Well, they want to make Modern a more accessible format for the average player. I think they don't want any cards to be higher then $40-50 in Modern, just like nothing gets higher then $25ish in standard (with a few exceptions in both cases being acceptable). If they have a limited print run product, every year, it won't drive prices into the ground.. but it will bring them down to a reasonable level and also create more modern players in general. If successful, this could also mean many standard card's prices won't drop like a rock upon rotation, if they are played in modern.

I like the idea they have going for all of this, just hope they execute properly.

If they make modern that accessible it will compete with Standard in a way that's not good for anyone.

I just think they're printing too many cards per year.

Too many magic cards, or too many modern cards? Because they are printing the same number of magic cards they've printed for some time with this announcement. We had a hole in products with their recent changes, that this is filling.

I do think bi-annually may be better then annually, unless they make the set a bit smaller (150-200 cardS). But, at $10 a pack with limited print runs, it's still vastly more scarce then any given standard set will be. It won't plummet the price of cards, unless they lower a card's rarity in the re-printing (like rare to uncommon, or mythic to rare).

They didn't, but with 15 mythic slots to fill a reprint set is likely to swap things up. Not every mythic can be a clique, Bob or goyf or packs will just be cracked for singles by shops. Plus these products are designed for limited play. You're going to have kamigawa dragon type mythics in there too.

I think Opal is obvious. Emrakul we know. Linvala seems very likely as well. Maybe we get goyfs or bobs again, but there are other key cards for modern equally in need of further reprinting.

Yeah, bringing the price of modern down is a good thing imo. The fact that the cheapest decks for that format are around $400 is kind of nuts IMO. Prices need to come down quite a lot.

I kinda disagree. Just having fetches back at more reasonable levels makes modern considerably more accessible. There are what, 6 cards over $50 that even matter? Opal, Noble, Cryptic, Goyf, Bob and Clique? Linvala hovers around that line, but she's right on the edge. I have a hard time seeing that as too problematic.

I'm happy about MM2 because it'll keep the game growing, which is good for everyone. Old set cards tend to keep their value for collectors to a greater degree than I think people expected. Hell, just this week I dumped several Onslaught fetches for $30-45 each when people can get the same damn cards for a third of that. Are they worth what they were pre-Khans? Nope, but they still carry a premium. You just have to work a little harder to connect the right source with the right buyer.

FWIW, this is why I bought FS Goyfs instead of MM ones. I fuckin hate the art on original Goyf. It's ugly as sin, but they're a unique border and have a certain cache with the right kind of trader. As of now, MM ones are a tiny bit higher, but that generally hasn't been so and certainly won't continue if MM2 includes Goyf as a mythic again.

Well damn.. my friend that was gonna come up a day later and at least hang out/play side events this weekend in Seattle just cancelled. So, now I've got a hotel room to myself and no one to test with.
Is there anyone in, or will be in, the Seattle area that wants to do some legacy or standard play testing tomorrow night before the invitational?

Welp.. at least I came to the same conclusions as Tom Ross about the meta at the invitational. So, that's reassuring.

If anyone is gonna watch the coverage, I'll prolly be the only Nolan there, if you see me at a featured table somehow! Will be on UW heroic for standard, and a U/R/b burn heavy delver deck for legacy (splash cabal therapies out of sideboard)

Delver decks are getting soooooo greedy with their mana these days. URb Delver plays what, 5 real mana sources and a shitload of fetches? I really want to just show up with old school RUG packing 4x Stifle, 4 Wasteland and Surgical Extraction out of the side. Have fun playing magic when I exile all your Volcanic Islands.

This would be fun for me to watch; as my least favorite decks to watch win are Delver decks.

How dare you sir! I have SEVEN actual mana sources, thank you very much.

:p

I didn't even pay attention to Legacy until I knew I was going to this. I tried a few decks a little bit, but I wanted something relatively easy, proactive and fast (so I can scout and socialize). I think Burn is too linear, then a friend had this list that looked nice. I saw David Stroud got 2nd at SCGPORT with almost the exact same list as my friend'sU/R Delver, by David Stroud - A Magic: the Gathering Deckso I'm happy with it. I'm playing a basic island and mountain over 2 of the fetches, though. A 3rd chain lightning over a forked bolt main, and a few different cards in SB. Friend's list just had 4 chain lightnings main, no forked bolt. I feel like the smart people will show up with wastelands and/or blood moons, so I wanted some outs. My goal is just to have over a 50% record in legacy and hope my Standard record is carrying me. I feel good about my deck choice and knowledge for Standard.

As a die hard Maverick player, I was really happy to see McDarby take down Portland. His list differs significantly from mine (or any established Maverick list, really), but it was still a joy to watch.
