Is Cormier really viewed as a threat to Jones? I haven't seen him recently but I never thought people expected anything of that level from him.
Have you never seen DC fight? Legit Olympic level wrestler with stupidly fast hands who has maybe the
best striking to takedown transitionsof anyone over like 155. JJ has never fought someone that can bring the kind of pressure he does. He's like a bigger, faster, stronger version of Rashad with better grappling and striking.
Josh Barnett is a legit top 5-10 245lb+ Heavyweight. Cormier beat him up on the feet and ragdolled him when he wanted.
Antonio Silva is 265lbs, has fought for the
heavyweightbelt, and is a legit top 5-10 HW. Cormier blitzed him with strikes and ran through him like he was a joke in under 4 minutes. Knocked him the fuck out. Mark Hunt and Alistair Overeem couldn't put Silva away, fat Cormier made it look like child's play.
This is when he was fighting as a tubby 230lb heavyweight that had no business fighting guys 20-40lbs+ bigger than him.
Now he's at 205 and in the best shape he's been in ages, probably since he was working out for the Olympics. He was injured when he fought Hendo and still getting used to the cut to 205. Ask Hendo how much that slowed him down...
edit: Look at that second gif, we've all seen it plenty of times as an example of him manhandling Hendo. I want you to look at the 1-2 combo leading in to it. The punches are designed as a distraction to let him get deep inside, but that is a legit right straight that clips Hendo hard. DC's hands are that fast, before Hendo's head is rocking back to position DC has his leg. Imagine if Hendricks had those kind of chops in that last fight with Lawler, instead of using his head as a ball rest for Lawler he'd have been throwing him around the cage. And when Hendo does a decent job getting back to his feet LOOK AT THAT FUCKING TRIP! DC is really quick.
It looked like someone beating up their little brother for fun.
None of this means he'll beat JJ. Jon Jones is legit GOAT at LHW and has every tool there is at his disposal except maybe serious 1 punch power. He'll have a huge reach advantage(84.5" vs ~72") that he absolutely knows how to take advantage of, and he's gone 4+ rounds 5 different times. We still don't know how DC's stamina will hold up for that long. We're excited because DC presents an entirely new challenge for the best fighter in the world. Gus pushed JJ to the limit by using a lot of his own tools against him, but DC will have to get in his face to impose his own game. That coin has two sides though, DC has never fought anyone like JJ before. And it's not like Jones is an amateur at infighting. He's got a huge and varied skillset inside that includes trips, elbows, and knees that no one else in MMA is using at this level. DC has never been taken down, but Jones isn't going to come at him with traditional shots.
DC isn't the favorite. But he's got the best shot pre-fight of anyone JJ has fought at giving him serious trouble. Jones has been a commodity since the Bonnar fight. Since then he's been the favorite in every fight by at least -200(bet $200 to win 100) and since getting the belt against Shogun he's been -500 or better against everyone except Glover(-450). Probably because that was coming right off the Gus fight, a lot of stupid people bought in to the Glover hype way too much. He opened this fight at -170 and it's currently at -172. So yeah, DC is viewed as a very legitimate threat. Plus people hate Jones because he's a turbodouche.
Of course the real X factor is how many eye pokes will Jones be allowed. If it's his usual unlimited number he'll probably win. At least Cormier is taking that threat serious and
training for it.
JackSlack has promised a "Killing the King" article for this fight, I can't wait to read it.
edit: Yeah, I'm pretty excited about this fight.
