I dont know bro, you tell me. I grew up in Detroit for the better part of my life and yet here I am. My father grew up in Detroit for most of his life and yet here he is and were both educated.
How many years ago? I think people are just deluding themselves by not recognizing how far shit has dropped off a cliff the past couple decades.

None of that is stuff we can really do though.

How do you change the culture to value education?
How do you hold schools accountable? I mean, you can't close down every single school and ship them to the better schools, then those schools get worse.
You have to fix the school before you can make it attractive enough to attract good teachers. Chicken and egg.

Maybe what you are saying is that there are all kinds of things you could do, just none of them are practical?
I think we can do these things and they can be practical, there just isn't the willpower to make it a priority. It's easier to pretend like we've divorced ourselves from the problem. Those problems are over there, I live over here, so they should fix that shit over there. But we know it doesn't work like that, the problems impact us all. i don't know how you change that dynamic, if I did I'd be doing it I guess. Personally I don't think it is something that we really do right now, the solution doesn't really exist so we can't really comprehend it. Nobody is working with families on a level like this to improve communities, no one has a roadmap.

As a parent who moved to get into a good school district, absolutely the difference is the kids in the classroom, not the teachers themselves or the facilities or whatever.
You keep telling yourself that it's just the people. They are simply self sabotaging and nothing else.

Yes, lots of people. Because they think the issue lies directly within skin color.
Actually no they don't. Also for the record my wife is black and my soon to be 3 children are half black. We are moving to a rental specifically because it's the best school district in the country. We are a bartender and a massage therapist. We are very low middle class. We are moving to provide our children with better opportunities. Nobody is stopping anyone from improving their lot. We have exactly equal opportunity. That is why you are wrong and race carding is bullshit.

Honestly I think this is the wrong question to ask mostly because it's so charged. You can't have honest conversations about this stuff because everyone is so buttmad about everything always. And dug in to whatever nonsense they happen to believe.

Better to just observe the problem as it is and work on ways out of it. Is there anyone who doesn't think we'd all be better off if Compton High was graduating capable people who were well integrated into society and competitive at the highest levels of academia?
To accomplish this I think you have to separate the kids from the parents. The parents are quite literally the problem. In a perfect world you'd have professional educators taking care of children even from a young age like its their job because it is their job. The family is secondary and there to provide what families are good at: providing love and personal attention. Families are traditionally very bad at ACTUALLY PARENTING.

I was waiting for us all to be called racists, thanks Khane for stepping up
Who did I call racist? He asked "Is there anyone" and I said "Yes, lots of people". Are you arguing there are no racists left in the world?

You don't have kids right? Have you ever even been inside an elementary school since the time you went to one?

Schools are actually more segregated now than they were in the 80s. We slipped backwards while nobody was paying attention.

Oh, you really do believe racism doesn't exist.

Even if it is the people, the people are the school. The school is just a building where they go and perform various rituals. This is true for all places, everywhere.

The local news channels here in St. Louis have done some pretty eye-opening episodes on the school that Michael Brown went to. They followed an "honors student" around for one day and basically nothing was happening in any of the person's classes. It wasn't a waste of time like I thought of high school, it was LITERALLY a waste of time. 3 study halls, a chemistry class where the teacher barely talked, one class with no teacher. The entire day, worthless. It was really just about keeping the students in this building for a day. Nothing was being taught.

The worst part to me is that this was an "honors" student, someone who had received high marks. They are going to graduate, get to college and just be completely unable to deal with it. Makes me despair, like I said. I just don't know what we can do about it.

You've been in every school in the country just because you have kids? Is that normally how parents do it? Did you specifically travel to run down areas to check out the schools and facilities even though you knew you'd never send your kids there?

So then it's only the people?

I'm enjoying just asking questions and watching people talk themselves in circles.

I have actually visited all of the good private schools in Dallas, 3 out of the 4 elementary schools in HPISD, the other 5 elementary schools in DISD I was considering before I moved, several high schools in the area just to get a feel. I moved specifically for schools, what the fuck man did you think I just looked online and said fuck it?

Keep in mind I haven't stated a single personal opinion, I've been asking you all questions, and because of those questions you've all decided what my opinion on the matter is. Putting some serious words in my mouth in fact.

There's someone else on this board who does that too.

I think he's trying to ask us if we think it's the students or the "school", the school being the building, faculty, administration, etc that make the school function.

Stop trolling dude. You aren't just "asking questions", you are asking loaded questions to get reactions. If you have some legitimate input, then please add to the discussion rather than complaining we are putting words in your mouth as you dart around playing games.

The questions aren't really loaded.

What do you think the problem is? The chicken or the egg? Most people can't answer that question, but in their own mind they sure as shit think they can.

And when you keep digging deeper the thought process unravels.
