Oh god, stop reading that Variety article before you get to the part where they start talking about video games... they are so out of touch and old it's cringe worthy.

<old man voice>

One of these days the video game industry will make a game that isn't about shooting and guns and violence, one day even women will play video games

It's always going to be an estimate. It's an international industry, and reporting of revenues isn't going to be above board or comparable from place to place.

Given the tedious artistic and coding tasks of creating a MMO world, it may be a while before we see groups of niche games coming out.

Of course products like eq landscape or whatever it's called should increase the creative demand of the mmo community.

In the future I wouldn't be surprised to see prototyped software available for purchase by the avg Joe to allow a group of nerds to create any game they want. Im no lvl 60 geek and dont understand what could be marketed and what couldnt, but the money to be made with licensing fees and what not could make selling starter creator sets for 300 bucks or so very profitable

I didn't read any of this but I'll bet there was talk of devs not realizing MMOs need to require interaction and build communities and basically remake EQ1. Not just remake EQ1 technology and gameplay wise, but buy a time machine and send everyone who played it back to 1999 so that they could play it. No wait, they'll also have to erase our memories of EQ because then it wouldn't seem new and awe inspiring. That is what will bring the MMO back! At least... for all 10 of FoH's most vocal EQ dick jerkers.

From what I saw with that voxel engine dudes site, I think the content generation is getting way easier. The guy was creating shit on the fly with the ease of just playing the game it seemed like. He was even procedurally making castles, with all the interior corridors and shit on the fly. Now I dont know what the back end of that is and how labor intensve it is but if they are releasing a game where we as players can just modify the game world on the fly I think the future is already there.

Yea, but that's like box sales. Everyone gets a huge wave of interest in the first month and then it evaporates until the next big release. I'm certain the peak has been reached, and it'll have standard traffic levels in another month.

I think you only get bullet points unless you buy access to the details. And apparently F2P revenue is increasing at over twice the rate of subscription revenue.
I find numbers from that link interesting. They show average player spending around $20 a months on MMO's but then we have allot of MMOGRPG game companies clearly modeling prices based upon a much higher revenue extraction per player rate. It seems many companies are chasing the few big spender instead of the mass market.

Yea, I was speculating on that before I even googled this stuff. Using whales to prop up your entire business isn't that rare.

(mmo)RPGMAKER LXXVI coming to save the world in 2022?
I wish. If I could make my own MMO (even with the shit graphics of EQ now) I would try my hardest to do it. Sadly, I'm too lazy to learn how to code so I'll continue waiting for my ez-mode MMO creator.
