They're saying the arm isn't broken, just fucked up. So he'll probably be out for awhile again. The HW division really is paper thin.
Thin AND constantly injured. Someone posted yesterday that the entire top 10 had fought a grand total of 7 times so far in 2014. 8 now that Overeem got Rothwelled.
There doesn't even seem to be anyone on the horizon. You know the second youngest person in the top 15 of their official rankings is JDS, who is 30? And the only younger one is Stefan Struve, who is 26 but apparently has the heart of an elderly baboon.
Now, top heavyweights are traditionally a bit older than other divisions. I assume because speed it a little less important. But even looking lower down the rankings there's almost no one I could pick out of a line up who is under 30.
Vitaly Minakovin Bellator is 29. He's good, probably the best of these guys right now.
Jared Rosholtis 28, but he's boring as fuck and won't challenge for the title.
Shawn Jordanis 29, he's fun to watch but he's a lower end gatekeepr at best.
Alexander Volkovmight be the best prospect. He's 25 and exciting, and at 6'7" he's still got room to add muscle(weighs 235) without giving up too much speed. He could be a real challenger in a couple years.
Blagoi Ivanovis interesting. He's still only 27. He lost his last fight to Volkov, but he's still improving and his elite Sambo background helps a lot.
Aaaaand, that's about it for even vaguely known people. 3 guys who will be well in to their 30's before they make an impact in the UFC, if ever. And 2 guys that are still more potential than reality.
Really the next big guy is gonna be someone we are barely aware of now. Which is weird. I remember hearing hype about Cain back in 2007, before he was even rumored to be signed by the UFC. People get so hyped about HW prospects there should be someone obvious we're waiting on to make that breakthrough. Travis Browne and Stipe Miocic are not that guy, both are already in their 30s and shown they're not on the same level as the current big 3.
Smealinho Ramais probably the closest thing out there to a serious young gun who people expect big things from. After him it's a bunch of Eastern Europeans and Russians and there's no telling what they'll turn out like once they hit the big leagues.
