looking at getting the 2013 Razer ($1799) to upgrade my M11x it just doesn't have the power to play anything anymore. my question is the difference in the 2014 razer and the 2013 ? All i can tell between the two is the higher resolution screen and the different Nvidia card. Is there much difference between those cards? the price difference on the 2 models is nearly $500 so i would love to go with the 2013.

Popular opinion seems to be that the Razer 2013's screen is shit compared to the 2014. The 870M is a large enough upgrade over the 765M that those two things would justify the $500 increase in my mind -- although you can likely do a lot better for that price anyway by going with another brand of laptop (see above).

Just got my Razer 2014 and it is amazing.

Probably something you missed about the screen also is that the new 2014 one is touchscreen as well.

The laptop is overkill but I love it so far, so light, so sexy, and so powerful.

after pouring over laptops for the last few days i looked at the Lenovo Y50, alienware14, the upcoming Asus G50 (ithink?) and the Aorus i settled on the Razer 2014 (256ssd). i did miss that the 2014 was touch screen and it seems the 870 is a pretty big upgrade from the benchmark scores i looked at. It should arrive at home tomorrow then i have to wait a week for it to arrive out here in the Middle East, I'll post a review after i clock some hours on it.

What's everyones opinion on HP Chromebook 14 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER)

I'm looking for a new portable laptop. All I need it for is college stuff, surfing and streaming. I plan on using my external hard drive as well (if that is possible on chromebooks). Just looking for something inexpensive and fast that can handle what I need. I'm more keen on the 14in than the 11in.

EDIT: Read on page 25 Chromebook sounds like what I need. Is the HP 14in worth the 50$+ compared to the 11in? Bah, just read up on Samsung's Chromebook, has 4gb Ram...Not sure now.

For comparison:

Yes, yes, a million times yes. 11" is a joke, 14" is what you want and for $50 more it shouldn't even be a question.

If you are only going to do bullshit like surf and stream why not just get a tablet? If you are going to do any actual real work don't get a chromebook.

If you see yourself ever wanting to do anything other than use Chrome and play a (somewhat adequate, but still restricted) subset of media files, don't buy anything that only runs Chromium. I have a ChromeBox sitting in the corner collecting dust because I can't make it do some of what I'd need it to do without spending way too much time trying to make ChrUbuntu work properly.

Well I just have college stuff. Papers, research, porn. I'm always watching slickdeals tablets on sale, but chromebook seems cheaper for what I need.

But again, I don't mind waiting for the holidays.

If that's all you're doing, and you're content with being very limited, the price is reasonable. But, as was pointed out above, you want the 14" for sure.

I honestly don't know jack about tablets. From people on slickdeals, most people are fans of the Dell Venue. Maybe I'll wait it out til a decent tablet is on sale.

It sounds like the Asus transformer book might be an option. A friend of mine just got one a few weeks ago and is pretty happy with it. It's not terribly powerful but you do get full windows 8.1 and the included keyboard is decent. It's only $350 or so.

I picked up theAcer C720 Chromebooka couple weeks ago and really love it. $200, actually gets the 8hrs of battery life advertised, and I got used to 11.6'' very quickly. For things like browsing the web, editing documents/spreadsheets (Google Drive), emailing, and the occasional video, this is perfect. For other things I have my desktop with dual-monitor setup... but on the go, small and lightweight with long battery life is the win. If I actually need to do something more while I'm away, I can always remote into my desktop.

For what it's worth, I also have a Mac Air 2012, but the battery lasts at most 2hrs these days. Really not sure what advantage it gives me compared to the Chromebook & Chrome Remote Desktop, though.

edit: I also have a Nexus 10 that I use all the time, but I don't see it as a replacement for a Chromebook.

so my laptop finally arrived at home (Maryland) and my wife did a boot test to make sure everything loaded correctly and then sent it to me in the desert...after 17 days it appears to have been "lost" in shipping. i have a tracking update saying it left the US on the 5th, all other mail (things from Amazon) and care packages tend to arrive in 7-9 days. Due to it being an APO address i cant file for the insurance for 45 days and it could be 180 days until they issue a refund.

Really hoping this $2200 laptop shows up and was just delayed somewhere because i sincerely doubt the USPS will be very easy to deal with.

Some asshole postal worker is having a few hundred beer on you right now, dude.

But seriously, hope it arrives soon. That's just shitty.

What's an ok -$300 laptop? Mom wants one and she just uses it for internet browsing (basic), emails, and word processing.
