Let me know when you are done talk about things you don't know.

When you have done a EDKII/UDK/Tianocore package, build wrapped inside your existing UEFI Modules, with .cif, .inf, and .dec files created to properly link all libraries and binaries, reading from multiple PCI Config spaces, then you can come and talk about how easy or hard it is.

Feel free to google those so you know what we are talking about.
Come back when you work on a Platform. Sometimes want to punch myself in the face when I am pulled into a customer issue which is due to their code implemented on top of the platform.

You need to build the box first so you have the capital to work on the platform.... later.

Behind the Scenes with SimpliVity and Silicon Valley

I actually turned down an offer to work at Simplivity a few years ago. Would have went there had I decided that West-borough wasn't on the other fucking side of the world from where I wanted to live in the Boston area.

The most amusing thing is Simplivity is not a Silicon Valley company. They are based out of Westbourgh, MA (previously Israel). There is a huge cultural difference between the two areas as far as how companies are run.

I was reading somewhere a few years back that if you're comptent and willing to work in those languages you can somewhat easily find work making 180k+ since it is so specialized and no one wants to support these systems but so many businesses have critical layers that operate on old ass software.

In a similar way I'm back on the fucking search engine here. I've already spread my resume out to a few places. I'm getting sick of supporting this bullshit.

Shit, this stuff is so old the systems that run it couldn't possibly be that complicated. Easy money?

I'm holding out hope that one day knowing assembly is gonna pay off big.

Minor rant of the day I guess. I have a one on one (I hate these) with my boss every couple weeks. He wanted us to start tracking work with Jira so any time a bug/request/feature needs to be added i create an issue in Jira and assign it to myself. He said he was looking today and I'm at like 25% of all open tasks and our team is like 10 people. I told him I wanted to track everything because I feel like I'm drowning a bit here. He agreed, and by drowning I just mean I have way too many things on my plate.

After the meeting he came over with an urgent sev1 issue and I was just like

I can't get anything done here.

Edit: Emc had/has a business unit called disk library for mainframe whose entire purpose is to interface and trick tape systems into thinking it's a tape system and storing everything digitally. The legacy stuff is crazy.

Anybody know COBOL or FORTRAN? Looks like the government needs you.

US nuke arsenal run by 1970s IBM 'puter using 8-inch floppies ??? The Register
I do Cobol everyday, starting to get into HLASM. I mean I wish I saw them espousing some list of job offers, because the only ones I ever see are asshole head hunters trying to pay us whatever they can get away scamming the H1B1 Visas. My boss is currently looking for a job but the only abundance of opportunity he can find is in Texas.

Man 180K, I haven't seen that, a year ago I saw a job in Ny, NY for a Cobol position for 100K starting, but that means an hour commute each way, and cost of living in any part of the area is much greater than Upstate.

We have warehouse clients that run their warehouses on Informix 4gl software on OpenVMS. They still run some of them on VAX's I think. Can you imagine who knows how to work with that shit? Some fucking neckbeard in overalls and a ponytail, no doubt.

I'm not familiar with LinkedIn etiquette. What is the best way of contacting a recruiter for a company? Just connect to them because they're recruiters and they expect it or do I have to upgrade to premium to send them mail?

I've never heard of someone directly contacting a recruiter via linkedin. Do you know anyone at the company you are looking at? I'd reach out them instead.

If it's Amazon, Microsoft or Facebook chances are they would have contacted you if they were interested in your LinkedIn profile already.

It isn't but the Glassdoor for the company said they're notoriously slow with contacting applicants. I was just wondering if I could expedite the process if I got into contact. But if it completely breaks protocol I obviously will just wait and see. Not like I'm desperate to move on.

I've contacted a recruiter via LinkedIn before. I only did it once but they got back to me right away and set up an interview. I can't imagine anyone thinking there was some weird protocol about not using a social networking site, which is built around making contacts, to actually get into contact with someone.

I ask because I literally just made a LinkedIn profile. Then I went to add the recruiter and selected "I don't know this person" and I got a little pop-up from LinkedIn saying "Yo. You should only add people you know. We take rando connection invites seriously." so I backed out and decided to defer to someone who may have more experience.

I was referring more to someone reacting to a connection request as though it's breaking some unspoken rule rather than you just not being sure if there is an etiquette. I can't imagine you getting blacklisted or anything like that simply because you requested someone as a contact. That would be really strange and a good sign that person probably isn't worth working with.

You can just create your online profile in indeed.com / monster.com / linkedin and recruiters will contact you.
Your name will appear on their searches.

Updated / fluffed resume is all you need in order to create your own email trash rule of recruiters
