My wife runs a data science/ML/AI department and said the industry scuttlebutt is that Altman was pushing to slow down, open up some of the data and tech, and work on security/safety concerns. The board told him to fuck off and want to monetize and scale everything fast and hard.
All of these scenarios seem fairly equally likely. Welcome to the future.

"According to reporting from Kara Swisher and The Information, it's looking like the ouster of Altman stemmed from an internal disagreement over the direction of the company with regard to a focus on profits over safety, with Chief Scientist Illya Sutskever apparently behind the board maneuvering. Altman's firing came as a complete surprise to Altman and Brockman, who were kept in the dark about the decision until Friday afternoon."

I wouldn't take anything at face value right now, Kara isn't as in-touch as she used to be either. A lot of bad takes coming out of Pivot lately.

Satya and Sam are playing some Cersei shit. This is CRAZY. Reports are saying Sam may come back with Satya's help and replace the board. This is the stuff of legends, all occuring over potentially the most powerful, resource-intensive technology ever made.

So we're going with "he's a Lex Luthor figure trying to become a deity with AI?" The 2020's are one crazy fucking decade.
lol I do not understand how humanity survives this decade. Once I get sick of this winter, I think I'm just gonna take my money to Vegas and chill there til it runs out.

They were founded as a non-profit. That their mission is such shouldn't be surprising. They converted to some weird "capped profit" structure before Microsoft injected them with cash.

The longer this plays out, the more it looks like this was the board attempting to stave off a hostile takeover by MSFT, and it looks like they're about to fail.

This should scare you, because it's true:

They know this product can never be profitable on its own. No amount of subscriptions and tokens will cover the cost of the thing they're intent on building.

It takes a cult to build a god.

The dude responsible for worldcoin was never going to be a good guy. That project is legitimately evil. I suspect everything else he does will be awful as well
