Be proactive? I work along side the Navy and work with a lot of retied Chiefs/low rank officers and the one thing that always stands out to me is how proactive they are in getting to the bottom of things. That and they also stay on top of things. Don't relent and keep on someones ass until you get what you're needing, if for nothing else then CYA if it comes down to it.

Do you have a command master sergeant or something of the like? If so I would consider going to them.

Ive consulted my supervisor a TSgt and he doesn't have any answers as he is a cross trained person with his own learning hurdles to get over and he doesn’t know what is normal or not like I do

I’ve run into a past NCOIC and talked to him about this problem and he said similar stuff and said I’m just being a spectator on the sidelines which I am

I’m just being stubborn cause I have never worked somewhere where they don’t make use of me and here it’s I need to ask….for real?

Every place when it was my turn to train the new people it’s get the fuck over here and sit with me and let’s go

I refuse to ask “pretty please” “oh please would you train me?”

Yearly performance reports are due December and if I had to write one write now I have done zero real world work and it has never been like that before

Sounds like you are hurting yourself. I'd give you low marks. I don't know about you but I wanted to advance when I was in the service and that was all entirety on myself to do it. I arranged training on another base on my days off and got all my practicals done and signed. I'd have made E6 in 5 years if I had renewed. Be assertive in getting training and being useful to your unit.

Yes and no

I am hitting 15 years in February and with how much leave I always save up and never use combined with the military lets you acclimate into future career I just need four more years to go

I put off ranking up and let HYT dictate forcing me into such ranks

They changed E5 into 20 and even recently added 2 more years to it for 22

I am perfectly content and have never envied higher ranks as the higher ranks just do managing of people and writing award packages and organizing morale stuff ….I HATE ALL OF THAT

I have outlasted all of the ones who went all out and super try hard as they burn out

Any work put before me I crush it and do it but I do not volunteer to do extra

And as for low marks you can’t give an eval that is negative unless paperwork to back it up and I haven’t received any nor done anything paperwork worthy so average is fine

No but you can get average across the board which is honestly just as bad.

I know you are trying frame it as “Todays Military has gone soft” with the complaints about not being trained unless asked, but you are a self described 15 year SSgt who does just enough to get by and none of the things that are required as you gain rank and responsibility. And you disliking doing award packages means you are doing nothing to help the Airman below you. It honestly sounds like your Leadership realizes all this and has sloughed you off into a dead end unit so that they can focus on people wanting to improve themselves.

Are you planning on doing 22 as an e-5? are you part of that new 40% at 20 retirement plan? If so that'll be a teeny pension, unless you plan on gaming the stupid 100% disability system like everyone seems to be doing lately.

I am like 90% sure you would have had the up or out rule put on you in the army. At least when I was at Fort Bragg.

I never met a 20 year E5. Not one.

With the way recruiting is right now wouldn't be surprised to see more and more of it.

Yeah I wanted to advance so I did. I made E5 at 3 years almost exactly. I intended to get out and I was E6 promotable. Sergeant Major in no uncertain terms told me that if I reenlisted I'd get it and if I didn't I wouldn't. lol.

I know a good number of Air Force dudes and the requirements to rank up are relatively clear. Get a bachelor's and some other stuff and the pathway opens up more. The E7 hurdle I hear is a fairly unique pain in the ass. Some kind of event you have to manage each year but it only counts for that one year. I don't really understand that one but I didn't get to into it with my friend when he made E7 either.

15 years you should have made E6 by 10 years if not earlier. Seriously.

Only place I ever saw anything close to this in the Coast Guard was for the rates that were insanely full and therefore crazy competitive. They would be the aviation rates. Lots of E5s with a long time in service though I'm not sure any were 20 years. Lots of people want in those rates and we don't have a lot of spots. Advancement is slow unless you're really scoring high.

I remember reading that the head CG guy meritoriously advanced one of the more famous rescue swimmers so he wouldn't get kicked out and get bad PR lol. That rate was one where people were stuck at E-5 then kicked out for failing to advance.

But it looks like Netripp is doing 20 as an E-5 unless I misread?

Yep that's one of the rates where it's an issue. People that join that rate do it for life so there is basically no advancement.
