Some of the shit shows included pointer usage. I get that pointers are confusing when you start going double or triple pointers, but they're doing shit like throwing random * and & around hoping something works. You know .. shit you did when you were first learning them. I'm not even sure they teach pointers at this point.

I've probably only used pointers a handful of times in my professional career (lots when I was self teaching C++). I graduated collage in 2007 and I only had a couple of class that were C based, even back then everything was mostly Java.

Lmao that’s scary. At least they can understand pointers in c. My new hires can’t understand writing a junit test in java

My career is in games and using Unity specifically. So pretty much only C# unless there is a native extension (hence my handful of times using C++) to do some specific functionality. Backends have always been some kind of managed language like C#/Java/JavaScript via Node.js. Knowing about actual memory management is becoming a niche thing.

Yeah and to be fair we hire mostly computer engineers as opposed to CS Grads.
I see this in my field too. There is a major difference between an engineer and somebody who only learned Unity to make games. I always go for the actual engineer and teach them what they don't know about Unity. Way easier than teaching a Unity guy about non shitty programming.

Idk what point youre trying to make. C is still used quite a bit in embedded among other places. Did you have a bad experience with pointers that gave you PTSD or something? Sounds like you have a very narrow focus of the software world.

No point other than agreeing that finding people with experience with memory management is becoming harder and harder because it isn't really taught in school and lots of fields use languages that never have to worry about memory management so it further reduces the pool of people that have experience with it. Sorry to break into your pity party of shitting on people.

Kind of sounds like you have a very narrow focus of the software world that what you do represents what most people do.

Pretty silly to argue with the FoH mascot.

Foler thinks everyone still gets taught assembly and will make 500k easy when they graduate.

Well, he doesn't actually think that. He wants everyone to think he's ultra successful and smart so he's trying real hard.

Fair enough. They’re teaching all the kids python now for CS. I’ll agree to that. Unless you comp Eng or EE where you’ll touch more embedded. Calm your tits son. We’re all Pals here.

nah. I do remember learning assembly in undergrad. Oof. Worked in the C world for 4 years and now Java. Couldn’t be happier.

I did java for two years and wanted to kill myself.

I do some assembly but it's mostly for source level debugging.

There's definitely a push to replace C with Rust but it's gonna be a loooong time for people to accept it. C has its problems but it's got quite the track record

I got into the field officially in 95. There were no Poos or Furries in the field back then. And anyone into Anime kept it a secret as if it meant they were inbred. I was tubby, but I wore a tie every day and had hair like Greg Alman back then initially, before cutting it short for a gig at a nuke plant during y2k. The Poo and Fag invasion started after the dot com bubble, along with the dress code sliding. At that point, the chart becomes accurate.

Well boys. I finally got the promotion I'd been asking for. I do get the scope of tasks I wanted but not the title. Not that I was ever big into titles but I feel like titles do matter to some degree. As opposed to getting an architect tile I get an architect role and I am simply a Staff Engineer which is our level above Senior.
