I feel like I scumbagged your guys spot because I probably wouldn't have entered it unless I'd heard about it in this thread. Still it was 782 teams signed up and only 128 taken so it was all just dumb luck. Recap in spoiler that most won't care about:

Our team:

Rumble top
Amumu jungle
Diana mid
Ezrael adc
Thresh support (me)

Their team:

Ryze top
Malphite jungle
Kassadin mid
Miss Fortune adc
Zyra support

There were interesting targeted bans as you get the account names of the opposing team beforehand. Both sides banned the most played and highest win rate enemy champs which left most of the low ELO perma-bans open which weren't really picked. We actually counted on them doing targeted bans since we were blue side with first pick to allow us to run an Amumu jungle and it worked. We generally run on a teamfighting strat with lots of AE ults and CC preferred so Amumu works perfectly in it. We normally run Rumble, Jarvan, Lux/Kennen, Miss Fortune, and Sona as our go-to. They had banned out Jarvan, Kennen, Sona and got an early pick on Miss Fortune but we have a diverse champion pool so it wasn't an issue. We chose Diana even without an AE ult or CC just to put a hurt on Kassadin which ended up being a good call.

Early game was pretty eventful and ultimately probably decided the match. With Amumu's blue dependency we expected an invade so invaded their blue. Since we were blue side if they invaded our blue then their bottom lane is far behind getting back to lane. Worked out beautifully. When they weren't at their blue our top recalled and we took their side giving our bot lane a full level advantage by the time they got back in lane. We ended up losing a pretty early first blood in top lane though due to their pressure up there from the blue invade. Highlight of the game was in laning phase when a level 6 Thresh initiate in bot ended in a double kill followed by Diana calling for the unused Ezrael ult toward mid who was being ganked with Malphite/Kassadin. Ended with a beautiful Ezrael ult snipe onto Malphite for an Ezrael triple kill which also allowed Diana to finish off Kassadin. A few minutes later we also executed a very nice 4 man bot gank facilitated by a dragon area pink ward and a Diana teleport. Amumu came from their jungle and initiated from behind them under their tower with an ult and the other 3 of us followed up from lane for another 2 kills that allowed us to finish bot tower and get dragon after. At the end of the early game we wound up ahead 10-4 in kills with an overall CS advantage, an early dragon, and a 2 tower lead.

Mid game we started to throw as we got aced twice but it was always in all-in teamfights and they only walked away with 1 left alive so couldn't capitalize on objectives afterwards. Late game our teamfights got back into gear and we just shut them down then finished their base. 39 minute game.

Our team's fairly nooby (mostly low silver solo/duo queue). We've done lots of ranked queuing as the weekend warriors we are but it was fun to actually get in a tournament where the stakes feel even that much higher. We were all pumped on adrenaline and it was such a fun experience. Can't wait for the next round.

That's pretty awesome, good luck with the rest of the tournament!

If you can post the time of the next one so we can spectate if possible. Always fun to cheer for a local team!

Grats dude! I agree with Spawn, you should let us know when the next match is at, even though I have no clue who you are, it'd still be fun to watch. Or, have somebody stream? Or upload the matches to youtube? Or....

Picking Diana into Kass is a great call as she pretty much wrecks him pre and post 6. Amumu + Rumble is still plenty of AoE Damage so that's a good combo as well. The enemy team makes me scratch my head a bit. I know Ryze top has been getting more attention but to throw a malphite in the jungle seems weird. At that point you'd think they would just Malphite top and pick a better jungler. I'm also not a huge fan of Zyra pick supporting MF. I like Zyra as a support, but I think there are better choices to pair with MF.

How exactly did the picks go, if you remember? To me that is one of the most interesting parts.

We banned Katarina, Hecarim, Shen. They banned Jarvan, Kennen, Sona. Talking to them after the game they said they were all laughing when we instabanned Kat first pick as their mid played almost nothing else. He had like 50 ranked games on Kat and his next mid was 3 games on Kassadin. Then on top of our Diana counter-pick it was gg for mid. I think their Kassadin had something like 12 CS at level 6. When mid game came around most were in the low hundreds and he was at 60-70. He still was able to put out some damage in teamfights but was just heavily crippled. Rest of picking was:

Blue: Amumu
Purple: Miss Fortune, Malphite
Blue: Ezrael, Thresh
Purple: Zyra, Kassadin
Blue: Diana, Rumble
Purple: Ryze

I think the MF pick was just another way of denying us what they saw as our strong champs although their ADC has played more MF than others and their support has played more Zyra than others so maybe comfort picks as well. I think the strongest synergy between them is the ability to lock the enemy team into Bullet Time but with the delay on Zyra's ult it's much harder to execute properly than someone like a Sona or Amumu. They might have also been cringing at the thought of our "Curse of the Sad Bullet Time" after we first picked Amumu. Lots of reasons they might have picked that combo but it definitely didn't do them any favors when they got into lane a level late from their invade.

I understand why Ryze top works as he is toward the bruiser side of an APC and am guessing it was mostly a comfort pick. Their top normally plays Jax/Jayce so maybe he didn't feel comfortable against a Rumble even though I'd probably say that match up would have been in their favor. They might have also wanted a stronger AE for teamfights as they did have lots of AE already and Ryze can really pump some damage on an enemy team with his ult. And yeah I've never liked Malphite in the jungle so was glad to see them take him. He doesn't have an amazing clear time, has pretty bad pre-6 ganks, and even once he does hit 6 he can only gank well because of his long cooldown ult. He mostly just sticks in the jungle and farms to become the regular teamfight tank/initiate. Meh.

As far as spectating, custom games only allow 2 spectators and with 2 teams it kind of makes sense that each team gets 1 spot. If someone has a twitch or some other stream set up I can PM the details and they can stream the spectate. That way you get the roaming action camera instead of just locked onto 1 view if we stream it ourselves. The next round is from 6/10-6/17 and we'll probably try to schedule it for the weekend of the 14th-16th. Will let you guys know when we settle on a time to play them but we won't even get our next match-up until round 1 ends on the 8th.

Well, people can still spectate you without being in the actual game as a spectator. They just have to be on your friends list while you're playing the game.

Shit Other Games moves fast.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying maining a support and I've been messing around with Thresh with a perma ADC that I play with. I want to expand my repertoire to other supports and if I'm going to spend some dollars on a champ, I want to get some decent ones.

So, what is the current ranking for supports? I'm looking at Janna and Sona, but I understand Sona's heal is getting nerfed? Janna is all about shielding and CC? What about Nami (currently free so tried her real quick last night, but she's awful in solo queue as most supports are, but I'll try tonight)?

There's some random blog that tiers out champs in the current meta, but I have no idea if the site is legit. I also understand it really depends on who you're playing with and at what level, but I'm getting a general idea here. I don't care about difficulty or cost so I'm curious what people think.

Despite being ridiculously ahead last night I lost a game because three people on my team kept arguing constantly, costung us the game. Le sigh, back to Silver III for me. Though I will say my play the last week hasn't been too great due to being tired so I suppose I deserve it.

Thresh is pretty amazing support, but a high skill level. not only of the person playing thresh, but rest of the team. you'd be surprised how many don't grab the lantern when they should. his hooks are harder to hit than blitz's, but he locks someone down longer when they land. both he and blitz really force the other team to change their playstyle

nami has a ton of cc, as does janna. both do well there.

sona can burn mana quick but can harasses realy well and a good ult can win the game. expecially when paired w/ MF.

Lulu and Leona are the 2 other supports that are pretty common and work well

Nidalee and Lux sometimes support, but I really don't think they do well. I've seen a teemo support that was just mind blowing. his blinding shot just shot down the enemy AD and he had so many shrooms on the map it was almost like we had some sort of hack running. you can also go w/ a bruiser or ap carry to harass the enemy team and still let the AD carry.

I've gotten pretty good at Thresh, but I sitll need a ton of practice on landing the hook and leading my targets. I just want to start practicing with some other Champs right now. I'm leaning towards Sona atm.

Sona is op, and it shows in the win rate. Janna is also pretty high, and then I think it evens out from there.

Janna and Leona are my two favorite supports. Janna just has such a fun playstyle and if you get some CDR on her it helps so much. If I get a little bit of a lead in my lane I'll pick up an early kages, which will eventually turn into Morellos. If the game goes long enough I get CDR boots. That allows you almost max CDR plus some AP from Morellos which allows you to be such a boss.

Leona is my favorite champion if you have an adc that likes to go aggressive. MF, Draven, Graves. Even Cait can do well (Leona EQ into Cait trap = GG). Being able to initiate well, especially if you believe you are better then your team, means you can control when and where fights happen. Leona Ult has a huge range, then following up with E-Q is insane. That or just sitting back and peeling for your ADC assuming you have another person that can engage is great. E is a mini-root. Q stuns and you can Ult to stun/slow as well, so your peel is pretty amazing.

Thresh is pretty broken right now though.

Sona is a giant lane bully too, her poke and sustain in lane is amazing. Plus her Ult is game changing assuming you can actually land it.

Lulu can be a huge presence in lane and can turn just about any fight. Probably my favorite support.

Janna has a really fun play style and can peel/disengage really well.

Sona is just broken IMO. But she is getting nerfed, so I don't know if you want to invest in her.

I heart about the nerf, but apparently it weakens her power early game, but they boosted her armor. Her late game supposedly doesn't change much.

her early game is why she is so good right now... she really lets a bot lane pull ahead and snowball and keep them zoned off of creeps.

Her late game is press 'R' win game, so no I wouldn't imagine any change to her numbers would effect that much.

I didn't realize she was OP again though, when did that happen?

Nami is also a really strong support since her last round of buffs(and likely was very strong before then). I'd suggest Janna, Sona, Nami, Thresh, and Zyra for supports worth really focusing on at this point. I'm not too big on Lulu anymore, but she's likely still very good as well. It really depends on your team/lane setup.

I love Janna, she has a decent skill cap too, not as high as thresh, but knowing when & how to use Janna Ult and her Tornado are key. A great janna can make some amazing plays. Also her passive movement for the entire group is OP.

Sona is good but I just suck with her and she seems kinda boring to play tbh. She lacks the play making ability that a Janna/Leona/Thresh can pull off. Sona's ult is key and that's about it.

Taric was nerfed but still decent and I always enjoy playing Alistar... Tons of CC and able to make some good plays with headbutt, also has great peeling ability due to headbutt. I always feel like I'm a football linebacker when playing alistar, keeping the foes off my adc.
