The new 'Pinocchio' trailer is finally out with Tom Hanks playing the role of Geppetto, the puppet maker who wishes upon a star to give life to his greatest creation. All that is well, we see a faithful Pinocchio representation on the big screen. Even Jiminy Crickett is looking sharp in the film, but outraged "fans" already found a new thing to complain about.Twitter trolls are outraged over the new Fairy God Mother's look on 'Pinocchio'

They apparently really don't like that Disney decided to make the Blue Fairy African American. Actress Cynthia Erivo takes on the role for this film that will premiere on Disney Plus Day's September 8. In the animated film, she is blonde and the studio decided to give more representation to a different race. This is done by studios around the world for better PR, but casual movie goers don't seem to like it.
Is this reaction considered racist?
Although many of the outraged fans want to hold on to the idea that keeping everything just like the original film, some of their arguments can definitely be considered racist. A user even shot the question that since the film is set in Italy, there are no black Blue Fairies in that country.
As if this even mattered in a fantasy film, some of these takes are pretty terrible and tone deaf from these so-called "movie fans". In other cases, they are making the term 'forced inclusion' a thing. They lack some histtorical context that we will gladly remind them of, just in case they either don't recall any of these events from that era or they just don't care.
For starters, the 'Pinocchio' movie is one of Walt Disney's classics that was initially premiered in 1940. That was a time in which racial tensions were incredibly high in the United States. Hollywood didn't really offer any parts to African Americans in live actions films, let alone animation.
Making the decision to choose a different ethnicity for a character these days goes hand in hand with this disenfranchisement of the black community. Other communities have also suffered this discrimination in the past and things have changed. All of these complaints about actors with other ethnicities lack the historical context and need to be ignored.
its the same Disney playbook, they cant just insert a beautiful woman thats possibly non white, they have to put in the most bizarre looking, crunk faced horribly miscast black woman that they could find, put her in the foreground and wait for the backlash so they could call you a racist. they are doing this same thing in the Kenobi thread. calling anyone who doesnt like that horrible show a racist. reminds me so much of those old PSA ads where the prom queen isnt a beautiful girl, but the short mongoloid ugly downs kid. she scrambles out stunned while the pretty girls are all laughing and smiling like they just did the coolest good deed ever.Sadly Disney are lazy as fuck and gutless.
Black actors need jobs just like anyone else but shoehorning a black actress in to a minor role just because diversity is lazy and ultimately does a white female actress out of a job and generates a backlash from not only racists but people who legitimately care about the subject matter. Which is presumably less problematic than replacing Geppetto with something other than an old, white guy.
Ultimately, there need to be decent scripts for black, female, and trans actors so the lazy option of reusing classics as an easy way to bring in the bucks while meeting bullshit arbitrary diversity quotas dies a long overdue death.
