You'd use notepad++ over something like eclipse?

At least use visual studio code - it's just an editor minus all the overhead of visual studio
I use Notepad++ for general text editing, I just know it can do some basic syntax highlighting too. Mostly a joke, I'm not going to code in Notepad++. There ARE some people in my company that do, and I give him shit for it constantly. Fucking product went out the door with a bug in it because he forgot to import a python module. Any IDE would have yelled at him for that.

Instead, nope, he wants to switch all our Python code to Java so compiling can catch his errors

Thanks for the visual studio code suggestion, I didn't know that existed.

There was also another editor I used that was lightweight - Atom maybe? Something like that

Atom

Edit: I mostly like atom and visual studio because you can set them to dark mode and I prefer the dark backgrounds and light fonts to the opposite.

The editor I have to use for UEFI BIOS is all white and I hate it.

When I was in college I had to code on a VAX using vi in a literal 80 character greenscreen terminal.

You kids these days and your fancy IDE's.

They forced us to use this in High School to learn the pain of older generations.

Oh god, that too. Everybody adheres to 80 character width
here. But when it makes your comments, not to mention
your code look fucking stupid, what's the point? They type
out function calls like this, wasting huge amounts of
horizontal whitespace:

r = subprocess.call(['ls',
'-l',
'*.txt'
],
STDOUT.PIPE,
STDERR.PIPE
)

How is that easier to read?

EDIT: vbulletin won't even let me express they shittiness
of that function call properly. It's eating all the whitespaces
on the parameters.

That's fine. Note, I specifically picked an example where the parameters were short and the human eye could read them all easily in one line. Your example is long and could easily go over 120 characters if the entire call was indented a few times.

Also notice the asinine part of not only breaking up the parameters to the function, but also the list. Thus, whoever's reading the code has only one space differentiate between list element and function parameter.

Oh, just came across this one:

Do work with a company that still programs it's CNC plasma plate cutter (8'x40') and it's beamline (roller system with punches that will roll up to 36" deep beam down it and punch the holes in the web and both flanges via numeric control) with a punchcard system.

Oddly enough the people that dick with that stuff get paid pretty well. Cheaper to pay the guy to keep it running than to replace it, especially the custom made stuff like a plate seamer that will auto seam via submerged arc welding 8' plates 40' long into a 40' x 40' plate via..you guessed it punchcard.

None of that stuff made in the US anymore. One place imported a plate burner from Turkey. Good portion of the specs call for using only US made machines to burn, seam, roll, and weld and those are drying up.

It's the same reason Tape storage is still a thing.

Sure, there are virtual tape emulators, but those are expensive as fuck and I feel like just a bandaid to transition to digital storage.

Is there a better method for cold storage yet then tape?

Blu-rays? I don't really know.

I know with VTEs (Virtual Tape Emulator) they just use mechanical or solid state drives and use the VTE to trick the mainframe into thinking they're adding more tape storage.

I assume the tape market is just going to die off relatively soon.

Hey Tenks, I've been hanging out with Bliz people alot lately, and their company really sounds good. I'd ordinarily never work at a big place for several reasons (politics, dead weight, brutal crunches, post launch team slaughter etc), but it sounds like bliz doesn't really have any of the usual big company problems.

They are also cool about side projects, which is almost unheard of for a large shop. I'm still probably way too introvert but if I had to go back to working at a studio again I'd sure consider them. Good luck!
