Supposedly our money supply is backed by the gold standard. If it was ever to get out that Ft. Knox is actually empty, it would cause a global monetary crisis in my opinion... out entire monetary supply is based off of a gold standard, and yet no one really knows if it exists or not.

We abandoned the gold standard in 1971.

That is definitely a positive start. My fear is the upcoming earnings season kicking off next week. We are likely to get a ton of pulled guidance. Aka more uncertainty.

All of that said, I am quite long on the markets already from the lows. Happy to sit and watch it chop S&P 5300 for a while and try to find a base. I really hope we aren't going to see lows again, as that is going to get a lot more panic and fear roiling markets.

While volatility is great as a day trader, this extreme range is exhausting. Seen a lot of dumb traders playing options without stops get absolutely blown the fuck up last week. Even crazier to me is people holding options overnight. The headline risk is insane. Getting trapped in options overnight (or a weekend like this) after a big headline hits and being stuck until market open is just unacceptable risk.

depends on the option ;)

Smartphones, computers and other electronic devices that won exemptions from some US tariffs will be part of a forthcoming levy on semiconductors, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, dampening what China had called a “small step” toward easing the trade fight between the world’s two biggest economies.

Lutnick, speaking Sunday on ABC’s This Week, signaled that the late Friday reprieve — exempting a range of electronics from 125% tariffs on China and a 10% flat rate around the globe — was temporary, and reiterated President Donald Trump’s longstanding plan to apply a different, specific levy to the sector.

“All those products are going to come under semiconductors, and they’re going to have a special focus-type of tariff to make sure that those products get reshored,” Lutnick said. “We can’t be relying on China for fundamental things that we need.”

His comments indicate that the exemptions, published in a US Customs and Border Protection document late Friday, were made to shift those products ultimately to a different levy, which Trump has long threatened for semiconductors, and not to indefinitely claw back the scope of Trump’s tariffs.

You guys are still operating under the assumption that he gives a shit about what the stock market does. He has stated several times he does not. A bull market isn't the objective here.

That's fair.

But it's getting to the point where not having a clear message looks incompetent. Which in turn pisses off the citizens who now have their retirements on a rollercoaster and are getting fucked.

The midterm season isn't that far away.

Keep culling the weak and bringing them under the banner and only then does he face off against China and the EU.

If you're negotiating deals with adversarial polities the last thing you want to do is announce your tactics. If I were Trump I would be playing my cards extremely close to my chest.

It's going to mean short terms pain and sacrifice (he's acknowledged as much), with the long term goal of making a sick patient (the US economy) better. Those are his words, not mine.

I personally don't think Trump is thinking about a 2 year horizon, I think he is operating under the assumption he has at least 4 years.

China will smoke the US, because they aren't afraid to sacrifice hundreds of millions of lives if necessary. The US has lost its nuts because it's filled with foreigners with no ties/concern with its success and China did the smart thing and built a "food" ally in Brazil.

I still hope Trump goes all-in on this trade war, but the US public absolutely does not have the willpower to do whatever it takes like China's does.
