I always wait to capture most monsters until I see them limping, though the bear has so little life that you could easily kill him. It only takes 2 tranqs to capture so if you hit him with more then he isn't ready to cap. Obviously make sure the tranq hits the monster and not a little monster/misses.

Another good bet is most monsters will change zones when they are weak/limping, so that could be another sign he is ready to be capped. Not always the case though a lot of cap quests will happen when you change zones, lay trap, and tranq. If you try to cap them in the zone you found them in, you either did a TON of damage or they aren't ready to cap.

Also, for all of you who are far enough to have gotten the Argosy ship to come to Moga village (or online has it from the start). Make sure you eat EVERYTIME you do a big monster. This gives a wide range of buffs from more hp, stamina, damage, defense, elemental resistances, or gunner traits. Also, you will get 'felyne' skills which have interesting names that aren't so easily understandable unless you look them up. Unfortunately, I don't have a handy list, but eating for the HP/Sta/Def/Att buffs are worth it regardless.

Are you only able to hunt in moga woods without a quest? I want to hunt in the desert but it seems I can only do that through quests.

Correct. You can do gathering missions in other zones, but the free roam is limited to Moga Woods.

I'm really enjoying online more than Tri. Tri had a very linear progression, similar to offline where it gets harder little by little. It felt a little repetitive. MH3U throws you under the bus instantly. You can get to high rank (HR3) in around 9 or 10 missions. Then they're throwing two monsters at you. Also high rank is different from low (like Tri). You don't always get full supplies, and you can start in any area of the map. So online does not baby you at all.

Super pumped for double barroth, high rank armor and weapons, and better armor skills tomorrow.

Got all my Jaggi armor and Iron Gospel so I tried online - killed Qurupeco with 3 rando's in a beginner lobby. Fun stuff.

Is a 3ds worth buying for this game? 3ds design and dual screens has always looked awkward to me, but i'm definitely not shelling out for the shitty Wii U.

I was considering picking up a 3DS and this game, but as soon as I heard that the 3DS version has no online play I decided against it. I find MH games to be boring as fuck solo and there's no way that I'm buying a WiiU.

A 3DS is worth buying for other games, like Fire Emblem, and I'm going to pick one up eventually. I would not buy one just for this game though since they went with no Online for it.

Really depends on the person buying it. You'd be surprised how many people don't care about no online play, which like Sean said, the 3DS does not have. You could still connect with other 3DS users or a Wii U user, just not online. You get all of the content the Wii U game has, you'll just not be able to do that content online(you can do the online quests offline, but they're harder and mean't for groups of players, still possible to do). If you do ever get a Wii U, you can transfer all of your MH data to the Wii U version. You'd be surprised how many people bought Wii U/3DS and both games. Hardcore and probably a bit stupid but more love for MH is fine by me.

The praise this game is getting is pretty amazing, I would say this game turned it around for the whole series and the Western scene is guaranteed to get some love.

That said, getting any system for one game is usually not a good idea. But there are several good 3DS games.. Monster Hunter, Fire Emblem (this game is probably unanimously good) , Castlevania, Paper Mario, Legend of Zelda: OOT 3D, Mario Kart 7, a few Mario games (besides the ones mentioned), Kid Icarus, and probably more.

TL;DR - Game is really great and everyone who plays it seems to think so, you lose online play on the 3DS (which does not affect content), but you have a selection of other great games you could play if MH doesn't suit you. Plus you can transfer MH data to the Wii U if you ever think online play is absolutely needed.

The new Luigi's Mansion 3DS game is coming out in a couple days too and sounds really good:http://www.gametrailers.com/reviews/...rk-moon-review

And if you buy a 3DS XL and either Luigi's Mansion or the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game (it's a Roguelike, actually looks kinda good) and register them on Nintendo by like April 30th you get a choice of One of Five free games:

If you register a 3DS XL on Club Nintendo starting today, and register one of those two games, between March 21 and April 30, you'll get a free downloadable copy of Super Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone!, Star Fox 64 3D, or Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive! Your choice, so you aren't stuck with Freakyforms.
Right now Target has 3DS XLs on sale for $160, including the new Limited Edition Pikachu 3DS XL.

Having dropped a bunch of hours on Tri on the Wii, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this point. At least for Tri, there is online only content such as Jhen Mohran and Alatreon (which is admittedly end-game, but they're still interesting fights). Also, while Cha Cha is helpful, he doesn't replicate having other teammates for distraction, healing, or even basic things like chopping/smashing monster bits. The only difference being if you have friends that play, then you could just as easily replicate online play.

I want a WiiU now...

Well, when I said that I mean't as in ACTUAL content. You do lose the 'content' of playing with friends. Which is a great part of the MH experience.

There is no exclusive online content for this game and you can go to the 'online' content even on the 3DS. You just can't connect with others online. I did some online content solo on my Wii U when my internet went down last night.

Just as an FYI, found this map this morning and so far it has been good for the Flooded Forest area. If anyone is looking for gatherables it could be helpful:

Yeah that should be pretty correct, just remember it is a Tri guide and some things have changed. Though the mining seems to be pretty much the same. It does not have any G rank stuff (highest rank), but that takes a little while to get to.

Anyone doing any online tonight? Think I'm ready to jump in and wouldn't mind grouping up.

Same as Man. Maybe not until 11 or 12 EST. I can help with some low rank missions if needed.

So far the online experience has been underwhelming. Every group just wants to do Lagiacrus and no one can kill him, lol.

Edit: Oh, I forgot about standing around at the port for 15 minutes waiting for people to check in for the quest and no one responding in chat / mic
