The feeling of peace and general "being at ease" was more intense and real than anything I've experienced before or since. The only thing I can compare it to in terms of intensity is the overwhelming feel of ecstasy/happiness that comes with taking ecstasy. Hard for me to attribute to a placebo effect

It's not a placebo effect, per se. The benefits of meditation and the like are quite well known and recognized by science. That doesn't mean God is beaming you MDMA.
