Netflix adaptation syndrome just shows off how disingenuous the whole thing is.

Take a Japanese work, which by their rules is 100% diverse, set it in California with white actors, then take the most visually striking characters (usually redheads) and make them brown.

Like Death Note. Let's take the pale half English half Japanese guy with messy hair and sunken eyes, now he's a generic black guy.

HOW ABOUT A 100% ASIAN CAST!? WHAT THE FUCK.
It always blows my mind whenever I stumble across an errant comment where someone is positive about a Netflix adaption. Like, talk about a red flag that someone has the brain of a turnip.

I only had to watch a few clips on a video talking about the Cowboy Bebop show to know that it was an abomination in its own right even before squandering the anime.
I would be interested in a 100% black cast show about African mythology or an African great work of literature, woke people are signalling to me that those things don't exist which is a making me more racist.

No, it's been written.
Same here, although they'd probably turn around and pull a Black Panther and say nobody else is allowed to watch it. And even that sure lasted a good minute before it was back to diversity casting.

Again, that's why I think the powers that be don't push for those kinds of stories or else they would get Black Panther'd out of their own director's chair. Like Gravel said earlier, they're fine with replacing Asians, though.

Plotline leaked for the first 3 seasons.

Drakaris
Transformer sound
Damn, this just gave me flashbacks to the last seasons of GoT and I'm still sick of Drakaris. Now we're talking an entire show about batshit blondes and dragons who are going to be yelling their stupid catchphrase.
Isnt incest more vigorous during this time?
If my memory serves correctly, they make the Lannisters seem like amateurs. From a quick search, it looks like Daemon is both husband and uncle to Rhaenyra. Going off the photos, they definitely nailed a bit of an inbred look to the pair, so incest isn't too much of a surprise.

The black guy talks about his sea expertise, but we aren't shown that-- and we as the audience don't really feel a sense he's this big navigator or expert on it. We're offered no proof besides his exposition and talking about it at a table.

No other character corrobates anything about any of these characters backgrounds.

The Hightower family is allegedly a big deal.

Yet, we aren't shown any little scenes to back that up, or hint too much at that.
Show but don't tell is like movie making 101. It's sad as fuck that I understand that better than people literally making cinema. Want a guy to come off as a badass navigator, have him arriving at a port while all sorts of shit is going on and blow off the shock of others and act like it's routine. "Just a normal blow". When a character has to actually say who they are or what they do, it instantly ruins their credibility. They might as well run into the scene and karen the words "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM!!"

This is all especially true in a GoT series where Martin uses the lack of information dissemination for and against characters all the time. Someone saying something about themselves in Westeros is literally worth nothing without actions that prove it or corroboration from someone whose actions have granted their words weight.

Who knew that one of the unintended consequences of the internet age is that movie writers (and the public in general) have completely no idea how to put themselves in the place of someone in the past and critically think about what the lack of technology would mean to the people that lived in that time.

Because a lot of people don't have an inner monologue to think about that stuff. It's been removed by social conditioning and impulsive behavior.

There was an interesting lore nugget, Aegon had a vision of the upcoming Long Winter which was the real reason he invaded Westeros. He believed a Targaryen had to be on the throne to unite the kingdoms against the coming threat. This is a secret only passed from King to Heir.

As previously mentioned, the "book" this is based on is a "history" book written from the perspective of a citadel maester. Completely dry, fact based telling of the targaryan civil war.

I wanna say it was actually written by the couple that run grrms fan site and he gave it his seal of approval.

Either way there is zero dialogue in the books to borrow from, but beyond that there is no narrative, plot, character, etc to borrow from.

Its literally "sir bob of house bob, as tall as 7 chickens, fair skin and dirt colored hair. Died from a spear wound to the groin in the year 290 AL"

Not to rain on your parade but that except is from aegons conquest which iirc was a blurb written by grrm for his book "world of ice and fire" which is more of a geography book also written mainly by the couple that runs his fan site and rubber stamped by grrm.

Edit: actually they are all connected, fire and blood is just a collection of anthologies plus a bunch of shit that got cut out of world of ice and fire. Some written by grrm but 200 pages are cut from woiaf written by the fan site couple.

lol @ saying Daemon and Rhaenyra actors look inbred. They totally do, Daemon looks like the early transformation stage of gargoyle while his niece has an overbite for the ages. Its actually jarring when she opens her mouth. She mine as well not even have a set of bottom teeth.

They could absolutely be products of incest and eventually have an even more disfigured/retarded baby. You heard her mother talking about all of her miscarriages, she eventually died giving birth to another fucked up kid who didnt even survive. I doubt the show will go in that direction though.

edit: And there is something about the actor that plays the king that just doesnt feel convincing. The guy reminds me of an assistant manager at a manufacturing plant or something, not a Targaryen king.

wait until you see the nonbinary freakshow playing the older Rhaenera. It's actually mental because the younger actress is only 22 and the elder can't be much older.

That was the problem I had just looking at the previews. CGI means nothing if it is not supported by a good narrative using actual Stars. You can have new actors but the story has to be compelling and the actors have to have good direction.

Color means nothing if the dialogue and actors are shit. If the actors are drab, nobody will be interested to the degree that drew us in for the original. Having a Star means something. Just look at what Tom Cruise always seems to do. For colors sake I will mention Denzel Washington, Samual L. Jackson, or Morgan Freeman. These people are Stars.

We got a good veteran star to help support the new stars in season 1 of the original with Sean Bean as Edward Stark. This helped to transition the new actors as they settled into their roles. It also helped to start the viewership of the show as people were at least somewhat familiar with the actor and thus curious.

This show is using the name of the original and taking a serious risk given the blow back of a certain season 8. There are no familiar actors that interest me at all. The story must have been really good for the executives to sign off on it. I am curious only in that I want to know what the compelling story is that would bypass all other negatives to wanting to spend money for this show.
I prefer new actors. Movies these days are the same half dozen people over and over. Seems the only thing that changes are the movie titles.

Seems like this has been done before! I gave it 10 minutes and turned it off.

Guys talking at a table has no appeal, go figure.

There's no establishing scenes or hook in this show.

Its dry, dark, glib, and boring.

I have no problem with new actors. The original series introduced many new actors that ended up doing very well. However, it does help if you have a recognizable face that kind of connects the old with the new. I imagine there is also some advantage for the new actors if there are experienced actors to perhaps lend some knowledge in the craft. This current show has nobody I really am familiar with. Its just another reason for the show to not draw me in, right out of the gate.

I had to stop thinking about the show last night because I became legitimately angry at how flat the storytelling is and how local they made everything feel to King's Landing. A real rage event as I was going to bed.

These guys aren't D&D. Just a disclaimer if you try to bring up legitimate criticisms of this show you might get really mad. There's actually a DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM scene with the black guy he basically shouts exactly that. Wouldn't surprise me if GRRM as co-showrunner was incentivized to not spend budget so he can pocket it, and that's why we can't have any establishing scenes and the sets feel like King's Landing is 500 sqft. Well even the story feels like a 500sqft studio apartment, forget King's Landing.
