My situation is closer to the first. But there is no way I'm going to try to do any work, I'll make it worse.

2nd contractor stopped by today. He suggested I buy the cabinets myself, and he will put them in, do the sub floor, and add/move outlets and lights for 8k and in 2 weeks. He told me permits aren't needed unless you're doing water work or tearing down walls. Feel a lot better now.

Any reviews of cabinets from Home Depot/Lowes/IKEA or are they all pretty much the same?
is this the 60k guy?

The 60k was a kitchen design company that would do everything except buy appliances. Guy today was someone that was working on a house on the block, looked latino but with almost native level English, so I don't think I have to worry about him getting deported during the middle of the project.

You do need permits to move electrical outlets, but that's well within the territory where people regularly exercise personal discretion.

I've used both Home Depot and Lowes cabinets. "Technically" the cabinets arent rated to hold heavy countertops like Granite, but Ive put granite on them and theyve been just fine. The doors themselves are thin as paper. I mean, hopefully you arent busting through them like some 17 year old white kid. But theyre cheap to replace. Just be sure you arent intending to buy the style that the Cabinet clerk will say is at its end of life or not. (Those are usually a good deal, so I get them a lot.) The hinges and the material arent strong enough for a small person to be hanging on, either. You know, like the video of the girl that gets her pants loop hung on the door and it swings her out. That shit aint happening. You also dont want to buy the cabinets that have big 3 foot wide drawers. There is barely any support in the middle of them, and a lot of silverware or w/e will bust out the bottom eventually. Lastly, they do not handle water well. So.. any leaks or anything, be ready to replace the floor of the cabinet.

With all that said, they are a FRACTION of the price of custom cabinets. You can also buy them in just about any configuration you want, too. Basically, even with all their faults - Im not against using their cabinets. Even with the thin materials they use, they still hold up to renters usually. So have at it.

Also, if you plan on redoing the counter tops, do "NOT" buy the countertops from the box stores or any retailer of them. Down here in Virginia, I buy all my counters from Piedmont Surfaces in Eden, NC. Did some Black Forest Granite as the counter, and the backsplash for a 16 foot long galley kitchen, with additional 3 foot ends on the backsplash. They cut the holes and installed it all in about 30 minutes for a whopping $1800. That same job was going to cost me close to 9k through Lowes.

Big box store cabinets are dogshit. It's worth spending the money for quality materials, construction, and installation.

Used the local HD for my kitchen/laundry/living room cabinet rehab. This was during COVID so everything was $$$$ and it took forever to get. Easily the biggest mistake I've made with this house. They pretty much fucked up every aspect of the install, including getting the measurements wrong. Irony is the 1st step is to pay them $100 to have a (turns out subcontractor) come out and do the measurements because your own numbers cannot be trusted.
Would not use again

For counters, he said he knows a supplier for granite and we will go together to order after the base cabinets are installed and we have final measurements.

We have a galley style with one end that is open so I dont have to be exact with my measurements. He said to subtract 3 inches on the closed side so he has a bit of room to work with. He suggested tiles for the flooring, is that good for a kitchen?

I was thinking about going all out and getting nice cabinets, but this is ultimately for my mother who doesnt cook that much, and just fix the floor and make the kitchen look clean again.

There are cabinet shops that are half the price of custom and so much better than lowes/HD cabinets. Call the local lumber and building products distributor and see if they offer a national brand (Wellborn, Kraftmade, MasterBrand) or do their own white box style cabinets. You will be somewhat limited in styles but it'll be built well and sturdy.

Daidraco Daidraco I know that place. They have some real nice slabs down there. It's crazy how much countertops can go for. I mean i get it, stone has infinite variations and finding the slab you like can be tough, hence the markup. My company built a house last year client had damn near 90k in countertops. Kitchen, 4 baths. Pure white marble with a single quartz and pyrite occlusion down the entire length. Gorgeous.

Fan of Agreeable Gray for common areas. We did the whole first floor in it in our current house. Definitely throw a sample on a couple different walls with different lighting conditions and/or furniture, it looks like a completely different color in our kitchen compared to the living room.

When we did out exterior we ended up landing on a color name I had never even thought existed because we wanted gray but with a hint of earthtone...

What we ended up doing was finding a literal paint color consultant here in town, paid her like $125 for a consult to come go over the house and recommend colors based on what we were asking for. We have a salmon/pinkish brick that we didn't want to paint, and this oddly fit perfectly with it.

Our "add pop to get attention" color for the door was Tardis Blue.

I'm not sure I'm ready for that much Greige. Do they have a Minor Greige or Greige Lite? Could you imagine working in this world daily and these bullshit names becoming your language? I told a painter we did Agreeable Gray and he just nodded and knew exactly what I was talking about.

So you just painted it the same color as the mortar?

Well I ended up getting all 4 samples from Byte Blue, Stream and had Rest Assured and Open Seas. Wife and I both like Stream. It has that quality where it is very bright in natural light, but looks dark and saturated in lower light conditions, which means it can be multifaceted in our common areas.

Byte Blue ended up being too pastel/baby blue where it felt like a pointless color. I thought I was going to like it more, but Stream actually changes shades and is much more interesting. We also have 'bronze' vinyl windows which is a mid-tone grey with a hint of green. Stream works much better with it. It also has a hint of grey-tones which brings it closer to slate, while still being undeniably a light blue rather than actual grey/greige.

We're also going with Whitetail for trim. A touch of warm will help blend warm and cool tones, and since we have natural red oak throughout the house it's important that I create a clean transition. I know idiots in home centers won't like it, but I've painted miniatures for years and my color theory is on point. Alone it's just white looking, but against a cool color it barely registers as antique white, which gives it a bit of class and ties into the floor and wood furniture. Extra white with the blue undertones just looks like garbage against deeper natural wood tones.

Anyway thems our picks I think. We'll do a full wall next and will decide on it then.

Sounds like you know what you're doing, but can't recommend this video enough - it was posted in this thread before. Followed his technique to a T and was really happy with the results and time savings.

Pretty decent quality and a definite step up from the 'contractor grade' cabinets they replaced.

Asked home depot for a rough estimate on cabinet installation, 20-30k. Lol, they told me my city (jewburb right outiside chicago) has a lot of requirements and theyll probably make me bring the electricity up to code. Told me Chicago is actually less restrictive.

Cabinets aren't that hard wtf. Especially if you can preplan and just buy premades and stack them as is without custom shit.
