The biggest thing is he was gassed at the start of the fight before they even hit the ground. I'm still waiting for them to upload the main card so I can see the body shot that could have done that.

I can't imagine that happening from mendes swinging for the fences after Conor's opening kick.

Well you could be right it would be bad if McGregor lost. But if he pulled out it would of been worse for the life of the division no>?

Just watched the opening strikes in slow mo. The spinning heal kick Conor throws out in the first second of the fight 100% wifs, and catches the inside of Mendes armpit. It just looks bad, but it's a glancing blow

The next hit decides the fight, it's at 4 seconds in, and is almost exactly like the gif Grim posted from 2 years back. Even the announcers missed it.

from 4:56 to 4:41. It takes 15 seconds to see Mendes gasping for air as they get up, there were no other shots that produced that, and Mendes had took Conor to the ground after that huge knee.

Conor has one powerful fucking knee strike. He pretty much decided the fight on that one kick which matches up with what Conor said about him feeling Mendes weakening as he was on top of him

The division itself would have been fine. The ppv and Conor's hype train would have been wrecked if Conor didn't fight last night.

He didn't fight no names, he just didn't fight wrestlers=P Brimage was on about McGregor's level when he was his first fight, though it seems Conor broke him. Max Holloway was in the same boat, except he's come out of that fight like an animal. He's pretty much one big win away from a title shot himself. Brandao was a young and highly hyped TUF winner. Poirier is legit(and holy shit he's still only 26!?).

Now Siver is a whole other story. He was officially DFW's new BFF at that point and they were God damned sure going to hype him up for the big Aldo fight. They even mysteriously moved Siver up in to the top 10 before that fight.

If you look at the rankings it kind of looks like the FW division was split in to the top 5 and the next 10 and they were all kept separate. Which is why it's so fishy that Conor got fast tracked without fighting anyone in that top 5(Edgar/Mendes/Lamas etc), though Holloway is top 5 now.

So yeah, Conor wasn't really fighting nobodies, but he definitely didn't take the hardest path to the title...up until last night.

As for calling out Conor 2.5 years ago, I used to watch a lot of InsideMMA and he'd popped up a couple times. Stopped DVRing it because Bas and Kenny are fucking insufferable together. Should start again and just fast forward through the studio bits.

Plus having AXS TV fights set to record means I see a lot of the smaller promotions, I always try and point out the guys that are killers on those shows like Thomas Almeida was. It makes me feel smart when I say something and the UFC signs them immediately.

OK next guy to be on the watch out for the UFC signing,Joseph Duffy. Irish fighter, which they love, who has wins over Conor McGregor and Norman Parke back in 2010. Left MMA to box for a few years, recently back and looking good. As they keep tapping in to the ravenous Irish fanbase he seems like a no brainer.

I mean yeah it's probably unfair for me to call all his opponents nobodies, but he ran wild against a bunch of up and comers and his only ranked win was against Siver. They had Conor ranked 3rd and gave him a title shot? That's gotta be the fastest track the UFC has ever put someone on, and it could have backfired pretty badly on them when Aldo pulled out of the fight.

I'd suggest folks go back and read JackSlack's articles on McGregor if you get a chance. Because of course I do, but also because he's brilliant at striking breakdowns and he makes it easy to understand just why Conor's stand up is actually pretty special.

Last night I kept waiting for him to use that straight kick to the leg, but I guess the supposed injury kind of slowed that down.

edit: Was just watching the finish again and I love that the first thing Conor threw when they were up was another of those teep kicks to Chad's gut, like he was just waiting the entire time on the ground to grind up his midsection some more. Ithinkthis is that kick, which didn't look like it landed so hard in real time but you can see here it's pretty solid.

I wish this gif was a bit longer. That was an awesome moment after the bell when they just stood there for about 5 seconds staring at one another. What a fucking fight

I wasn't saying he did anything wrong, I'm saying he missed an opportunity. The walk-away KO is as pimp mode as it gets in MMA.

I mean you're right, finishing the fight was the right thing to do. But it's better bragging rights to walk away!

Hype is all there is, the only person he beat whose name I actually recognized was Dennis Siver, who is a solid fighter but was picked because he was an obvious mismatch for McGregor.
Poirier is a much better fighter and more well known than Siver

Great fight card. The salt in here a few pages back was real strong. Props to Mendes, but he was peppered with kicks early in that first round. Conor did a great job in the guard majority of that fight, essentially resting.

Aldo is a cleaner striker than Mendes, but he never hurt Mendes like Conor did with that easiness in the 2nd fight. Can't wait to see it.

Missed the Nelson-Thatch fight. Oh well.
