Did a double take today when I saw DCC at my walmart, pretty nice.

It's interesting how ambiguous that cover is compared to the others

I love that movie. Really should get around to reading the book at some point. Well, I'll be done with all of Mushoku Tensei soon enough. Just started book #20.
The book is different. Even heavier into the 80s nostalgia. You recognize the elements and characters they took to make the movie, but it's very different, unlike what you'd get if they did it the other way (movie, then novelization of movie).

I haven't read the sequel, because I am certain it would destroy what made the original good.

Finished DCC, and I see what some of you were talking about. Enjoyed it a lot, but maybe a little less than some of the earlier ones due to the whole mass battle thing.

After Carl and Donut, I contend that Samantha is the best character. I'mma be a little bummed if she suddenly gets feelings though.

DCC is great but does really suffer from making absolutely no sense sometimes. The train level being a prime example.

Savage Awakening 4.

2/5, and that's being generous. One giant training montage. At least it wasn't as bad as DotF core bullshit, but it was pretty fucking boooooooooring. Also, apparently he's lifting planets now and shit. So I'm sure that bodes well for the future.

The actual plot has slowed down to a glacial pace.

(and I'm not saying that just because the last chapter has him doing camping on an ice asteroid while looking for some decent exercise after slaughtering a space kitty with less than 75% of life lost)

Right now, it's like 15 chapters of training where not a single surprise happens, with half a chapter where you learn a bit about the Monsters that have been sent to hunt for him, and then back to more training (when he's not banging his girlfriend for levels, that is).

I'd say Ad Astra has entered the cycle where he has to keep writing without having an idea of what to do that won't also end the story and the money train.

Started Matabar, writing is good i am curious as to where it goes (i just got to where they are leaving for the town/city-Main Char starts hunter training)

another one i started reading is RuneBlade. i am slightly confused with a few of his stat powers., like getting to 0 health DOESN'T kill you, health is like "regen" 0 health= no regen. but the story is decent and the fights are good. though the main Char is...just a touch overpowered- there is a REASON why he is overpowered. porkchop FTW!

i wouldn't call progression fantasy litrpg adjacent, it is more a precurser to litrpg imo ...pretty most fantasy fiction stories are progression fantasies, plus the genre has been around for a long time though it was not called progression fantasy, just fantasy.

Conan from the 1930's, Harry Potter, Belgariad, the Wheel of Time Series, etc Heck, LOTR is "progression" fantasy if you want to look analytically- we have "farm boys" leaving home to go on an epic journey and gets powerful at the end of the story - granted that is not FRODO(technically he gets weaker), but it is Merry and Pippin.

Progression fantasy is a subgenre with three very specific elements:

- You have personal or intrinsic power
- You want or need to increase the amount of personal power you have
- The pursuit of the increase of that power makes up a significant part of the story

LOTR isn't a progression fantasy. The only character that has a meaningful increase in their personal power is Gandalf, and it is entirely off-screen.
Harry Potter is borderline. One main point is that Harry doesn't really increase his power - he just learns how to use it better.
Belgariad is progression fantasy. Belgarion unlocks and then grows his magical powers and gains more.
(never read the wheel of time - by the time I might have wanted to check it, the critics saying "800 pages, 50 plot, 750 filler" were all over the place. But from my understanding, it does fit somehow the mold)

One aspect that I always considered needed for progression fantasy is an inherent tiering system to measure progress against. Like Cradle with the copper/iron/jade/gold/etc.

Many stories follow police detectives getting better at solving crimes. Those aren't progression fantasy either. Ukerric and Ritley have pretty much outlined how I feel about the definition of actual progression fantasy. The simple fact of "progressing" is not enough.

Harry Potter has plenty of hooking up and dating in it. Yet it is still not a "romance" series per the definition.

Just finished the 8(?) currently available Noobtown books.

I'll preface this by saying that I'm probably more of the target audience here, older adult that still thinks like a teenager, so a lot of the stuff didn't bother me and/or even amused me. But there is a LOT of pop culture referencing being done here, and at times it gets a little ridiculous. Star Wars is the biggest influence, but even stuff like, "Super easy, barely an inconvenience" made a few appearances. Lots of anime references that went over my head. Lots of childish acronyms, like a nation being named something like Falcon United Crest & Kingdom (FUCK). The demon he encounters literally in the first moments, and is bound to him for the entire series, he nicknames Shart. Penis jokes galore, etc.

So if you easily get tired of that sort of thing, maybe pass on this series. I rate it overall 3/5 (2.5 rounded up) because I laugh at a lot of that shit the first time or two, and I don't take it seriously in this series. If it were presented as something super-serious I might not be as receptive to it, but it is clearly there to get a chuckle out of someone like me, so whatever. It is nowhere near as amusing as Frank in the Ripple System books, but not much is.

The story isn't anything all that complicated either, and at one point halfway through the books it is almost like a switch is thrown and suddenly the MC Jim is massively OP, so it isn't even all that satisfying in terms of leveling or progressing. But at least there isn't any motherfucking core building bullshit! Still, it amused me well enough with stuff like one of the gods being Logan, the Badgerine (badgers are a super big deal in this world), and it was a quick read, so I'm not disappointed that I read them, and will read more.
