My Monster Hunter experience:

-Heard tons of good things about MH Tri Ultimate for the Wii U back in like 2014. Was looking for something new to get into so I took a swing at it. Couldn't get into it, was constantly lost and the lack of lock-on sucked. Gave up, and this was during an era where I basically never gave up on any good games, I'd finish everything. The good news is I ended up playing Bloodborne and Dark Souls II instead and got hugely into Fromsoft.

-Got MH World for free circa 2017 or so and actually liked the look of that one, seemed to fix a lot of stuff. Put it down cause I didn't want to play the series too out of order.

-Took another swing at the series on Switch and 3DS with MH Generations and MH4 respectively, around 2020 when I bought a bunch of things I'd been interested in to play with my higher-than-normal free time that year. Tried my best to get into both. MH4's visuals were too rough for me to get into it, and MH Generations, while decent, just felt kind of pointless when there were newer ones out.

-Tried MH Rise in 2021, thought it was too anime (if I'm thinking of the right game) and too "Switch-y". Nothing felt impactful and it looked about ten years out of date. Ended up just going "fuck it" and deciding I'd play World at some point and leave it at that.

-Loaded MH World back up in 2025, played the first few hunts, find it to be lots of fun. Not sure why it is, but MH World is the only one of these that I can get into AT ALL. Iceborne looks pretty cool too. I guess I'll give this a full-on go in the near future. At this point World has so much content built onto it that it's a pretty huge game, and IMO it looks better than the ones newer than it look. Playing World on the PS5 with full Resolution mode, the framerate doesn't even drop at all compared to full Framerate mode, and it looks amazing. At least one of the MH games clicked for me at all, but either way I'll prolly stick with World.

I'm a huge fan of the hunts in Final Fantasy 12/13, and a game built around that sort of thing, with Souls-like gameplay, should be a dream series for me. Maybe after World I'll be so fired-up for MH that I'll be able to play the other ones.

MHGU is the best non World/Iceborne/Wilds MH imo. No point in playing anything else before then and if you put some hours into clearing World/Iceborne then Wilds is a step up from World in most ways, but still a long way to go in terms of adding content to compete.

Yeah, I"ve watched Arekkz, PWARGaming, and a few others. It's all information overload. I'd like to find one that just gives a simple description of how to start a fight, get into the red spirit gauge as fast as possible, and hopefully just repeat that process until the monster is dead. The only way I've been able to get into red consistently is by popping a bunch of wounds in focus mode with RB. Also, I suck at countering and I don't think I've successfully executed a foresight slash even once yet.

PWARGaming made LS sound like a good option for doing the story stuff, since he recommended just using the paralyze sword the whole way through, but maybe LS gameplay just isn't for me. I normally play charge blade or gunlance, but it's been ages since I played any MH at all and I didn't feel like relearning all the phial or shelling stuff to git gud again.
Getting Red gauge asap is all about counters. Counter the roar, counter the first hit and you're pretty much there. Then you just stay in that mode as long as possible mashing Y and occasional R2+B for counter.

Advanced: Really mastering it requires timing of the counters, especially of the Iai Spirit Slash which is a second counter you use when you know the timing as it gives you longer time to react to a monsters hit. Also you can hold your regular Counter move to help with the timing. Once your in Red mode your move startup frames are so quick tyhat you can constantly weave in iframes with spirit counters and just keep wailing on the monster.

I love LS in this. Probably its best iteration in MH. Truly busted.

Why can't I craft Nu Udra weapons after beating Black Flame? I have enough materials but there's a lock on them.

Yeah, I don't have a Wii U anymore but I'm willing to play MHGU/Wilds on the Switch and maybe MH4U on the 3DS after World/Iceborne if I'm super into the series at that point.

I’ve been fucking around with LaLa Barina’s SnS cause of all the “paralysis SnS op” stuff I’ve seen here and on Reddit. I didn’t bother practicing in the training area or anything, just kinda figuring it out on my own since it is incredibly strong.

I have mostly been doing the Y, Y, Y, Y, Y+B, Y+B to get the 4 hit combo then do the drop back and jump forward with a downward stab move. Finally looked at the controls and figured out how to do the back step holding B and then jump up and slam down with sword or shield.

I guess my question is.. what should I be trying to do other than just landing tons of hits and doing the big downward stabby thing? Is the goal to create wounds with the jumping shield slam thing, then destroy them with the downward stabby thing? Or should I be doing the LT+RB move to pop wounds?

At the end of the day I guess it doesn’t really matter cause I’ve killed everything just fine with it button mashing, but I’d like to at least have some ideal attack loop rather than just hit em till they’re dead.

Made a frenzy SnS build and a burst gunlance build this weekend. Gonna have to start focusing on the armor sphere grind, cause as it is I leveled up my first HR set all the way, my support horn set all the way; and can barely level anything else. Haven’t started this grind yet but I’m curious if the event quest for an armor sphere, or grinding out Ark/Gore for monster parts to smelt into armor spheres will be more efficient.

Guard slash infinite loop is where it's at Y 4x, RT+B to guard slash at the end of the fourth Y and then right back into Y 4x, RT+B repeat until monster dead. If you do it right you never stop attacking. Reposition with slide (though you can stay mobile the entire time while attacking) or guard when necessary. I really only use charged chop when monster is down for the most part and I pop wounds regularly. If you have your corruption mantle it adds damage to combo and monster will likely be dead/close to dead by the time it wears off if you are sticking on them the whole time with the loop.

Been switching between SA, LS and GS for the most part but just recently picked up IG and realllly enjoying it. Man they really nailed so many of the weapons this iteration. Next up is Hammer. I wanted to try out some sort of poison build with the Gypceros tree, but it only goes to blue sharpness but we'll see if it works. Game is pretty easy so even if it sucks maybe I'll give myself a challenge.

When do you know a Monster can be trapped?

In Worlds I could always trap them when they went to their lair to sleep but now I seem to fail that in Wilds and they wake up and just keep going after the Shock Trap runs out.

Skull icon on the minimap. I'm pretty sure I've seen a few go to sleep even when the monster was not at all close to death. If the skull icon is there, a trap followed by 2-3 tranq bombs should work just like in previous games.

Only other thing I can think of is that a lot of story missions require you to kill.

Ah cool, will keep an eye out for the skull icon. Its mainly for some sidequests that require trapping them.

If your quest has the word "Slay" in its title, you have to kill the monster. If it has "Hunt" you can kill or capture, and if it has "Capture" you have to capture it.

Also, doesn't the Palico make a certain line now like "Looks like he is almost done for!" or something?

Yes, I've also heard the Palicon comment when the monster is exhausted/hungry(?), where it shows the salivating head icon on the mini map vs. the skull.

Just about done here, great game but disappointed overall in the quantity of content. Got pretty much every weapon to tier 8, had a really good time with swag axe, sns, hbg & IG. Looking forward to more content, but nothing to really grind out now (though dropping into newb hunts is still fun every now and again).

Yeah, that's where I'm at also. Not sure if it is because I know MH now, unlike when World came out or what...but this seemed real short and hella easy.
