I guess they could continue it if they want to, but i am 99% sure the scope of the show is "The Dance of Dragons" (the Targ Civil war) + a little before and after, which is all contained in the first volume (its actually only the second half of the book).

The second volume is supposed to be from a little after that to the end of ASoIaF, I believe, which is why he cant finish it, cause he hasn't finished where the line of Aegon V and his son end up.

ok, so let me ask this. how many seasons do you think they could milk out of that part of Volume 1 while still being entertaining with interesting character twists??

My information is from a friend of mine who loved the books before it became pretty clear GRRM was never gonna finish them, but I would guess 3ish (and I believe the showrunners have stated their plans run for 3 or 4)

The first season is only 10 episodes, with some time skips, so I would guess

1. Set up the players
2. War
3. Climax of War and aftermath.

with the way HBO Discovery is currently being run, could just be

1, Set up players. 2. War and aftermath.

The last 2 seasons of GoT really incinerated any goodwill the show had, so even if this is good, I dont see it going longer than 3 or 4. They would be smart to tell a smaller story, that is done, and be done with it. If it's good and they want more, give the show runners another 2 or 3 seasons to tell a different story in the GoT World (Roberts Rebellion maybe?)

yeah, no shit. i will never again sign on for a TV show based on an incomplete story by anyone. especially not one written by an old man with writer's block.

GRRM signed like a $100m development deal with HBO last year and Steve Conrad has been quietly working on a Dunk & Egg show, along with other people for a Jon Snow sequel show and probably others. They aren't gonna talk about it until House of Dragon finishes season 1 and HBO decides if the IP is worth money (show drives a lot of subs) or if the IP is dead (nobody watches)

wonder what kind of numbers they are expecting. was looking at GoT the other day, S8 averaged something like 44m viewers (worldwide, all ways to watch over 7 days). during the same period, S1 was still averaging like 700k viewers.

Interested to see how they are going to limit the dragons plot-wise since it's featuring something like 40 to 100 dragons.

How they get those "wow dragons" scenes in there and still maintain realism and continuity with the plot.

I'm sure the dragons will conveniently not exist then exist suddenly throughout the show-- similar to capeshit writing and the X-men movies where superheros refuse to use their powers. Or there will be some type of plot device limiting the availability of them.
