It is the stupid gloves they wear, the gloves actually cause your fingers to spread. Rogan has talked about it on his pod cast many times. I think he said the gloves Bellator uses are way better.

I despise Koschek but he's not exactly coming off an easy schedule. Of his last 6 fights, he missed 2 to injury. The losses were against Hendricks, Lawler, Woodley, and now Ellenberger. So two guys who would go on to become division champions, the guy who is currently #3, and now Ellenberger who is #11. That's a pretty rough fight schedule for someone who isn't even a ranked welterweight any more.
