You won't be able to straight up replace the Defender weapons though, all the new weapons you'll want to use by the time Defender becomes bad, will require you to have their previous versions unlocked. Some will allow you to skip to the new tier, but some won't. Pick out some weapons tree's you liked, and get to unlocking them fully. For example, I'll be using the Light Bow Gun, and the first weapon (Beotodus LBG) I could upgrade too will require the Jyuratodus to be unlocked, which also contains the main LBG I'll be using for most of Iceborne (Nargacuga). So having those weapons built and rdy to be upgraded is a relief.

Good tip, I need to research which dbs/ls's are in the iceborne meta I guess and knock that out tonight. That all items in the shop mod is a lifesaver, but costs a boatload of $$ for some of the mats

I think the Rathian tree is highly regarded, maybe Nergi.

DBs and Bows are all about elements in Iceborne so you'll need one for each element to be the most effective.

I mean you can also edit your gold using the save editor so you can fix that if needed, I posted a link to it a couple pages back in the spoiler that has a bunch of mods and what not.

For meta stuff, this is the reddit thread that has all the meta sets:

You then cross compare with the weapon tree stuff, I find the wiki one is fairly decent, click on Weapon Tree on the weapons you want to check and not the actual weapon thing and it'll display them similar to ingame, although the tree has a few mistakes here and there Weapons - Monster Hunter World

Then you just craft the shit that's leading up to the meta.

With that said, it might not be realistic to craft all the elemental versions right away unless you want to spend a lot of time farming mats, so you can probably go for a generic non elemental weapon to clear the story with, preferably something easy to craft early on like raw metal, jagras or something like that. Don't really know about every weapon types so that might vary though.

So can anyone explain this game to me for someone that never touched a monster hunter game before? If this is coming to PC I might have a look at it.
This video sums up the highs & lows, and what you will probably experience. =)

Think this is starting to click a bit, using the insect glaive, my first MH game, just got past Zorah tonight, which was a fun set piece. Are there a handful of other events like that?

It helped a LOT finally realizing I didn't have the defender glaive equipped, misunderstood the tree at first and crafted an iron one I think, had been using that for my first several hunts.

I'm still trying to get a good feel for the move sets, kinda get into animation hell every so often 2 feet too far away, or facing the wrong direction.

The story has a few "siege" encounters yeah, the expansion also has them. They're nice to do once but they're fairly horrible to farm which made Zorah one of the worst monsters in the end. There's also the larger multiplayer encounters in endgame that have a bunch of phases and mechanics, in the original it was Kulve Taroth and in Iceborne is Safijiva, they use a multi group meta progression system(each groups contributes to a bigger goal and when the bigger goal is reached every group is rewarded with stuff), these are pretty fun overall although I wasn't a fan of KT after a while due to the ultra RNG nature of rewards.

Insect Glaive is a pretty nice weapon, it's just kinda annoying to have to collect essences. Which btw if you're new, you're doing right?

You use the left trigger+button(I think haven't played IG in a while) to shoot the insect at a monster part and it gets a colored extract then you recall it with trigger+other button to get the extract.

Generally head/front legs would get you red which gives more damage and an improved moveset(a must have since you get additional strong moves on basically everything), hitting the wings or sometimes legs will give white which gives improved movement speed and hitting chest/sometimes back legs will give orange, which gives increases defenses and reduced staggers from some stuff and when they're combined they give more powerful effects. White+red is generally the basic one you need to do hunts properly but adding orange for all 3 gives you minor earplugs and more damage and defense increase which is great, although it can't be refreshed until it drops.

Also if you got confused by the crafting stuff, maybe you didn't notice you can also upgrade your Kinsects, and you definitely should. Focus on the ones that have max speed, as speed is the one important stat to make sure they reliably hit the parts you want extracts from.

Leveling The guiding land is getting pretty annoying. I have grinded that shit for hours and I'm still not level 6 in more than two regions at a time.

Which leaves me being extremely light on augments despite all the grinding. I am also getting kind of tired at looking at jiiva weapons even if they are currently the best.

Time change it up.

I do have a ton of lures though

Kushala down. I then used flares for the first time on Toestra and VH which maybe that was a mistake as the people that joined were way above my level and made those fights a joke but I kind of want to get through the story after spending so much time on Kushala.

Ended the night on the giant blue dr. Manhattan dragon, got trucked once and was tired so will come back to that today.

Fuck it, downloading this now. Who knows, maybe it will end up like Persona 5 or Fallout 3 as games I didn't play at first because there were things about them I thought I wouldn't like and it ended up being a mistake. They both ended up being two of my favorite games, time to give this a game a chance.

It's a cross between Dark Souls, Everquest (Loot satisfaction) and quality builds. The game is VERY complex. I have 100 hours in and still do not understand all the systems. But well worth the price of admission. Make sure to do the side quests that unlock very important quality of life items/things. The reward structure regardless is very satisfying. If anything gets too hard, make sure to level your gear.

That's the last monster in the base story so once you're done you should be ready for the expansion(more or less there's a bunch of stuff to unlock but you can unlock them later.

You mean Lunastra or Jiva?

Teostra and Lunastra are probably my absolute favorites to fight.

Tell us how satisfying it was when you finally killed Kushala. You know you want to.

I was happy but also super annoyed that I wasted so much time trying to kill him with an HBG. Just as your noting it gets tiring looking at the same weapon and armor. I killed him but there is no real reward yet.

Yup, doing all that. With the defender armor at the moment all I can even really upgrade are my kinsects.

Well it doesn't help that I think the Safi-Jiva weapons are just hideous outright. I hate how they look. The Safi'Jiva update did fix a bunch of weapons with the bone type look like the Glavenus Greatsword. Which looks badass now.

The Safi Jiva weird Organic/Zerg type look just does nothing for me. I'll be running a not as optimal build just for smth different. Loyal Thunder HBG looks 10x better anyway.

There's a weapon transmog tool on Nexus so you could use the optimal weapons with whatever look you want. It's hidden at the moment for Iceborne release, but I assume it will be back soon.

I'm still a bit on the fence too, but knowing that there's mods to shortcut some of the stuff that ended up making me quit playing the game on PS4 definitely has me leaning towards making the switch now that I have a PC that should be able to run it at well over 60fps and I've read that Capcom put in proper ultrawide support after much complaining from the playerbase.

I was a bit concerned about Iceborne in general since I play entirely solo (aside from the shitty siege fights) but sounds like it's still as viable as before.

I play solo vast majority of the time now. I'll do SOS and stuff when I am running low on tempered investigations or when I need to find some people doing Guiding Lands with high level regions... which is a lot of the time now because that's what I really need to flesh out my builds.

I kind of hate that the guiding lands can DE-LEVEL and I don't really know how that happens. I know monsters haver area types and whatnot but I got Volcanic level 6 without ever touching the volcanic area. I need to start burning lures... but I haven't got any tempered lures from anything yet. You can chain hunt for a long time in Guiding Lands and not consistently level up shit.
