Hey guys for someone who is starting to play LoL any suggestions on what champions to use. I been playing for less than a week. I been using Garen but I would like to try other ones. Co-worker gave me a $10.00 Riot point card and I was wondering which heroes should I buy with it.
Nobody can clearly say which champions you should use because everybody has a different playstyle. Champions tend to fit into a few categories:

Tank:Hard to kill, initiates fights, peels targets off squishy allies, dives the enemy squishy targets, usually has forms of sustain and high mobility. Sustained damage is okay, usually can't poke and normally has low burst. Usually has a form of crowd control.

Assassin:Squishy with high mobility and high burst. Normally has low sustained damage usually due to cooldowns on skills. Great for catching out players and killing them quickly. May find team fights more challenging because if you are focused you'll die quickly. Often have to wait for a tank to initiate and for enemy to blow a lot of their cooldowns (ults & other key abilities that would f' you up). Assassins lack Crowd control abilities.

Ranged Attack Damage Carry (ADC):An auto-attacker specializing in physical damage. Very squishy but also has the highest sustained damage in the game once fed. ADCs can have good mobility and great sustain due to lifesteal. You rely less on abilities and more on auto-attacks. ADCs need to stay in the backline and attack closest priority targets. ADCs can't dive into the battles without assistance from a support or tank. ADCs lack crowd control abilities and can be burst down quickly.

Ability Power (AP):APs specialize in magic damage and often have great crowd control abilities. APs don't rely on auto attacks, the key is to disable your target with whatever CC you are equipped with then burst the target down quickly while they are under the CC affects. APs typically have great mobility but often lack sustain. After the initiation of a fight by a tank, APs often dive priority targets such as the enemy ADC or AP. Due to high mobility they can usually perform their quick burst then escape the fray quickly.

Bruiser:A bruiser is normally a melee champion with low poke and low sustain but has decent burst damage and high sustained damage. Bruisers also have some form of crowd control and mobility. A bruiser is not as squishy as an AP Carry or ADC but if focused they will still die quickly.

These are really the 5 main archetypes imo. From there you have 5 "roles". Jungler, Top Lane, Mid Lane, ADC, Support. (ADC is a role & an archetype). ADC is that special case where they are pretty much locked in to being bottom lane since that's the meta.

Any of the other archetypes could fill any of the other rolls. Examples:

Junglers:
Assassin Junglers: Kha Zix, Diana, Zed
Tank Junglers: Nautilus, Volibear, Nasus, Amumu, Hecarim, Jarvan IV
Bruiser Junglers: Darius, Nocturne, Riven, Jax, Lee Sin, Xin Zhao
AP Junglers: Karthus, Nunu, Diana

Top Laners:
Assassin Top Laners: Kha Zix, Zed, Akali
Tank Top Laners: Malphite, Nasus, Volibear, Renekton, Singed, Jarvan IV
Bruiser Top Laners: Darius, Riven, Jax, Zac, Irelia
AP Top Laners: Elise, Vladimir, Kennen

Mid Laners:
Assassin Mid Laners: Kha Zix, Zed, Akali, Katarina, Talon, Diana
Tank Mid Laners: *niche pick, tanks often don't play mid*
Bruiser Mid Laners: Lee Sin, Pantheon
AP Mid Laners: *just about every AP champion* Twisted Fate, Karthus, Kassadin, Lux

Support:
Assassin Supports: *niche pick, assassins suck as support*
Tank Supports: Nautilus, Volibear, Blitzcrank, Taric, Thresh, Leona
Bruiser Supports: *niche pick, bruisers mostly suck as support, though sometimes you'll see a Pantheon or Wukong *
AP Supports: Janna, Sona, Soraka, Lulu, Nami, Zyra, Elise

If you are looking for an assassin mid with a lower learning curve I suggest picking up Kha'zix(he has an escape with a refresh, good burst, etc). Zed and Diana are both fairly invested in their all in and would be a lot less forgiving than Kha'zix.

I'd say play some more to learn a little more on some champs you think you'd like and wait for them to be on sale. For 1300 RP you can get 2-3 of the more expensive champs. On easy to learn for each role, strong in the role, and cheap IP I'd say Garen and Singed top, Ryze mid, Taric support, Tristana ADC, Cho'gath/Amumu/Nunu jungle. Most of the good jungles and ADC's are expensive IP wise but for ease to learn I'd suggest Caitlyn ADC for easiest to learn and most forgiving of mistakes. In jungle Volibear or Xin Zhao are both pretty straightforward with their abilities and strong in the role.

and then I'll queue as support to get games faster and still pick middle because I'm first pick. There would be so many problems with a position queue finder.
Them adopting their current stance of pick order > call order is because that's the only two options, both of which suck, but pick order is the lesser of two evils. If you had a queue finder, you'd also have something denoting the role you queued for in champion select. If you pick multiple roles you can play, the system would assign you one of those roles based on who it matches you with (if you select jungle and mid, and the queue needs a jungler to put you in a match, it would say you got queued for jungle). It would match up 5 people that picked different roles and show what they queued for, if you go against that without agreement from your team (like someone gets counter picked and you both agree to switch roles) you could be reported. Just like trying to go against pick order now.

No, it's not a perfect system that will deal with every asshole/troll under the sun, nothing ever will be. But, it's a heck of a lot better then the current (non-existent) system. I fail to see how a queue system creates more problems then it solves versus the current free for all we have.

There's tons of games I get into where 3 people all want to play ADC, or two people want support, two want top and no one wants jungle. A queue system would alleviate most of those type of games. If you can't play a certain role, you queue up for all the others. If you ONLY want to play top, you only queue for top. If you don't care, you pick all 5 and let the system get you a game immediately and tell you what you need to play based on the rest of your team's desires.

It's never going to be a perfect thing but I am glad to see them taking a stance on it. I look forward to what Lyte and his team can come up with to "alleviate" the issue as all of their projects thus far have been phenomenal.

I don't know why they don't implement a queue system where you specify the role you want before queueing. Supports would probably get instant games, mid players would have to wait longer. But, that's a fair enough trade off and might force more people to learn support.

Hell, some games we lose simply because multiple nice people are playing one of their worst roles or the communication was just bad. Like, one guy calls mid or jungle, another calls mid or adc.. another says adc or jungle, then no one says anything and finally one guy is like 'oh, I'm only good at mid, please?' so the nice people all switch and one or two get pushed into playing something they are not comfortable at.
One of the reasons I don't play much anymore - can't be bothered arguing with chimps about which role to play. I'm amendable, and have no issue playing any role - but some of these fucking clowns literally can't play anything except ____. Literally had a match last night where EVERYONE but me was arguing over jungling. What happens, every one of those fucking clowns goes jungle leaving every lane open but mid (me). What is the point?

The reason they won't use a queue system like that is because it enforces the current meta - which has not been the way the game has been played in the past, and a fair number of matches still ignore the meta. Enforcing it just encourages stagnation in the game. I occasionally run in to this problem in ranked but it is by far the exception and I really don't see how 1 out of 20 or even 10 games is that bad considering you should be expecting to lose nearly half your games anyway. In my placement matches I got forced to play support twice, which I've literally played less than 20 times in my years of league, and we won both games because I was willing to take one for the team and not piss everybody off before the game started by first-picking mid.

Outside of ranked, pretty much anything goes, of course, but a queue isn't going to change that and if there were options to queue with lane picks and without I would do without every time. It's just not right for this kind of game. Just imagine trying to implement one in dota2, it would be pointless. League is quite a bit more stagnant but there's been variations still and the more champs/items/play League gets the more it's going to change.

Failing hard at treated rankeds like normals :p.

Realizing you can slip into the pits of doom and have to stop playing for 28 days for a reset does wonders to encourage frustration.

What do you mean stop playing for a reset? The only type of reset I am aware of is the elo decay system after one month of inactivity. It doesn't actually help or reset your MMR. Did I miss something?

Before I respond to the queue discussion, does anyone know when the summer split matches actually start? I can't for the life of me find even a rough date, it's all related to the promotion series which is over now. I watched Quantic's games against complexity, and I'm really interested to see if they are actually that much better when they start playing in the LCS, or if it was a luck/momentum thing. I really hope they are, as it'll increase the competition level even more. Ideally, I hope CLG sucks again, and hotshot realizes it's because of him and disbands or retools the team. Aphromoo, Link and Doublelift could all be top level players on the proper team. Chauster is serviceable as a jungler, but they really need a better top laner if they want to succeed.

Anyway.. The meta doesn't get changed by the people playing at the bottom and mid level, it gets changed by the pros and slowly trickles down to the rest of the players. Yes, a queue system would enforce the current meta, but queue up with friends when you want to try something completely off the wall (3 mid! Double jungle!). Most people aren't even good enough at the current meta to get past lower and mid skill levels (myself included) and don't need to be trying to reinvent the game. Plus, how often does a random group of people want to do something weird like that, and when they do, how often does it really work without skype communication?

Playing a weird champion in a certain role is not 'changing the meta' either, like a Jungle Karthus or mid Malphite. You can still talk about lane swapping if you want, or see if your bottom lane partner wants to try a kill lane or double bruiser comp, just like you would talk about it before the game in the current system. A queue just tells people what you wanted to play and matches you with others who want to play the other roles, rather then rolling the dice that you'll have someone who can play each role in the game. I'd rather wait 5 minutes for a queue when I really want to play a specific role, then get into game and then dodge if I can't play it. Or, have someone else do the same to me after we've picked champions and talked strategy during champ select, which happens so often it's annoying.

No one will ever convince me the negatives are worse then the positive you gain by a queue finder system. The only way you could think otherwise is if you have a vastly different idea of how it would work then I do. The system I imagine would just ease the frustration of getting a good team comp going and make everyone much happier overall. There will still be fringe cases of problems caused by the role finder queue, but there's vastly more issues under the current free for all system.

Yes, in ranked you should be decent at each role, but there's always a role you are better at or enjoy more and if everyone got the role they prefer you have a better chance for a good game. Additionally, in normals the queue would help people's enjoyment of the game as most can't play each role at similar skill levels. Sure, normals aren't as important, but no one likes losing because they were forced to play a role they suck at and ended up feeding or had a teammate do the same.

Summer Split will be in one to two months. Quickshot announced it during one of the EU LCS broadcasts but also said that they couldn't give an exact date.

The only things I'm not enjoying about this game (not that anyone asked but hey) are that people have little patience with folks learning how to play a champ (Hello?! What the fuck is playing against the AI for?!) and that it's tough to play against humans when you're a touch toasted as they wig out about sub par play.
I like to play my games a bit high thanks much!

I could give a shit if you smoke or whatnot, but typically it's folks playing poorly and then calling out in game that "I'm so high lol".

It's a game that requires teamwork to play. If you want to get baked, go play one of the great single player games out there.

I worded it poorly. I meant that even slight impairment will hurt your game to a good degree. Definitely not looking to be the rofslosh lurr lurr guy!
I'm not looking for a sport, more of a game.

I just don't see this being your game then. It is highly competitive, it takes months/years to develop the skills to play properly and it is annoying when someone is high or drunk on my team and they play like shit. Not that I am ragging on being drunk and playing a game, but like the previous post said, go play one of the many great single player games or a MMORPG when you are high. When you want to play a competitive game, then play LoL/Dota/MOBAwhateverthefuck.
