Just want it to connect to Alexa, but it seems like most of these are the weather station type or have some base station style, whereas I'd rather just plug a sensor in and leave it. Any recommendations?

yea probably a govee would be good
Govee WiFi Thermometer Hygrometer H5179, Smart Humidity Temperature Sensor with App Notification Alert, 2 Years Data Storage Export, Remote Monitor for Room Greenhouse Incubator Wine Cellar

govee makes a lot of these single use devices, and it'll give you temp readings on wifi to your app, so you can also set alarms, like 50f too cold, beep beep. i used to have govee leak detectors b4 i moved all my stuff to wyze, i don't remember their app being great, but it'll work for what you want

I can’t speak to other devices but have a few of their lights. The app is decent enough, they also connected to the Google home app and work fine through that as well.
