My mom: can Shohei get to 60-60?

Me: Well, he’d have to average 1 HR and 1 steal per game for the rest of the season.

Shohei: *proceeds to hit another home run and steal another base today*

55-55 seems pretty reasonable, 60-60 would be an absolute disaster from the Dodgers because the commissioner would probably pass a rule saying that Demigods had to play in their own league.

Judge with a 319/454/683 9.9 BWAR season under the radar is so wild.
People go absolutely ape shit over the home run and steal combination but I think the case can be made that Judge still has superior offensive production.

Parity in HRs. Damn near same RBI. So it's down to the massive stolen base difference and more extra base hits ohtani has

14 more RBI is a bit more than near same. Shohei has five more extra base hits.

But you're completely omitting the *49* extra walks. That's a massive gap and a walk is much better than a steal in most cases. And, hey, Judge himself has 10 steals.

You can't give him an edge with all of five extra base hits and ignore walks.

ok, so 42 steals and 5 extra base hits is worth more than the walks, and batting average difference. therefore ohtani is the MVP of National League and American League. you feel better now?

Sure, that's your opinion and a common one. A lot of people don't value an OBP that's 76 points higher. I don't think it makes much objective sense but to each their own.

Oh, another good one, batting line with runners in scoring position:

Ohtani: .261.331.478.810
Judge: .336 .455 .696 1.151

Avg/OBP/slg/ops

But stolen bases soooo good! Speed and power much wow

PTI had a stat on 50/50 that I found interesting. There have been 49 instances where a player had 50+ HRs in a season - those players averaged 7.4 SB in that same season. For the 41 instances with 50+ SBs, those players averaged 8.4 HRs.

Judge's season is more valuable, no question. Which is born out in about every metric and stat possible. Much higher OPS, he's playing CF, he hits for more power etc. wRC+ is the best single stat to measure offensive performance - Judge is having the best offensive season (and it's not really close) since Barry Bonds' "prime" years.

Ohtani is having a mega season, but in overall value it's not technically his best year.
