I’ve only done the wind and fire temples, but so far I’m still finding the “dungeons” lackluster compared to past zelda games (same problem with botw). I guess the sheer freedom of options you have to solve any given obstacle makes it hard to create puzzles. Most of the time I don’t feel like I solved anything so much as just wandered around and climbed some shit until the door to the boss opens.

Rain making it impossible to climb is still mega tarded. I know there’s elixirs and I think a set of armor that mitigates it, but it shouldn’t even be a thing.

Fire temple has felt like the weakest so far but I am certain my Switch running at like 15fps for the entirety of it had an impact.

Man. All I’ve done is explore and do shrines and poke big monsters in the eye. I’m struggling to keep arrow and bomb supplies.

Still haven’t done a dungeon and have just used food to explore the shit out of things. This game felt samey but it still grabbed the shit out of me. 10/10 would not get anything progression done again as I pillage innocent moblins.

Lack of infinite bombs is definitely a downside compared to BOTW though.

Also make sure to jump in every single well they are like treasure caves.

That dumbass who can't hold up the sign for the construction company cracks me up.

I am starting to get a feel for this game. I still am off-put by its harsh changes from its predecessor, in terms of in game stuff and lore. They really should have lead with showing you how long its been since the ending of BOTW, it would have imo helped some... even a "X years after the calamity..."

Each time I end up hitting up the desert first... I do not know why... first play of BOTW I was like "They want me to go straight... hard left! haha" so I ended up in sand town... this time, I have no idea how I ended up there but it was the first "thing" I did. It was a well done sequence and helped me get into the game more in terms of it being its /own/ game... but I still am not quite settled into it for some reason.

The differences mechanically or the new weapon system and tools... eh sure, that is fine- its more the "BOTW didnt impact anything or does not have any lasting affects" and "BOTW did happen and there are lasing affects"

It has been beaten since. Don’t forget shit like flight simulator which has the entire planet. Then you have games that span multiple planets now.

Any of those entries that they say beats it wouldn't seem to count. Space games, and a flight simulator that's just basically Google maps?

I stand by my claim that Daggerfall is the largest open-world game.

seeing that open world discussion.. Zelda clearly did influence console open worlds. like Dragon warrior influenced rpgs. but claiming DW invented rpgs would be a really stupid thing to say.
Every rpg can be traced back to 3 games though. Rogue, Ultima and Wizardry.

this was a great video on the subject.

"Open world's" come from Ultima and Wizardry. multiple towns, reputations, etc. ultima with its heavy focus on simulation. wizardry on its 3d dungeon crawl, party, open worlds, etc.
you can go back and look at the original dragon warrior/quest, and see the battles/menus were almost a direct copy of Wizardry.

Miyomoto never credited Rogue or roguelikes for the original LOZ, but frankly much of the design is there. particularly a number of the more structured roguelikes.

(ultima underworld might also get a nod in 92 for creating another genre entirely. the immersive sim. still heavily influenced by wizardy, but it really threw another aspect into the works)

guys are tempting me. But man I hated breath of the wild.

If you hated BOTW you will hate TOTK. Likely even more because although it added even more explorational options it added a lot more tedium. I can barely stand watching my son play it because every arrow shot he wants to attach something to it, then flips to eat some food to heal, then rips shit off his weapon to attach some new shit. Menu after menu interrupting the game flow. Drives me fucking nuts.

After the fifth time my wife said “who is that fucker and why should you even help him?”

I cracked up.

The reward system for using the stables is nice. I almost never used a horse in BOTW because you couldn't fast travel with it. Now I am compelled to for stupid pony points.

It's a testament to this game that when I got to the main quest to go explore the 4 regions, I decided to go for Zora's Domain first like in BOTW but somehow ended up getting lost doing shrines and various stuff and ooh-a- tower and what's-that-over-there and ended up in Rito Village.. then after that I decided to go to the Gorons and somehow ended up in Zora's Domain... this game is how you soft-suicide ADHD people, they just get lost for hours doing random shit until they shrivel up and die.

Oh yes BOTW was one thing... but I look at this one... and, yes, it is going tick some ticks of autists and ADHD people. I have a co-worker that is spectumy and he is like "I have to play this like I did BOTW, I /HAVE/ to get all the maps before I do anything...but...its too much!"

Edit...

Okay this bugs me.

BOTW, you (Link) were really the only one to be able to have or use the tech... it was presented and held throughout as unique.

But in this one, you get, at the start, what is presented as a unique and special thing. Then, well, no, just anyone can do it. "Oh we never thought IN OUR ENTIRE EXISTENCE to just "put" something on our weapon." then you go underground and everyone just makes tanks and stuff like no biggie... we can use this tech no problem - you really don't need that special arm thing...

That's pretty much exactly what I did, TOTK may be more DLC than full on new game, but it's been so easy for me to get lost in the world, even moreso than BOTW.

I'd still pick Elden Ring over this game any day of the week, but it's worth a playthrough just for the exploration alone.

I rarely bother doing any of that stuff and I'm doing just fine.

My biggest issue is that so little that I do is actually rewarding. At best I complete encounters with basically the same supplies/weapons I started with, and most chests contain completely useless shit or maybe a weapon that it completely unexciting because all weapons except the absolute best are disposable (because repairing is limited so you don't want to waste it on anything less). Only the chests with armor in them actually feel like a true reward.

I still like it a lot more than BotW though. There's far less tedium here, at least if you know the ways around it. You can avoid lightning in thunderstorms, can still climb walls when it's raining, and while I still hate durability at least it's less shitty this time around. They even made it so you can use as many Amiibos per day as you want (still once each of course) and I don't even bother since the unique items (edit: unique armors, not weapons) can be found in game and I don't feel I really need the other loot.

I want to try doing that glitch to keep the prologue master sword that cant break, if for nothing else just to have a weapon you aren't supposed to keep, and also doesn't have durability.

Looks like a tedious process but I guess once you glitch it into your save you dont have to worry about it anymore. Plus, wouldn't surprise me if they patched it.

If anyone's interested, here is a link, but don't watch if you want to play through normally as I would imagine it makes you a lil OP with a 30 dmg weapon that doesn't ever break. (It's also probably weak conpared to some late-game fuse weapons, but I haven't gotten that far yet.)

I will say I have been heavily abusing the item dupe to dupe diamonds for rupees and duping good weapons so I don’t have to worry about that shit. Got the master sword last night so won’t have to do the weapon dupe part as much hopefully

Hmm you can avoid lightning in the first one too.

While I agree that you don’t really need to use the attachments to arrows as much as my son does I don’t think you should really speak to how tedious the game is overall when you are using amiibos to load up on shit. That’s basically using cheat codes. If you’re not doing that you have to deal with tedium a lot more.

I guess I just never got the helm in botw then.

I said I didn't bother with Amiibo in totk. Only thing I did was get a couple of the glider skins, since those are actually exclusive still. Didn't even need to get Epona this time since the botw stable carries over.
