Started reading this one.

I like the premise a lot but parts of it really pull me out of it. This is a 19 year old cadet sent on a mission to gather intelligence by attending wizard school. This person would not have the slightest inkling about high level secret squirrel magitek beyond using it as required for the mission. But she instantly knows exactly how egghead super scientists on Earth have reverse engineered a magical artifact that she also knows nothing about.

I hate that kind of lazy writing. But the rest of it is enjoyable if you can ignore the Mary Sue moments.

Dungeon Crawler Carl 7 has been out a few days now if you're into that sort of thing.

Ukerric Ukerric This one is excellent.

Truly superbly written. Astounding level of detail and depth. No way this doesn't get published into something more proper when the guy wises up. Not really a LitRPG really. More in line with traditional fantasy but has some minor nods to LitRPG.

Progression fantasy is LitRPG-adjacent. Need to read. When work will let me sleep better (my MD tells me that I need to avoid stress; I'd also like to).

I’ll give it a go after I finish the latest DCC book.

Which reminds me, for those that don’t know, This Inevitable Ruin (dungeon crawler Carl book 7) just released on Monday. Audiobook version not til next year.

Ooooh, didn't spot it was from Kirill Klevanski.

Got a load of his books on my kindle.

I'm halfway through DCC, and maybe it is just me, but there are just way too fucking many characters now. Pay attention to it and you'll notice that every single fucking new scene starts with Carl listing off the 5-20 different people that are with him. It is just getting far too unwieldy. There are like a hundred different characters that can show up at any given moment, and even if I weren't waiting a year between books I would still probably have a hard time keeping them all straight.

On top of that, at least at this point in the book, it is getting heavier and heavier. I get that it is a shitty situation and Carl and Donut (and everyone else) are feeling the weight of all the terrible shit they've had to do to stay alive, and I completely understand that the author probably wants us to feel that, but watching the light slowly get extinguished from everyone's souls is extremely depressing to watch. That's on purpose, I know, but still.

I still love the series, and will keep on until the end, but between the dozens of new characters every few pages and the descent into nihilism, it is getting harder and harder to get excited about picking it up. Maybe the last half of this book will change things around, but unless he kills almost all of the characters (which I fervently hope he does not do), the huge cast thing at least isn't going to go away.

Hard to respond to most of that without spoilers, but I had the same concerns as you. I don’t think the heaviness is going away anytime soon, but faction wars has been built up to being this vengeance act for quite awhile now. With how the floors are set up, my hope is that the next one will be more actual dungeon crawling and less outright war.

Yeah, dungeon Yu-Gi-Oh was kinda stupid and faction wars is well, a war. Hopefully book 8 gets back into actual dungeon crawling.

If you've read other stuff by Matt Dinniman, you'll see he writes very, very dark stuff.

The 10th is also where a lot of the previous crawlers take deals because they can't bear to continue.

So it is going to be dark and deadly.

Also, under the goofy cover for the new Orbit hardcovers:

I started to copy this book onto word files so I can copy it to my Kindle and read it later.
The end of chapter 14, the author left this note:

Kirill Klevanski said:
This is where the introduction to the first book ends. Yes, the introduction is huge, but the book itself will also be... very long.
There are four books of 120 chapters planned for the story. The average chapter length is 5,500 words.
The schedule for the near future is 2 chapters a week. On Tuesdays and Fridays. I'd love your feedback and comments to see if you like the story or not.
Always yours,
Kir

Not sure what you're getting at.
I always do that for stories people talk about. I wait for them to get about 100 chapters and copy each chapter into a word document, them convert into mobi files. Them I can read them on my Kindle instead of my phone.

But what I was getting at is that the series is planned to have 4 books, each with 120 chapters. So it looks like it will be available in other formats at some point.

About everything by Klevanski is on amazon, so I expect this one to get there as well.

Which means (btw) it will be stubbed once book 1 is complete, so get your fix.

Its a really solid take on the Steampunk Magitech Humans vs old world elves trope.
