My Monster Hunter experience:
-Heard tons of good things about MH Tri Ultimate for the Wii U back in like 2014. Was looking for something new to get into so I took a swing at it. Couldn't get into it, was constantly lost and the lack of lock-on sucked. Gave up, and this was during an era where I basically never gave up on any good games, I'd finish everything. The good news is I ended up playing Bloodborne and Dark Souls II instead and got hugely into Fromsoft.
-Got MH World for free circa 2017 or so and actually liked the look of that one, seemed to fix a lot of stuff. Put it down cause I didn't want to play the series too out of order.
-Took another swing at the series on Switch and 3DS with MH Generations and MH4 respectively, around 2020 when I bought a bunch of things I'd been interested in to play with my higher-than-normal free time that year. Tried my best to get into both. MH4's visuals were too rough for me to get into it, and MH Generations, while decent, just felt kind of pointless when there were newer ones out.
-Tried MH Rise in 2021, thought it was too anime (if I'm thinking of the right game) and too "Switch-y". Nothing felt impactful and it looked about ten years out of date. Ended up just going "fuck it" and deciding I'd play World at some point and leave it at that.
-Loaded MH World back up in 2025, played the first few hunts, find it to be lots of fun. Not sure why it is, but MH World is the only one of these that I can get into AT ALL. Iceborne looks pretty cool too. I guess I'll give this a full-on go in the near future. At this point World has so much content built onto it that it's a pretty huge game, and IMO it looks better than the ones newer than it look. Playing World on the PS5 with full Resolution mode, the framerate doesn't even drop at all compared to full Framerate mode, and it looks amazing. At least one of the MH games clicked for me at all, but either way I'll prolly stick with World.
I'm a huge fan of the hunts in Final Fantasy 12/13, and a game built around that sort of thing, with Souls-like gameplay, should be a dream series for me. Maybe after World I'll be so fired-up for MH that I'll be able to play the other ones.
